The Hockey Captain’s Contract with the Cold Alpha Sophie came to the settlement with one goal: win the final hockey match and return to the city with her team. She never expected to discover that the strange people around them were not ordinary villagers, or that the man who ruled the territory was a powerful Alpha. When a rogue attacks her team, Sophie learns the truth in the worst possible way. Her own boyfriend chooses to sacrifice her to save himself, leaving her at the mercy of a creature she cannot understand. Then Magnus arrives. Cold, feared, and completely in control, he saves her before the rogue can take her. But Magnus soon discovers something even more dangerous than the rogue. Sophie is his mate. The human hockey captain has no idea what the bond between them means, and Magnus has no intention of telling her yet. When Sophie insists on returning to the city, Magnus gives her a choice she cannot easily refuse: stay in his territory under a contract, or watch the hockey final disappear. Sophie agrees, believing she is only making a temporary deal with a cold Alpha. But Magnus knows there is much more at stake. Because the longer Sophie stays in his territory, the harder it becomes to hide the truth. She is his mate. And someone else may already know why she was brought into his pack.

CHAPTER ONE

Sophie’s POV

We had been in the settlement for two days, and I still could not understand the place.

The five of us had come from the city for the final hockey match, and the organizers had arranged for us to stay here while we trained with some of the local players and introduced the sport to them. It was supposed to be a simple trip, but since we arrived, I had noticed too many things that did not make sense.

The final was being held in the settlement because the organizers had reached a special agreement with the people who controlled the territory. They had promised to provide the rink, accommodation, transportation, and security for all the teams, which was why we had been brought here instead of staying in the city.

The people here called themselves a pack, and I had heard words like Alpha, Omega, and Lycan more than once. I had no idea what any of them meant, and whenever I tried to ask, I never got a proper answer.

I was sitting outside the guesthouse with Rolan, my boyfriend, when I finally brought it up again.

“Do you understand what they mean when they call someone an Alpha?” I asked, watching a few villagers walk past us.

Rolan glanced at me with a small smile. “You are still thinking about that?”

“How can I not? We have been here for two days, and I keep hearing words I have never heard people use before.”

“They probably have their own way of doing things.”

“Maybe, but they also keep warning us about the forest, and yesterday one of them told me we should never go there after dark.”

Rolan laughed softly. “Then don’t go there.”

I turned to him. “That’s not an explanation.”

“You always need an explanation for everything.”

“Because I like knowing what is happening around me.”

He smiled and squeezed my hand. “We are here for hockey, Sophie, not to learn the history of every strange settlement we visit.”

I was about to answer when I noticed something moving between the trees.

I stared for a moment, but there was nothing there.

“Did you see that?”

Rolan followed my gaze.

“See what?”

“I thought I saw someone.”

He looked toward the forest again before turning back to me.

“Probably one of the villagers.”

“Maybe.”

I did not believe it, but I let it go.

We sat there for a few more minutes, talking about the final and how tired we were after training. Everything felt normal again until a loud sound suddenly came from the road.

Rolan stood up.

“What was that?”

“I don’t know.”

Another sound followed, this  time, it sounded closer.

We both looked toward the road.

A man suddenly appeared.

He was walking toward us slowly, his clothes torn and dirty, his face covered in scratches.

I watched him carefully. “Maybe he needs help.”

Rolan didn’t answer.

The man stopped several feet away.

His eyes fixed on us.

Something about his stare made my stomach tighten.

Then he moved.

I barely had time to react before he rushed toward Rolan and grabbed him.

“Rolan!”

Rolan struggled as the man lifted him from the ground.

I ran toward them. “Let him go!”

I grabbed Rolan’s arm and pulled.

Before I knew it, the other three had gathered.

The man didn’t even move, I pulled harder.

Rolan looked terrified. “Get him off me!”

I tried again, but the man’s strength was impossible.

He suddenly pushed me away.

I stumbled backward.

Then Rolan looked at me.

His eyes moved between me and the man holding him.

And then he said the words I never expected to hear from him. “Take her.”

I froze. “What?”

“Take her instead.”

The other three exchanged quick glances.

None of them stepped forward to help me. Instead, they moved aside, leaving me exposed to the stranger.

My heart sank.

They wanted him to take me too.

My mouth fell open. “Rolan…”

He didn’t look at me. “Take her. Leave me alone.”

The man released him.

Rolan fell to the ground and quickly moved away.

I stared at him in disbelief.

He had chosen himself.

Without hesitation.

The stranger turned toward me.

I stepped backward. “No.”

He came closer.

I turned and ran, I didn’t hear Rolan calling after me, I didn’t hear anything except my own breathing and the heavy footsteps behind me, I ran as fast as I could but  he was faster, much  faster.

His hand suddenly caught me from behind.

I screamed as he dragged me backward.

I fought him with everything I had.

My hands shook as I tried to pull myself free. “Let me go!”

He tightened his grip.

I kicked him, but it did nothing.

He dragged me toward the trees.

I tried to scream again, but fear had closed my throat.

I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think.

All I could do was struggle against him as he pulled me deeper into the darkness.

Then a powerful voice suddenly cut through the night. “STOP IT!”

The man holding me froze.

I froze too.

Slowly, he turned his head toward the voice.

I couldn’t see the person who had spoken.

But from the way the man holding me suddenly stiffened, I knew one thing.

He was afraid
