Chapter 1

In the third year of her marriage, on the day Caleb Hampton's older brother died, Sydney Wilson asked for a divorce.

Caleb frowned in confusion. "All because I took a slap for Penny?"

'Penny. How affectionately he said her name,' Sydney thought.

The truth was, Penelope Monroe was his sister-in-law.

Sydney smiled coldly. "Yeah. That's why."

Could a single slap really shatter a marriage? The red mark on Caleb's face that night was hard to ignore. He had shielded Penelope so openly that even the Hampton family had been stunned. Only Sydney had not flinched.

Three days earlier, on their wedding anniversary…

Sydney had planned a surprise trip and taken a late-night flight to the city where Caleb worked. Instead of a warm reunion, she overheard him chatting with two friends.

"Caleb, man, I gotta say it. Running off every year on your anniversary? That's cold. Sydney's been nothing but good to you."

Caleb, usually composed and gentlemanly, looked weary. "You think I want this? If I didn't avoid her, she'd never believe I haven't touched her all these years."

"She…" One friend, clearly holding back, finally snapped. "You mean Penelope? Caleb, are you out of your damn mind? Are you gonna keep pining after her even if she's got another kid on the way?"

He snorted. "And what about Sydney? You keep treating her like this. Aren't you afraid Julian Sterling's gonna come after you?"

"He won't." Caleb rubbed his fingers together calmly. "She married me. That was it for them. Julian's had her blocked on WhatsApp for three years now."

Outside the room, Sydney walked away quietly. Her steps were steady, but her fingers trembled almost imperceptibly.

She had suspected someone else. She had asked around, tried to find out who, but no one had said a word. She had guessed many possibilities but never thought it would be Penelope—the same "sister-in-law" she had greeted politely for three years.

'God, how humiliating,' she thought bitterly.

When Sydney left the club, the sky opened up. She did not react as the rain drenched her like a broken doll.

That night, she took a late flight back to Jouleston.

The moment she got home, she fell ill. She burned with fever for two days. Just as she started to recover, Lucas Hampton, Caleb's older brother, had an accident.

A week later, Lucas's funeral was held in Jouleston.

Sydney had barely slept two or three hours each night at the Hampton residence. After the funeral, as she stepped out of the cemetery, her body moved forward while her soul dragged behind.

Their driver waited at the gate.

Sydney climbed in and closed her eyes. "Jack, take me home."

"Not going back to the family house?" he asked.

"No."

The funeral was over, but the drama at the Hamptons had just begun.

Lucas was the eldest son and the family's golden child. He died because Penelope had insisted on skydiving. His equipment failed, and he fell from high altitude. By the time they reached the hospital, it was to stitch his body, not to save him.

The Hampton family's fury at Penelope had not cooled. Sydney had no interest in watching her husband defend another woman. She had her own life to manage.

Unexpectedly, as the car started moving, the rear door opened.

Caleb stood there, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. Tall, lean, composed, but with a rare flicker of discomfort on his face.

"Syd, heading home?" he asked.

"Mm." Sydney barely glanced before spotting the woman next to him. It was Penelope, and she was holding a chubby little boy.

Penelope and Lucas' son, Timothy Hampton, was four years old. He was round and soft like a beach ball.

Before Sydney could ask what they were doing there, Timothy scrambled into the car as if it was his. "Aunt Sydney, can you give me and Mommy a ride home?"

Sydney furrowed her brow and glanced at Caleb.

He pressed his lips together. "Mom and Dad are still furious. Let Penny and Timmy stay at our place for now."

Seeing her hesitation, he added, "Didn't you say you wanted a kid? Now's a good time to practice with Timmy."

Sydney almost laughed out loud, then remembered where she was and held it in.

So now he was sending Penelope and her son to stay with them while he faced the heat back at the Hamptons? What a noble man.

Back home, the housekeeper, Nancy Potts, had already prepared the guest room. Caleb must have called ahead.

Sydney did not care. After a shower, she collapsed into bed and slept like the dead. When she finally woke, it was 9:00 p.m. As she reached for her phone, it rang. It was her best friend, Tiffany Voss.

"I've drafted the divorce agreement just like you wanted. Want me to send it over for you to review?" Tiffany asked.

"Thanks, Ms. Voss, my beloved lawyer." Sydney's voice was groggy and soft. "No need. Just call a courier and have it delivered."

"You're in a rush?" Tiffany sounded concerned. "Are you sure about this? Caleb might not be the best husband, but in some ways…"

Sydney switched on the lamp and sat up. Her head cleared. "I'm sure, Tiff. I caught him jerking off to another woman's photo."

