LADY BAEVERA.

Slowly I became aware of my environment and myself. Strangely, I felt at peace.

The kind that made me know I may have died and cross over to the otherside if not for the excruciating pain radiating from my body.

I may be due for another pain potion though, because this is hell on Earth, this pain felt like it was stitched into my skin. Where is the healer? Or had I truly died?

My eyes opened sluggishly, blinking against a ceiling and the soft stretch of early dawn filtering through the curtains. This is Naked Den.

An unfamiliar, luxurious chamber, but yes Naked Den.

My slightly blurry eyes shifted sideways landing on the male seated in a chair beside me. Revandrel…?

What in all the drowned realms was he doing here? Was I dreaming?

He was seated slouched in a chair, head tipped forward…wait, is he actually asleep?

In what unreal world am I in this time around? Had the healer slipped something stronger than herbs into my blood? Because the Revandrel I knew you would ne

“Oh, the gods, oh the gods, my gods!” a panicked shrill broke through the morning calm. The healer had sprung awake, looking around frantically. “I slept through the night? My patient!”She rushed to Baevera’s side, frantically checking her temperature, cool hands brushing her forehead, cheeks, and neck with urgency.“Take it easy, Healer,” Alaric said gently. “It is not good for your condition. No one blames you.”“Speak for yourself,” I bestowed onto the healer the gift of my angriest scowl. “It is admirable that you chose rest over your duties, leaving your patient and the rest of us to suffer through the night. Tell me, who among us enjoyed the well-needed rest you so generously took for yourself?”The healer’s eyes went wide. She jerked away from Baevera, then dropped to her knees before me. “I am so sorry, my Lord! Forgive me! I deserve to die!”I glanced at the duke, expecting one of his righteous protests, but for once, he stayed silent. Though his eyes pleaded with me to show

By the time I finished, her breathing was still uneven, but the panic was ebbing. She stilled.I straightened, brushing my hands together, and turned toward the door.“Evan…” she whispered behind me. “Evan, I am so sorry.”I stilled. My back went ramrod straight, fingers curling into fists at my sides.No. Just no.Slowly, I turned my head to look at her again. Her eyes were closed now, her face flushed and beaded with sweat. Her fever was back at its peak, and her skin looked hot enough to burn. But she was not awake.“I did not know… I did not…” Her voice cracked. “Evan, please.”I scowled. My heartbeat quickened with anger and old hurt. What is this? What game is she playing? And why would I be the one she calls in the pits of her high fever?“So young and foolish,” she cried. “If only time could go back. If only time could reset…”Enough of this. I whirled around to leave—A hand clamped around my wrist.I spun around so fast I might have noticed the world shift. Her small, sweaty

Pivoting, I returned to Baevera’s side, and crossed my arms.“Hey, stop that,” I ordered sternly. “You will have to endure this quietly. Your healer is newly pregnant and in no state to assist you. She needs every ounce of rest she can get, and even I am not monster enough to interrupt that sleep.”She did not hear me. Or maybe she did, but the voices in her head was louder. Her thrashing worsened. She kicked the covers away. A wrapped wound on her arm tore open, bleeding sluggishly through the soaked bandages. Her breathing came fast, too fast, like a cornered animal. “Stop! No, do not touch me…please…I am tired, it hurts… I am tired.” Where in the hell is she?I was not surprised her feverish hallucinations leaned more toward horror plays than sweet fantasies, but still, was it truly so vivid that she carried on as though she were living through it in real time?“Compose yourself, whatever is happening is not real,” I scolded, irritated. “Cease that unladylike display and comport

Standing at the edge of my sacred bed, I stared at the desecration that was Baevera. They had settled her for the night right here in my personal space before filing out, and all through such injustice, she barely stirred.“If looks could kill, yours would have finished her off before the fever could ever get a chance to try,” Alaric whispered beside me, still amused. The clobberhead.I shot him yet another glare. Would it really be so bad if I wrinkled the male’s neck?“Whatever you are thinking is a bad idea.” He only chuckled and patted my arm. “It is just for tonight. Loosen up a little, my friend.”There was no point dignifying that with a response. Turning, I left them and entered the adjoining chamber where warm water waited. The servants bowed and slipped out quickly, sensing my mood. I undressed and sank into the bath.Closing my eyes, I let the heat soak through my muscles as I tried to meditate. Focus. Breathe. It helped me calm. And think.I needed to reset. On the bright

“And they used ironshards,” Alaric added grimly. “Those are outlawed for a reason. Not only is it illegal, but it is also rare. If someone went to the extent of acquiring a substance that weaken and gravely harm our kind, then this was not some random attack. This was planned.”“They hired muscle for it. Three males to one female.” I shook my head. The audacity of them.Alaric nodded. “Someone with enough influence to source forbidden tools and enough hatred to use them without fear. We need her awake. Her account may lead us to whoever did this.”The healer moved to her, and seated herself on the edge of the bed, soaking a cloth in warm water. “She is burning up again,” she brushed the wet cloth over Baevera’s brow. “The fever is climbing. We must keep it from spiking too high.”“She will be guarded through the night,” I said. “Sentinels at her door. No one gets in unless cleared by me. And you,” I nodded to the healer, “you are staying with her. You will tend to her fever, monitor h
