“Your life is about to change for good. It’s happening today, watch out!” I laughed as I read the words on the note from the fortune cookie… It was six months since I walked away from my wedding and landed in a new city. I had nothing but my luggage and a broken heart. I got a small apartment and started looking for a job but it was so hard. I couldn’t even use my real name or my work experience as a popular model. The Hartwood family had made sure that my former name was messed up with scandal. Lisa… that was the name I started using and after four months of rejection, I finally got a job at a diner. The pay could barely cover my rent so I had to work double shifts just to meet up. Then that fateful morning, I took one of the fortune cookies and seeing the note, I burst into laughter. My life was a huge mess, only a miracle could suddenly change it for good in a day. I hadn’t dropped the note when the door opened, and a man walked in. He sat at the corner booth, he wasn't like our usual customers. He wore a clean, charcoal suit and carried an aura of power and authority. I served him and when he was done, he paid and even left me a huge tip. But that wasn’t all, he slid a business card across the table, making me confused. "You’re just wasting away here, my company has a vacancy in the administrative department. It’s an entry-level desk job but it pays ten times whatever you’re making here. If you want it, show up on Monday and ask for the HR director." He simply said and left. Throughout the weekend, I kept contemplating within myself but by Monday, I dressed up and went to the company. I never got to see the man but once I showed the card at the front desk, I was immediately scheduled for an interview, which only lasted ten minutes. I got the job and that turned out to be the happiest day of my life in the last six months. Turns out the fortune cookie was true after all… For the next year, I worked like never before. I moved from admin to junior analyst, and then one day, the company suddenly announced a funding mainly for employees to pitch business ideas for internal financing. I immediately got to work, drafting a plan for a marketing firm that specialized in reputation reconstruction. I knew that world better than anyone. I knew how to bury a scandal, and I knew how to build a queen from the ashes. I pitched my idea and got the fund but that wasn’t all, a silent primary investor from a parent corporation had seen my proposal and invested massively. That literally changed my life for good. I suddenly went from an employee to a CEO. Within two years, I had offices in three cities, and everything was going smoothly. All this while, I never knew the identity of that silent investor but I never stopped digging until I finally got a meeting set up. It was set for the afternoon in the penthouse suite of the city’s most prestigious hotel, and I made sure everything was perfect, especially myself. I checked my reflection in the elevator mirror a dozen times. My hair was neatly curled, my makeup was simple and classy, and my suit was well fitted. I knew I looked damn perfect but I still walked into the suite with so much nervousness. The investor was already there, he was standing by the window with his back to me. "Good afternoon sir, I wanted to thank you personally. Your investment didn't just build a company, it literally saved a life." I let out and it took a second before he finally turned. My heart skipped a beat when we locked eyes and I realized who it was. "Marcus?" I whispered, unable to believe Hannah’s ex-husband was my silent investor all this while, and he was now standing in front of me. "Hello, Jenny, surprised to see me?” He finally said but I was too stunned to even say a word. "You look... different. You’re more beautiful and… powerful." He added. “Really? It was you all this while?” I let out slowly and he smiled. “Not just that, Jenny. It has been me from the very start.” He replied and the pieces started clicking together. "Oh my goodness… The customer at the diner… the job vacancy… the funding… investment. You were the one pulling the strings the whole time!" I recounted while he walked toward me, stopping just a few feet away. "I resented you at first, Jenny. I thought you intentionally destroyed my marriage, I wanted to find you and make you pay for the humiliation. I spent months digging into your life, looking for dirt to use against you." He paused to look at me and then continued. "But the more I dug, the more I found the truth. I found the medical records for your sister, the logs from the club you worked as a stripper, and that the daughter I called mine was never mine. I realized you weren't the villain, Jenny. You were the victim and you didn't deserve the cruelty they gave you." He finally stopped and I sighed. "So you helped me? Why anonymously though? Why wait three years to show your face?" I asked, my eyes now filled with tears. "I wanted to know for sure that you had what it takes to bring Nate and Hannah down. And you needed to do it all alone without me standing beside you." He replied and I chuckled. “So is this where you ask for your money back?" I asked while he stepped closer. "Nate and Hannah think we’re both buried in the past and they’ve won. Now is the time to take everything they hold dear to their hearts from then, Jenny. I want them to realize that the two people they stepped on are now the ones holding the leash." He said firmly while I looked at him. I saw the same fire in his eyes that had burned in mine three years ago. "You want revenge," I stated. "I want partnership," he retorted as he reached into his coat jacket and pulled out a small box. He then went on a knee, opened the box and I saw the diamond ring. "Marry me, Jenny… let’s get them together!” He said.Jenny “Your life is about to change for good. Jenny I stayed in the closet for what felt like an eternity. I couldn’t bring myself to watch them so I just shut my eyes tightly but since I couldn’t also shut my ears, I was forced to listen to the sickening sounds of the two people I had loved most in the world. Every moan from Hannah and every groan from Nate ripped through my head. The fact that the ex I thought I saw at my own birthday party was actually my fiancé and that they both have a child together made me want to scream until my lungs give out, but I didn't. I just bit my tongue until it hurt really bad... They finally stopped after the second round, and Nate went to drop her off. I let out a loud sigh as I crawled out of the closet. My legs were cramped, and my body felt so heavy. I sat at the dresser, and staring at the envelope with my pictures, I made up my mind to get Nate back. Of course, I didn't want him back because I loved him. That’s already in the past. I just want him back long enough for me to get re
JennyA satisfied grin crept onto my face, knowing the havoc that simple text message was going to do to Hannah’s marriage…Two years ago, at my birthday party, I saw Hannah slipping into the guest bedroom with a man who wasn't Marcus. I knew it was her ex boyfriend because she had invited him despite my reservations. I had nothing in mind when I took those pictures of the two kissing passionately. I was only going to use the pictures to taunt her later so I didn’t disturb them and quietly walked away. I never showed her the pictures or taunted her either. I totally forgot about it until months later, when she announced her pregnancy, she cried to me about how Marcus was going to be the best father in the world but I knew he wasn’t the father. I didn’t say anything though. I kept that secret like it was my own. I thought I was being a sister and protecting her family. But if she could tear down my future over envy, then I would tear down hers without remorse.Once that was done, the
JennyMy wedding dress arrived the same morning my fiancé told me he could never marry me…I stared at my dress which sat on a mannequin, admiring the ivory silk and hand-stitched pearls that caught the morning light. I had spent two months designing it and Nate had spent a fortune to ensure it was the only one of its kind in the world.A big smile lined my cheeks as I ran my fingers through the dress with joy radiating through my heart. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted this but I never thought it would happen. I never thought I would find my Prince Charming and enjoy my happy ending with him."Oh my goodness, it’s perfect, Jen," Hannah exclaimed from the doorway. I turned around and saw her beaming with smiles as she hurried towards me. She was dressed in a sleek designer suit, looking every bit the high-society wife she had become. "You’re going to be the most beautiful bride the city has ever seen. Nate won’t be able to breathe." She exclaimed, scanning the dress with