Raymond wanted to tell Julian not to act on impulse. After all, Caleb was technically the biological father of both their nephews. The thought had barely formed when his scalp prickled, and he mentally slapped himself. If that ever slipped out, Julian would kill him on the spot—maybe twice, for good measure.Desperation kicked his brain into overdrive.Just as Julian raised his hand to knock on the door, Raymond blurted, "Wait, Sydney's pregnant. If you start a fight and she gets upset, what if it affects the baby?"That did the trick. The fury radiating off Julian ebbed almost at once. After a tense pause, his hand lowered slowly. The darkness in his eyes flickered before he gave a sharp, humorless smile. "Afraid I'll kill him and make your unborn nephew an orphan?"Raymond bit back the urge to say, "That's your nephew too."Self-preservation won out. He coughed lightly instead. "That's not it. Besides, who knows if it's even my nephew yet?"Truth be told, he still didn't beli

IIf it had been Raymond in that situation, he would have refused to let it go by now.Raymond narrowed his eyes. "What, nothing to say?"Tiffany speared another bite of food and glanced at him lazily. "I'm just afraid the truth might hurt your ego."Sydney burst out laughing. The sound was easy and genuine, and the tension in her shoulders finally eased.Maybe Julian had been right. Who she was didn't matter. The people who cared about her—her friends, her mentors—had nothing to do with her family name or her past. She was herself, and that was enough.Knowing better than to dig his own grave with Tiffany's sharp tongue, Raymond shifted the topic back to business. "Penelope's out of the police station."He added quickly, "No one from my family pulled strings. She's pregnant, and the station didn't want to take responsibility if something happened."Sydney's calm expression didn't change. There wasn't even a flicker of surprise or discomfort. That startled Raymond, and he blurt

Tiffany was surprised but not shocked. There was still a long road between those two—one tangled with misunderstandings and even blood-deep resentment. That kind of thing couldn't be fixed overnight. They needed time.Hence, being the sensible one, Tiffany said gently, "I'll head back. I just wanted to check on you. Seeing you're fine, I can rest easy."Sydney's face flickered with guilt, as if she'd somehow wronged her best friend. Then Julian's smooth, unhurried voice broke the silence. "Since you're already here, stay for dinner."He nodded toward the dining table. It was obvious he meant the food Tiffany had brought. There was plenty, enough for more than two people. She had probably planned for everyone to share the meal, but after walking into the heavy, uncertain air between Sydney and Julian, she'd been ready to leave.Sydney, quick to defend her, added softly, "She's the one who bought it."Julian arched a brow, neither confirming nor denying it, his expression unreadab

Julian's low voice carried a teasing smile. "What are you running for? Don't want me to hold you anymore?""Who asked you to?" Sydney shot back.Pride made her deny it instantly, though her voice trembled. Before she could take another step, Julian stood and pulled her effortlessly into his arms with a faint tug on their linked pinkies. He held her tightly and steadily against his chest. One arm locked around her waist, his breath warm at her temple as a soft chuckle escaped him. "Fine, then I'm the one who needs a hug. Happy now?"He tilted his head, his lips brushing the crown of her hair. "Still not going to hold me back?"His chest felt solid and hot beneath her palms, his heartbeat steady against her ear. Even his scent—the faint trace of sandalwood she knew so well—wrapped around her like memory itself. The unexpected warmth of his embrace made something inside her finally settle, as if the restless heart that had been wandering for days had found its way home. Her ears b

Sydney wanted to tell him, "Julian, it turns out I don't have parents."No, that wasn't quite it. Everything she had lived as, everyone she thought she was—all of it had belonged to someone else. Even the name Sydney wasn't hers. She didn't even know who she really was. When Julian lowered his gaze, he met the dazed, wounded look in her eyes. Something inside him softened. He fought the urge to kiss her, one hand steadying her waist, the other tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear."What's wrong? Is it the online stuff? Feeling hurt?" His voice came low and warm.Anyone else seeing him like this would have sworn they were imagining it.But Sydney had seen this side of him countless times before—the quiet patience, the way he always asked gently when she was upset. He had never mocked her emotions or told her she was being dramatic. Before everything between them fell apart, he had always respected what she felt and carried it without complaint. As such, this tenderness di

Sydney had never liked Penelope, but Florence was a kind soul."Sydney." Florence's tone, weary from days of turmoil, softened the moment she heard Sydney's gentle voice. "I'm heading back to Jouleston today. When you have time, come to Seraph Villa again for my treatments.""So soon?" Sydney exclaimed. She knew how deep Florence's guilt and affection for her younger daughter ran. By all logic, after finally finding the lost child she had yearned for, Florence should have stayed at the old manor for a few more days.Florence caught her meaning but only smiled lightly. "What's this? Don't tell me you don't want to see me anymore.""Of course not," Sydney replied without hesitation. "I promised to heal your legs, and I'll keep that promise."That should have reassured her, yet Florence's chest tightened instead. Because what Sydney really meant was that, from now on, their connection would be no more than doctor and patient. And that was exactly what Sydney intended. With everythi
