Chapter 1

In the third year of her marriage, on the day Caleb Hampton's older brother died, Sydney Wilson asked for a divorce.

Caleb frowned in confusion. "All because I took a slap for Penny?"

'Penny. How affectionately he said her name,' Sydney thought.

The truth was, Penelope Monroe was his sister-in-law.

Sydney smiled coldly. "Yeah. That's why."

Could a single slap really shatter a marriage? The red mark on Caleb's face that night was hard to ignore. He had shielded Penelope so openly that even the Hampton family had been stunned. Only Sydney had not flinched.

Three days earlier, on their wedding anniversary…

Sydney had planned a surprise trip and taken a late-night flight to the city where Caleb worked. Instead of a warm reunion, she overheard him chatting with two friends.

"Caleb, man, I gotta say it. Running off every year on your anniversary? That's cold. Sydney's been nothing but good to you."

Caleb, usually composed and gentlemanly, looked weary. "You think I want this? If I didn't avoid her, she'd never believe I haven't touched her all these years."

"She…" One friend, clearly holding back, finally snapped. "You mean Penelope? Caleb, are you out of your damn mind? Are you gonna keep pining after her even if she's got another kid on the way?"

He snorted. "And what about Sydney? You keep treating her like this. Aren't you afraid Julian Sterling's gonna come after you?"

"He won't." Caleb rubbed his fingers together calmly. "She married me. That was it for them. Julian's had her blocked on WhatsApp for three years now."

Outside the room, Sydney walked away quietly. Her steps were steady, but her fingers trembled almost imperceptibly.

She had suspected someone else. She had asked around, tried to find out who, but no one had said a word. She had guessed many possibilities but never thought it would be Penelope—the same "sister-in-law" she had greeted politely for three years.

'God, how humiliating,' she thought bitterly.

When Sydney left the club, the sky opened up. She did not react as the rain drenched her like a broken doll.

That night, she took a late flight back to Jouleston.

The moment she got home, she fell ill. She burned with fever for two days. Just as she started to recover, Lucas Hampton, Caleb's older brother, had an accident.

A week later, Lucas's funeral was held in Jouleston.

Sydney had barely slept two or three hours each night at the Hampton residence. After the funeral, as she stepped out of the cemetery, her body moved forward while her soul dragged behind.

Their driver waited at the gate.

Sydney climbed in and closed her eyes. "Jack, take me home."

"Not going back to the family house?" he asked.

"No."

The funeral was over, but the drama at the Hamptons had just begun.

Lucas was the eldest son and the family's golden child. He died because Penelope had insisted on skydiving. His equipment failed, and he fell from high altitude. By the time they reached the hospital, it was to stitch his body, not to save him.

The Hampton family's fury at Penelope had not cooled. Sydney had no interest in watching her husband defend another woman. She had her own life to manage.

Unexpectedly, as the car started moving, the rear door opened.

Caleb stood there, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. Tall, lean, composed, but with a rare flicker of discomfort on his face.

"Syd, heading home?" he asked.

"Mm." Sydney barely glanced before spotting the woman next to him. It was Penelope, and she was holding a chubby little boy.

Penelope and Lucas' son, Timothy Hampton, was four years old. He was round and soft like a beach ball.

Before Sydney could ask what they were doing there, Timothy scrambled into the car as if it was his. "Aunt Sydney, can you give me and Mommy a ride home?"

Sydney furrowed her brow and glanced at Caleb.

He pressed his lips together. "Mom and Dad are still furious. Let Penny and Timmy stay at our place for now."

Seeing her hesitation, he added, "Didn't you say you wanted a kid? Now's a good time to practice with Timmy."

Sydney almost laughed out loud, then remembered where she was and held it in.

So now he was sending Penelope and her son to stay with them while he faced the heat back at the Hamptons? What a noble man.

Back home, the housekeeper, Nancy Potts, had already prepared the guest room. Caleb must have called ahead.

Sydney did not care. After a shower, she collapsed into bed and slept like the dead. When she finally woke, it was 9:00 p.m. As she reached for her phone, it rang. It was her best friend, Tiffany Voss.

"I've drafted the divorce agreement just like you wanted. Want me to send it over for you to review?" Tiffany asked.

"Thanks, Ms. Voss, my beloved lawyer." Sydney's voice was groggy and soft. "No need. Just call a courier and have it delivered."

"You're in a rush?" Tiffany sounded concerned. "Are you sure about this? Caleb might not be the best husband, but in some ways…"

Sydney switched on the lamp and sat up. Her head cleared. "I'm sure, Tiff. I caught him jerking off to another woman's photo."

