Chapter 1
Alice
“Marry Thomas Brooks… and every cent of your brother’s hospital bills will be sorted.”
The words slammed into me like ice water.
Marry Thomas Brooks? The cold-hearted billionaire with a reputation so dark everyone feared him?
My knees buckled as I heard the faint beep of the machine in Brandy's ward.
Aunt Sam stood across from me, her arms crossed, her red lips curled like this was nothing more than a business deal.
Before I could process the words, her cold voice echoed through the hallway once again.
“So, what’s your decision, Alice? Are you willing to do it… or would you rather watch your brother die that way?” Her words hit me like thunder, leaving me no space to think.
I dropped hard to the cold floor, my fingers clawing at her feet. “Please aunty, anything but this. He’s old, he's ruthless. I can't…”
She kicked my hands away before I could finish. “Then be ready to kiss Brandy goodbye.” She said and turned to the door, her heels clicking on the marble floor like gunshots.
“Wait!” My voice cracked, hot tears streaming down my cheeks. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think properly either. All I could see was Brandy's pale face, tubes down his throat like a cold threat.
He was dying, and I had to save him. This was the only chance I had.
“I'll do it.” I whispered, my voice cracking through the quiet weight of my muffled sobs. “I'll marry him.”
Aunt Sam turned back, her eyes lit with excitement. “Good girl.” She grabbed my wrist and pulled me up to my feet. “The wedding is tomorrow. Let's go get you pretty for your new owner.”
3 years later…
Three years have passed, and my life in Thomas’s house has been nothing but pure misery.
Brandy had gotten into college after his surgery, and since then, I’ve been trapped, living with the monster I called a husband.
I was even pregnant… carrying the child of the man who treated me like nothing but trash.
‘I’ll change him,’ So I thought… until everything changed that night.
It was 7 pm. I was making dinner when a sudden pain sliced across my lower back and wrapped around my stomach like fire.
I dropped to the floor, clutching my stomach tight as I yelled Thomas's name desperately.
But he remained silent through it all.
Another contraction hit. Water gushed down my legs, spreading across the floor. I screamed his name again, dropping to my knees in the puddle.
He clearly heard me but chose to ignore me, lounging in the living room like I was invisible.
When he finally came in, his glare was furious, but not out of concern.
He lifted the pot lid without a word, disappointment written all over his face.
“How can you be so useless, Alice? You’ve been cooking for over an hour yet you haven’t even gone halfway!” He spat, his cold voice slamming through the kitchen like a heavy blow.
I grasped my pounding stomach, trying so hard to steady my breath. “Thomas, please…” I panted, gripping the edge of the counter. “...the baby’s coming. I can’t feel my legs.”
He crouched in front of me, but there was no worry in his eyes, only disgust. “And why should that bother me?” His voice thundered, laced with venom. “You’re always making a fuss, and I’m done with your drama. Get up and get back to work. Now.”
“I’m in labor!” I grabbed his ankle. “Please, you need to help me.”
He kicked my hands off furiously, then he leaned closer towards me, his voice dropping into a cold whisper.
“Listen carefully,” he hissed, his breath hot against my face. “You are worthless, and so is that thing growing inside you. Mention this pregnancy one more time and I will end you both myself.”
His words hit me like a punch. He stormed out before I could even catch my breath.
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I screamed even louder.
Minutes later, Maria, the youngest maid, burst in, her eyes wide with terror.
“Mrs. Brooks!” She dropped beside me, slipping an arm under my shoulders. “We need to get you to the hospital right away.”
She half-carried me through the house, until we reached the gate. As soon as we got to the gate, she flagged down a taxi and shoved me in the back seat. She hopped into the front seat quickly, yelling at the driver to move.
The pain cut even deeper this time, and I faintly heard her voice trying to soothe me, urging me to stay calm.
Then everything went dark.
~
I woke up to the steady beep of machines and the sting of bright white lights flashing into my eyes.
My body felt empty, like all life had been drained from it.
A doctor stood at the foot of the bed. He looked like he was in his mid-forties, with sharp cheekbones which made him appear tough. His eyes were the exact color of Thomas’s.
My stomach dropped before he even said a word.
“You’re stable, Mrs. Brooks,” he said gently, his voice as calm as a lake. “But there were severe complications.”
I tried to sit up as panic coursed through my veins. “My baby?”
He hesitated for a moment, his quiet eyes freezing me in place.
That silence explained everything.
“We did everything we could,” he said at last. “I’m sorry. The placenta tore away completely. We couldn’t stop the bleeding in time.”
The room spun around me, and I struggled to catch my breath.
He placed a folder on the tray table, stepping closer towards my bed.
“There's something else you should know, Mrs Brooks.”
