Eleven hours.

I said the number out loud once, in Milo's office, and then I didn't say it again, because saying it made the clock feel louder than it already was.

"Start with the documents," Milo said, already pulling folders across the table. "Every filing gets a copy tonight. Not a scan, not a backup on one drive. Three separate copies, three separate locations, so nothing Gideon does before nine o'clock can make a single piece of this disappear."

"I'll handle the financial records," Nathanie

"This letter," Gideon said, turning to face the board head on, "proves that Alden Delaney trusted me with more than his company. He trusted me with his daughter. More, perhaps, than he trusted her to protect herself."A few heads around the table nodded, slow and uncertain, the kind of agreement that comes from people who want a clean story more than they want a true one.I let the silence hold a beat before I spoke."I'd like to see the original."Gideon's smile faltered, a crack breaking across plaster."This is the original," he said."Then you won't mind if our own document examiner confirms that in front of the board.""That seems excessive for a letter from a grieving father to a man he trusted.""It seems necessary for a letter you've kept secret for eight years and only produced the morning you tried to remove me from this company." I kept my voice even, almost gentle, the way you'd speak to someone you were trying not to startle. "Show us the original, Gideon. If it's real, t

The boardroom smelled like coffee and cologne and something under both of those, something sharp and electric that I could only call fear, though I couldn't have said at first whose fear it was.Mine, maybe. I hadn't slept.Milo walked on my left, a leather case in his hand heavy enough to strain his shoulder. Nathaniel walked on my right, close but not touching, his eyes already moving across the room, counting faces, counting cameras, counting exits the way he'd taught himself to do in the five years since he'd learned what happened to people who didn't.The room was full. Shareholders filled every chair around the long table, and behind them, packed along the walls, stood lawyers, executives, and at least a dozen reporters with notebooks and recorders already out, their eyes tracking me the moment I walked through the door.Gideon stood at the head of the table. He looked magnificent. Pressed suit, easy smile, the posture of a man who had already rehearsed his victory in a mirror t

"Every filing gets a copy tonight. Not a scan, not a backup on one drive. Three separate copies, three separate locations, so nothing Gideon does before nine o'clock can make a single piece of this disappear.""I'll handle the financial records," Nathaniel said, pulling his laptop toward him. "Ridgeline, Meridian, the shell chain, all of it duplicated and time stamped tonight, with a notarized declaration attached before sunrise if I can find a notary willing to work at four in the morning.""I know one," Milo said. "She owes me a favor from a case in Reno. I'll call her."Naomi's voice came through the speaker on the table, steady despite the hour. "I still have the recordings. Every conversation since the folder. I'll send copies to your perso

"Why you married her."I said the words out loud in the car, four hours after we left Renner's house, my father's voice still echoing in my head like a bell no one could stop."He said it to Gideon," I said. "Not to Harold. Not to Renner. To Gideon, at the door. My father knew about the marriage before it happened, and he knew the reason."Nathaniel kept his eyes on the road, both hands steady on the wheel. "That means there may be proof of it. Your father wouldn't have said those words without proof behind them.""Then we find it."We didn't go home. We drove straight to Milo's office and spread the last of Nathaniel's old files across the conference table, every folder and drive and printed page we hadn't yet read line by line. Milo made coffee no one drank. Naomi joined by phone from her safe house, her voice tight with the same exhaustion I could see in everyone's faces. For two hours, we read in silence."Here," Nathaniel said at last.I looked up. He was staring at his laptop sc

"Play it," I said.Renner's thumb pressed down, and the old recorder gave a dry click before the speaker crackled to life.Static first. A low hiss, the rustle of fabric, muffled by the pocket it had been hidden in for eight years. Then a voice cut through, thin and hoarse, and every muscle in my body locked."You can threaten me all night, Harold. It changes none of this."My father.I had not heard his voice in eight years. I had watched old videos, replayed voicemails I could never bring myself to delete, but this was different. This was him, in that room, on the last night of his life, and he sounded tired and furious and every inch himself."Alden, be reasonable." Harold's voice, smooth and patient, the voice of a man used to talking others into corners. "Nobody in this room wants a scandal. There's a way to fix this without noise.""Fix it. You mean bury it." A cough rattled through the speaker. "I have every transfer, Harold. Every shell company, every falsified report. Two yea

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 27: THE MAN WHO VANISHED

"His name is Walter Briggs now," Milo said, sliding a printed address across the table toward me. "Charles Renner changed his identity through the courts four years ago, moved twice since, settled outside a small town where nobody asks questions about a quiet man who keeps to himself.""How did you find him?""Property tax records. He owns the house under Briggs, but the mortgage company still lists an old emergency contact from his life as Renner, a sister who never updated her paperwork. It took some digging, but few people manage to erase every trace of themselves. There's always a thread left somewhere."We drove out that same afternoon, the three of us, Milo behind the wheel, Nathaniel beside him, me in the back seat with my father's letter tucked into my bag like a talisman I couldn't leave behind. The house sat at the end of a gravel road, modest, well kept, the kind of place a man builds when he wants a life no one would ever think to look twice at.We parked a house down and