Caleb stayed so busy that he often forgot he still had a wife at home.Sydney paused, then turned back to look at him. "How did you find out?"She didn't bother denying it.Caleb wasn't surprised, yet a strange pressure filled his chest, making it hard to breathe."I guessed," he forced out.Sydney smiled faintly. "I thought you'd never notice."He stared at her. The tightness in his chest made his brow furrow. "Am I really that incompetent as a husband?""You're very competent," Sydney said, her smile deepening. "Just only when it comes to Penelope."He was not a good husband, but he was an excellent lover. She meant what she said. When the words reached Caleb's ears, they felt more like a slap in the face. He exhaled slowly, trying to ease the pressure in his chest. "I'll make sure she moves out soon. When that's done, I'll come pick you up.""We'll see," Sydney replied, leaving the rest unsaid. Those words made Caleb feel even more suffocated. He almost panicked and grabb

Caleb suddenly turned to her, eyes sharp and unblinking. "Also? Who else goes by the nickname Precious?"It wasn't exactly rare. Plenty of kids were called that growing up. Still, the way he was staring made Sydney feel uneasy. She dropped her gaze, hiding her reaction. "No one. Just figured it's a pretty common name."Today had already shown her how far Caleb would go to protect Penelope. If he found out Penelope used to bully her? He'd take her side again. Or worse, he'd let Penelope twist the truth and play the victim. And Sydney wasn't even completely sure. Not yet. 'But this pendant…'She pressed her lips together, then looked up with an innocent expression. "Cal, this pendant is really unique. Can I borrow it for a few days? I have a friend who makes jewelry. I want to get one just like it."Maybe it was guilt over what happened to Timothy. Or maybe he'd always known he owed her more than he could repay. Either way, faced with Sydney's soft, slightly pleading look, Caleb he

Caleb rubbed his fingers together, frowning. "She just panicked at that moment.""Was it really panic, or was it premeditated? Haven't you already figured that out?"Sydney marveled at his refusal to face the truth. She held his gaze, calm and steady, until he finally exhaled and looked away. "Syd, I know she crossed the line. I'll make it up to you on her behalf—"He hadn't even finished before the phone on the table buzzed.Sydney didn't need to check the screen. The look on his face told her exactly who it was—Penelope."Sorry, I need to take this."Sydney smiled faintly. "Go ahead."He had brought her here to apologize, hadn't even waited for the food to arrive, and already he was walking away to take a call from the person who started it all.'What a joke,' she thought."Ma'am? Miss?" The server had to call her twice before she blinked and looked up. A dish had already been set in front of her."Hm? What is it?""Your companion must have left this pendant on the chair."

Charlotte didn't quite understand what that line meant, but the atmosphere in the elevator turned awkward in an instant.Sydney noticed the flicker of discomfort on Caleb's face and almost laughed. Then she looked up and met Julian's direct, unwavering gaze."Ms. Wilson, seems like you're not too busy on the project. No need for overtime?"It was a jab without bias. He spared no one.Every word reeked of textbook capitalism, as if he wanted everyone to work themselves into the ground.Sydney's smile faltered. She replied stiffly, "What's left can be done from home.""Oh?" Julian tilted his head, thoughtful. "Even a hopeless romantic like you still has energy for after-hours work?"Sydney rarely felt embarrassed, but she wanted nothing more than to throw herself down the elevator shaft right now.Everyone probably assumed she had wanted to marry Caleb out of obsessive love.Caleb certainly didn't notice her discomfort. If anything, he looked pleased, chuckling softly. "Don't te

Everyone was responsible for the project, so Henry called the whole team to the lounge for snacks.Sydney understood the value of being part of the group, so she went along. She hadn't expected Charlotte to pull her aside the moment she arrived. "Syd, are you alright after last night? The way Mr. Sterling talks… He doesn't mean anything by it. That's just how he is. Don't take it personally.""I'm fine." Sydney was caught off guard and couldn't quite read her tone. "Thanks for the snacks."Julian had made it clear he wanted nothing to do with her. So why was Charlotte being so friendly?"No need to be so formal." Charlotte smiled, then turned to the three men from the Medicine team and added lightly, "Don't underestimate Syd just because she's a woman. I expect full cooperation from everyone."Sydney lowered her voice. "Ms. Lindstrom, you don't need to treat me like a kid sister. Whatever you think is going on between me and Mr. Sterling—it's not like that."Charlotte's smile de

Sydney led the two police officers into the surveillance room. Marcus was already waiting.Once they finished watching the footage, the officers' expressions changed."Mrs. Hampton, please wait a moment," the female officer said."Alright," Sydney replied calmly. The male officer stepped outside to make a phone call. He returned a few minutes later, met Sydney's eyes, and said, "Mrs. Hampton, the case has been dropped. We won't need to copy the surveillance footage after all."There was no doubt whose orders they were following.Marcus hadn't expected Caleb to sink this low. Their mentor had been right all along. Caleb, inside and out, had never been worthy of Sydney.Sydney didn't seem surprised. "Got it. By the way, can I sue Penelope for defamation?"The male officer looked uneasy but offered a warning. "That might be hard to prosecute."Whatever the reason, Sydney didn't care to ask. She smiled faintly. "Alright. Thank you for coming all this way."After Marcus walked the
