Eloise

I didn’t sleep.

I lay in bed with my eyes wide open, staring at the faint shadows across the ceiling, listening to the steady, soft breaths of Max as he slept against me. Every time I closed my eyes, the day returned in sharp flashes—Mike’s voice, the crackle of police radios, Damon’s warning that settled like a stone in my chest.

I wanted to cry myself to sleep. God, I wanted to just let it all out, bury my face in the pillow and sob until there was nothing left inside me. But Max was curled in my arms, his tiny body pressed close, his hair brushing my chin. He needed me to be steady more than I needed the relief of tears. So, I stayed still. I kept my arms tight around him, stroking his back every so often, humming under my breath when he shifted.

He was my priority. No matter how broken I felt, Max had to feel safe.

By the time the first streaks of morning light filtered through the curtains, my head throbbed from the weight of unshed tears. My eyes burned, but I hadn’t

  • Once Upon a Marriage    Chapter 117 The confrontation

Eloise The slam of the front door rattled through the hallway like an echo of my heartbeat. My shoes struck the marble floor too hard, the sound sharp and defiant, but I didn’t care if it woke the neighbors or if the guards outside thought I was running away. Mike’s voice followed me, calling my name once, twice, louder on the third time. “Eloise! Wait—” I didn’t. My keys were already in my hand, fingers trembling so violently I nearly dropped them as I shoved them into the ignition of my car. The engine roared to life, swallowing his voice as I pulled out of the driveway, tires screeching, headlights cutting through the night like I was chasing something, or maybe being chased. The steering wheel burned under my grip. My pulse was louder than the radio, louder than the wind shoving against the windows. I didn’t even notice the ache in my jaw until I realized my teeth were clenched so tightly it hurt. I wasn’t running away from Mike, not exactly. I was running toward the truth. T

I never liked the smell of safes. It wasn’t the iron, though the faint smell of metal always lingered, nor was it the dust. It was the way the air filled heavy inside them, sealed for years, carrying with it memories no one had wanted to touch. When the paramedics left, their stretcher wheels echoing down the hallway, I found myself back in my Father’s study, the space filled with silence. My fingers trailed over the mahogany desk as if I could steady myself on its familiar surface. Jadeline wasn’t home. I had called her, voice clipped, telling her about Father. She had sighed like it was nothing, promised she’d “Will head straight to the hospital when I'm done here .” Typical. But her absence left me free, and something inside me, call it instinct, call it suspicion, pulled me toward the safe again. The heavy door gaped open, the lock’s tumblers still warm from where I had turned them earlier. I knelt, the dim desk lamp spilling amber light across stacks of forgotten boxes, cracke

  • Once Upon a Marriage    Chapter 115 You and I are not done yet

Eloise – First Person POV “You and I are not done yet.” Damon’s voice was a low growl, the kind that slid under my skin and tried to burrow in. His eyes were narrowed, fixed on me like I was prey that had wandered too close. The air between us felt heavier, like it had been poured full of oil and smoke, thick enough to choke on. I didn’t move. Not because I was frozen in fear, though there was a sharp, cold coil of it in my gut, but because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch. Then another voice cut through the space like a blade. “No,” Mike said, his tone sharp, clipped. “You’re done.” I turned, startled. He stood in the doorway, broad-shouldered and still in his coat, his eyes locked on Damon with a heat I’d never seen from him before. And behind him, two uniformed officers stepped in, boots hitting the hardwood in slow, deliberate thuds. The shift in Damon’s expression was instant. The arrogance didn’t vanish, but it changed, twisting into somethin

  • Once Upon a Marriage    Chapter 114 A bet for blood

Eloise – First Person POV Rain had started by the time Mike’s voice broke through the frantic pounding of my heart. “You’re not going alone,” he said, his tone low, sharp, cutting against the restless clatter of raindrops against the atelier’s broken windows. I shook my head before he’d even finished. My hands were still trembling from the message, the image burned so deep into my brain it felt branded there. Max’s eyes, red, wide, terrified above the gag—were all I could see. “I have to,” I said, pushing past him toward the back hallway. My chest felt like it had been hollowed out and stuffed with molten lead. “If you come with me, Damon will think it’s a setup. He said—” “I don’t care what he said!” Mike’s voice rose, echoing off the concrete walls. He caught my wrist, his palm warm against my skin despite the damp chill in the air. “Eloise, you don’t know what Damon’s capable of—” “I know exactly what he’s capable of!” The words ripped out of me before I could stop them. My t

  • Once Upon a Marriage    Chapter 113 Smoke and shadows

Eloise – First Person POV The smell of smoke still clung to my clothes. It had seeped into the fibers, into my hair, my skin. Even though the fire department had left hours ago, the scent was a constant, nauseating reminder of how close I had come to losing everything. From my place behind the glass door of my office, I could see the cluster of reporters now outside the atelier. Microphones were raised like weapons, camera flashes strobing across the windows. Their voices were muffled through the thick glass, but every so often, one would hit a pitch that pierced through — “Eloise! Is it true the fire was set intentionally?” “Are you filing for bankruptcy after this?” “What about the Dior collection? Is it all gone?” I curled further into the small loveseat in the corner, pulling my knees to my chest. My phone sat on the table, its black screen like an accusing stare. I hadn’t answered calls. I hadn’t answered texts. I just… couldn’t. Not when every inch of me felt hollow and s