Chapter 19George The moment Alice hit the ground, Thomas’s men lunged for the kid. But there was no way I was letting that happen… not on my watch. With a single sharp signal, my guards surged forward, caught them off guard, and snatched the child back in one clean move. When the dust had finally settled, Thomas’s men were sprawled across the floor, bleeding out and barely moving. Thomas just stood there, staring at the scene in stunned silence until his eyes finally locked onto mine.“You just declared war on yourself, kid,” he said, his voice low and venomous, his jaw clenched so tight I could see the muscle twitch. “Better get ready… because you’re about to dance to the tune of my song.”I didn't pay attention to him, let alone say a word to him. I crouched towards Alice quickly, who was now bleeding thoroughly from her hand, swiftly wrapping my arm under her head to help her up.“Get the door!” I yelled as I pulled her to her feet, gesturing to the guards. They swung forward at
Chapter 18Alice The day after I saw that disastrous headline was supposed to be a happy one for Leo. His school had planned a museum field trip… something he’d been talking about for weeks. But I let my instincts get the better part of me. I could no longer trust the school to keep him safe. Not after everything. If anything happened to him, I wouldn’t survive the guilt. I had to take him myself.“I’ll take him to the museum,” I told George as we prepared to leave that morning. He froze, his expression shifting to stunned concern. “Why?” His brows pulled together in confusion. “I thought the school provided a bus to take the kids there and back.”“I know,” I replied with a nod.“Then why insist on stressing yourself out like this?”“I’m not stressing myself, George!” I snapped, my temper flaring before I could stop it. “Leo is my son—my responsibility. If anything happens to him, I’ll never forgive myself. And I won’t forgive you either.”That ended the discussion.George didn’t ar
Chapter 17~Thomas~"I'm beyond disappointed in you, Sam," I snapped, my voice thunderous as I ran a hand furiously through my hair. "I gave you one simple task, and once again, you failed… miserably!"My anger burned hot enough to set the whole place ablaze. I had just arrived in the country, expecting to walk in and see the boy here. Instead, I come home to find out the mission was a complete disaster. How hard could it be to catch a damn child?Samantha dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her cheeks as she begged for forgiveness… but I didn’t want to hear it. “You know what? I’m done with this conversation. Get out of my house.”Her eyes widened in disbelief. “No, Thom, please… just hear me out.”She crawled towards me, desperation written all over her face, but I stepped back coldly before she could reach me.“I won’t say it again. Leave… or I’ll have the guards drag you out.”She stood up slowly, lifting her eyes to mine. Then, without another word, she turned and walked o
Chapter 16 George Alice stood frozen, her eyes locked on mine like she was trying to fix a puzzle. Then, without a word, she turned away… her back to me… as tears broke free from her eyes. “I've had enough humiliation,” she whispered, her voice shaking through her sniffles. “I… I just can’t anymore.” She turned back around, meeting my gaze, her face streaked with sweat and tears. “Can’t you see, George? My entire empire is hanging by a thread… My name is falling apart because of this same scandal. I don’t have the strength for more drama. I’m barely holding on.” “I get it, Alice. I truly do.” I reached out, gently taking her hands in mine, our faces just inches apart. “I understand everything you're feeling. But you need to give yourself a little grace. Trust me... your empire will survive this. You will survive this.” “But how, George?” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I'm watching everything I built fall apart.” “I know,” I said quickly, pulling her closer. “But you won’t
Chapter 15 George My grip tightened around the letter the moment Maria mentioned Leo’s name. My hands trembled as I scanned the words, my heart pounding. ‘Happy early birthday, Leo. Three weeks left. Enjoy the peace while it lasts.’The message hit me like a blow to the chest. For a long second, I just stared at the words, unable to look away. When the shock finally wore off, I sat up abruptly… and only then did I notice Maria was still standing quietly across the room, watching me. She furrowed her brows slightly, sensing the shift in my mood. “Is everything alright, sir?” I forced a calm nod, masking the storm building in my chest. “It’s nothing I can’t handle. Thanks for bringing this. You can go now.” She hesitated, like she wanted to say more, but eventually gave a slow nod and turned to leave. Just as her hand reached the doorknob, I spoke again… my voice sharper this time. “Maria.” She turned back immediately. “From now on, make sure Leo’s room is heavily
Chapter 14George The moment my lips touched hers, something deep within me shifted… a feeling I had spent so long trying to bury, to forget. But forgetting her? That was impossible.Every attempt to stay away, every reminder that I shouldn't want her, only drew me in closer. The harder I pushed her away, the stronger the pull became. The feelings just wouldn't let go.And now, given the chance to finally protect her, I wouldn’t hesitate. I’d give everything I had to keep her safe… even if it meant waging war against my own father.I pulled her gently from the embrace, letting our eyes lock in the thick heat of the moment.I held her hands firmly, like a commander ready to lay down the plan. Her eyes flickered with rising fear, her hands trembling softly beneath mine.“It’s okay, Alice. I’m here now,” I whispered, my gaze sweeping over her fragile frame. “You don’t have to be afraid anymore. I’m not going anywhere… not until all this is over. I promise.”She lifted her head slowly, h
