With nothing else to uncover in Nerissa’s bedroom, I searched the rest of the house. My parents’ room was the only one untouched, the bed still made, the walls bare, the space free of the suffocating obsession I had just witnessed upstairs. It looked almost normal, which in itself was strange, like a stage set where someone had cleaned up for show.

But I know the truth. This just meant that no one had slept in the room in weeks.

I ended up in the living room, sinking into the couch to wait. The house was heavy with silence, broken only by the occasional creak of wood as the sun slipped lower in the sky. When the door finally opened around five, my mother stumbled in, dragging my father by the arm.

He was drunk. The stench hit before I even saw his face. She dropped him by the center table like a sack of flour, disgust clear in the stiffness of her movements, then stormed into the kitchen with the meager bag of groceries she’d managed to bring back.

I looked at him with nothing but an

  • Once His Mate, Now His Regret   Chapter 258: Aurielle DuVall

I went towards the basement, knocking on it gently. I wanted to talk to her about something. “Safe word?” Eliana's voice came through minutes later. “We don't have one.” The locks came off one at a time, and I fought back a laugh. Eliana poked her head out, shooting looks everywhere like she was trying to see if someone else was with me. “That guy isn't here right?”Oh, I forgot she told us she ran into a random man early this morning. Around like 3 AM. I had to explain who he was to her. “You mean Matthias?”“Yeah, your ex-husband.”“I don't see him. Last I checked, he was in the kitchen.”Her expression was nervous for a while before it changed. The muscles on her face that had been tightly wound loosened, and she exhaled. “Come down if you want to talk.”I nod, and she steps a bit to the side. Giving way for me to walk past her. I jogged down the stairs, holding the pieces of paper tightly. Cassiel had left the house early while everyone else was asleep to grab Creighton's re

As strange as it may seem, I slept pretty well. I thought I'd have a problem after initially being unable to rest, but the moment I could I was out cold. I needed this. After the hell I've faced, I needed to sleep and forget the problems of my life. I woke up to Cassiel watching me. His expression was stone cold, hands buried in the pockets of his pants. I raised my eyebrow in shock. Is this how he treats all his guests, or just me? I had a feeling this was a ‘me’ specialty. “You saw my sister.” He said plainly. It took a while for my sleep-fogged brain to assess what he had just said. When I finally did, I realized the true reason he was in my room.“Yes, I did. I saw her by accident.” I yawned. It doesn't take a smart person to know where Cassiel is going with this. The silence is a clear threat if I've ever heard one. I wasn't supposed to see her. He probably knows I saw her because she told him. That's just my guess. “I don't need to tell you this information stays here, right

I watched them, quailing my rage and jealousy. Aurielle looked like someone had stabbed her, though. I haven’t seen her in a while, so I had no idea just how bad it was. Her accident left her with a lot of injuries. Seeing all the patches and bandages on the exposed parts of her skin was heartbreaking because Aurielle didn’t deserve any of this. That wasn’t the reason she looked hurt, though. It was the thought of Cassiel dying. She was clutching his hand tightly— almost too tightly, but he didn’t seem to mind. The fondness in his eyes as he looked at her made me tense. Though they included me in making sure the trap worked perfectly, I remembered what Cassiel had asked of me when we last spoke. The look he had given me had been serious and ensured I promised to fulfill this favor. If the trap failed, Cassiel would pull a move his family only saved for extreme emergencies to take out the rogue— Creighton, that’s the name. But he knows it’s dangerous and it would likely result in hi

I woke up to the sound of movement, and quiet chatter. The house wasn’t that filled out yet, so words echoed around if two rooms were close to each other. I got up and glanced around, rubbing my eyes. I knee bumped into the coffee table, and I grunted from the slight stab of pain. The chatter died down instantly. Footsteps rushed towards me, and soon I was in Cassiel's arms as he scanned his heated gaze over my whole body, searching for what had caused me to make that sound. He patted me in spots like my elbow, wrist, and shoulder, trying to see if I’d wince at any of them.I was about to say something when my eyes locked onto Matthias staring from behind Cassiel. His form was stiff, and he quickly darted his gaze to the side. Like the floor and couch were suddenly the most interesting things he’d ever seen. I formed a blank expression for him, not sure why he was here. I'm pretty sure I slept for less than an hour. Maybe two at most. How did he get here so fast?I shook my head and

I sent Auburn with another mercenary to get me a list of ingredients to make chicken stir-fry. I forgot to buy food when I was ordering furniture. I’m not really worried about it. That’s the beauty of having people to do the easy work for you. I stepped back into the living room after they left. Aurielle was slowly falling asleep while thinking. She hadn’t noticed me, which was good. I just wanted to see her. I wonder what exactly Matthias said to her that had her tense. Was it really just a confession of his feelings?Do I need to worry? Does she still have some lingering feelings towards him?I rubbed the ache forming in my chest. I told myself it was ridiculous to worry. Aurielle was just worried I’d snap Matthias’s neck. I mean, I kept myself decent when she was married to him, so I expect him to... well, not act like I did, but also he’s not allowed to share his feelings with her. He needs to move on, I thought we had an understanding. He should let go of the feelings he has fo

I’ve been staring at my cell phone for the past five minutes because I couldn’t believe the conversation I’d had with Matthias. He was in love with me? He wants a chance? What the fuck? What the actual fuck is wrong with him?Why would he say such a thing? Not that it changes anything for me. It just messes with my head. I never expected a confession from him, and he sounded distraught by my rejection. I was running on anger at the time, and now I wonder if I was too harsh. Or if I wasn’t harsh enough. I don’t know how I feel about this.I wanted to shout, wanted to call Matthias back and yell at him some more. God, I hate him. I’m pretty sure I have never hated someone as much as I hate Matthias Crowe. I hate him for pissing me off when I didn’t need to feel that way. I told myself to breathe. Because hating Matthias is a waste of my time. If I feel nothing, then I wouldn’t need to be upset. The door to the back yard opened, and Cassiel walked out. He tensed immediately, and I didn
