CENTURIES AGO…

LADY BAEVERA

“Let us do it tonight,” Thorian, my boyfriend, whispered into my ear, grinding his erection against my lower belly as he pinned me to the wall. “My parents are on a journey, the maids are off tonight, so we will have the house to ourselves.”

Then he kissed me.

I moaned into his mouth, rocking my hips back in answer. “You know I want to, Thorian. But I do not think my father will let me out tonight.”

“Tell him you are going to the festival. Or better yet, just sneak out.” He caressed my back, sending goosebumps down my spine.

A loud clang cut us apart.

I whipped my head toward the sound and saw Evan, my clumsy stepbrother, trembling just beyond the doorway. A shattered flower vase lay at his feet. His eyes were red and wet, his cheeks blotchy and streaked with tears.

Annoyance sparked through me. “Get out of my room!”

“P-please, h-help me,” he stammered.

I pushed away from Thorian long enough to shoot the boy a murderous glare. “Do not make me come over the

After I gave him the same version I had told my aunt, Philip was deeply sympathetic. Like her, he raged at the idea that I had not brought the identities of my captors home so he could hunt them down himself. The Sunsprings were an old, powerful bloodline, so wealthy and well-connected. Though Philip’s older brother, Dominus, was the tireless overseer of their enterprises, Philip had always been…I would not say lazy. Relaxed, perhaps. A little spoiled. But he was kind, loyal, and deeply caring, and that was the side of him I had come to cherish.“Please stay,” he said later that evening, when I was preparing to leave. “I have missed you. Stay with me a little while longer, Bae.”I wanted to. I really did. But I hesitated.Philip did not know I only had less than a week before my return. There was still so much left to do.He stepped closer, wrapped his arms around my waist, and kissed my neck. “Please, stay with me. Let us take walks, converse for hours, and attend the Long Howl Festi

LADY BAEVERA.I entered the grand Sunspring Manor, walking through the long, familiar hallway that led to the master’s wing.As expected, Bone and Mitvian were at their posts. When they saw me, their eyes went comically wide as they straightened into full sentinel posture.“My lady!” Bone exclaimed.“You are back!” Mitvian echoed.“Well, hello to you too, boys.” I smiled at them warmly. “I hope your master is inside?”“Oh yes, my lady. He is in his chambers but,” Bone said, though his tone turned uneasy. A familiar kind of uneasy. “He is rather… occupied.”Huh. A tightness formed in my chest. One I tried to dismiss.“I am sure he will still want to receive me. I will go ahead.” I continued walking. When I heard hesitant footsteps behind me, I called over my shoulder, “There is no need to follow. Return to your duty posts.”“My lady?” Mitvian asked gently.I turned to him.“He was incredibly worried about you. We all were.” The face of the hardened killer softened, stretching into the

“Stop calling her that,” I snapped. “There is no relationship, absolutely no blood between Baevera Eldareth and I. Her father’s union with my mother was not even strong, they did it the human way.”“What the hell does that even mean?”“It means they made some idiotic vows before some sacred entity to be mated. There was no bonding ritual and no mating bond because with its high chance of failure, Magnus was not about to risk one.” I said, then snorted. No wonder he turned my mother into his personal punching bag. If there had been a mating bond between them, things would have been different. His instinct to love and protect her would have been overwhelming; hurting her would have felt like hurting himself. He would have died before laying a hand on her.“Oh, that makes sense,” Alaric nodded thoughtfully. “I know a few of our people who have entered that kind of union, the ones whose bonding rituals failed but still chose to remain together out of love. They last for years, even centur

LADY BAEVERAAunt Kiskera had always been far too skeptical for her own good, and now, even as we had drank the calming brew she had prepared, she was still watching me with suspicion in regards to the well-thought out lies I told her.“So let me get this straight,” she said, refilling my cup with steaming moonleaf. “While waiting for your bloodmaster at the Union Tree, you were attacked and kidnapped. But you managed to escape in the middle of the night a few days later. You did not come home because you feared they would be searching for you there, so instead, you have been circling the city while waiting on the arms you hired to eliminate them. Now the job is done and here you are.”I gave her a sheepish smile. “Forgive me, Great Aunt, I would have come back sooner. I saw the posters and the news pamphlets, but I did not want to put anyone in danger. These people were serious. I did not want them bringing their problems to our doorstep.”She sighed heavily, eyes tired. “Since when

I was submerged, drowning, already at death’s door. But Helory found me.“What are you doing!?” she had screamed at me. “Have you gone mad!? I have no idea what you are going through, but how dare you try to kill yourself!? You have no right! None!”She was crying, pounding her fists against my back even as she hugged me tight to her. “How could you do that when there are people out here who care about you and what happens to you!?”I was crying too, even as my whole body was numb from the cold, my teeth clattering so hard I thought they might fall off.“Leave me alone,” I had cried. "Let me die!"“Never!” she had shot back at me. “I care, Baevera. I fucking care. Do you hear me!?”That night, at the healer’s abode, I finally opened up and told her about my past. Not what had happened to me—no, that was not the tale for that day—but about Revandrel and his mother. Well, most of it.I had expected judgment and condemnation. I had expected her to look at me and say what I already know,

I averted my eyes. Helory always saw too much. It was her superpower, and my curse. “What you deserve is a second chance, Baevera Eldareth.” The fight drained from her voice, her fingers threading through my hair. “And I hope that one day, your stepbrother will see that too. I hope one day, you will learn to forgive yourself too.”My throat closed up. How could I ever? That was impossible.Still, I gave her a small, weak smile. “Thank you, Hills. But, let us not discuss it anymore. I have made the deal. Ten years is barely a drop in the passage of time. I can do this.” I sniffled. “I may not be free from him once I have paid this debt, but at least it would lessen some of the guilt I feel. The burden would lighten. That is more than enough for me.”She opened her mouth, but I pressed a finger to her lips.“Please?”She searched my eyes for a long moment. Then finally, she nodded. “Okay. Fine. I will stop talking about it now.”Wiping her tears, she gave me a watery smile.“Thank you.
