Chapter 2

Author: Lean
"What?" Tiffany's mind blanked for a second. She hadn't expected someone as reserved as Sydney to blurt out something like that.

But what stunned her more was that scumbag Caleb actually had the nerve to humiliate Sydney like this.

Tiffany muttered a curse under her breath, then said, "Screw delivery. I'll bring the agreement myself. Then I'll head back to the office and work overtime."

There was no way she was letting some two-wheeled courier outrun her four wheels today.

After hanging up, even Sydney was surprised by how easily the words had come out. Maybe it was because the resentment had been building for so long, clogging her chest, her thoughts, every part of her.

Just like that night at the club, when Caleb had said it himself—he had never touched her. No one would believe it, but after three years of marriage, she was still a virgin.

At first, she had wondered if something might be wrong with him. But later, she caught him more than once in his study, clutching a photo album and pleasuring himself. The low, guttural moans he had made—each one had felt like a slap to her face.

Once, when he realized she'd seen him, he pulled her into his arms and murmured into her neck, "Syd, I'm sorry. I just… I was afraid of hurting you. I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I used your photo instead."

What a joke. And the saddest part? She had believed him and had actually blushed.

But the night she flew back to Jouleston, groggy from fever meds, she used what little strength she had to pry open the locked cabinet in his study. Inside, she found the album. Every page was filled with Penelope—radiant, vibrant, full of life. Every smile and glance was captured like a treasure.

Sydney had never felt more like the punchline of a bad joke.

In a daze, memories came drifting back. She remembered tagging along behind Caleb like a little shadow. But in truth, she hadn't been following him. She'd been following her older brother, who was always by his side. She had seen Caleb so often that eventually, she started to think that marrying him wouldn't be so bad.

Caleb had been patient, gentle, always bringing her little gifts when he visited her brother. Among all his friends, he had seemed the most refined and courteous. And yet this supposed gentleman would rather touch himself to his sister-in-law than lay a hand on his own wife.

Sydney hadn't expected Tiffany to show up so fast. She had just finished getting ready and hadn't even made it downstairs when the doorbell rang.

Tiffany arrived with the kind of energy that said, "If the courthouse was open, I would've dragged you both there on the spot."

Sydney felt a little steadier with the agreement in hand. But then a sharp crack echoed through the house.

Before she could react, Nancy rushed down the stairs, face tight with worry. "Ms. Wilson—"

"What is it?"

"Timmy broke the family photo in your bedroom."

Sydney assumed it was just the frame. But then Nancy handed her the pieces, and her face went pale. Her parents had died in an accident when she was five. That photo had been all she had left of them. Her only keepsake.

She clutched the shattered remains and stormed upstairs. At the top of the stairs, Penelope stepped out of her room with her son in her arms.

Sydney's voice turned icy. "Penelope, that was my room."

"Uncle Caleb said this is my home now," Timothy piped up, puffed with bravado. "Uncle Caleb also said he's going to take care of me and Mommy like a real dad!"

Sydney glanced at Penelope, who showed no sign of correcting or scolding her son. She gave a cold laugh, crouched a little, and looked Timothy in the eye. "Do you know what Santa Claus does to children like you on Christmas?"

The boy lifted his chin proudly. "He gives me lots of candy!"

"Wrong." She shook her head, smiling sweetly. "He cuts off the hands of children who break things, bakes them in the oven, and feeds them to monsters."

"WAAAHHH!" Timothy, still just a child, burst into tears and clung to Penelope like his life depended on it.

Penelope glared at her. "He's just a kid. Did you really have to scare him like that?"

"You can't even teach your own child how to behave. What else are you good for besides extreme sports?" Sydney didn't wait for a reply. She turned and walked away.

That night, a black Maybach rolled into the driveway.

Sydney stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching as Caleb got out. Timothy ran to him immediately, dragging Penelope behind him. The three of them looked like a perfect little family.

Eventually, someone knocked at the door.

Caleb stepped inside. His crisp white shirt and purposeful stride clashed with the tension in his voice. "You scared Timmy?"

"I did," Sydney said, gesturing toward her nightstand. "He destroyed my family photo."

Caleb froze. For the first time, he realized he didn't know the whole story.

He reached out to ruffle her hair, but she stepped back. Thinking she was still angry, he softened his tone. "That's my fault. Let me apologize on his behalf. Do you want anything? I'll make it up to you."

Sydney smiled faintly. "Anything at all?"

Caleb nodded. "Of course."

"I only want two things." She handed him the documents she had prepared.

Caleb glanced at the property transfer contract and signed without hesitation. The second document he flipped straight to the last page and signed just as quickly. When it came to money, he was always generous.

Afterward, he let out a slow breath and gently pulled her into his arms. "Syd, how did your brother raise you to be so obedient and sensible?"

Sydney felt a wave of nausea. Just as she was about to shove him away, there was a knock on the half-open door.

Caleb instinctively stepped back the moment he saw who it was.

Sydney froze. And in that instant, everything clicked. He had gone three years without touching her just to stay loyal to the woman he truly loved. Now that they were under the same roof, he had to perform the part.

Penelope looked mildly annoyed. "Cal, Timmy won't sleep unless you're with him."

"I'm coming." Caleb turned to Sydney. "You're not mad, are you?"

"Not at all," she said flatly.

After he left, Sydney pulled out the second document. It was the divorce agreement.

Yes, she was obedient. So obedient, she'd prepared the divorce papers herself and handed them right to his face.

Sydney felt a sudden calm settle in her chest. She turned to Tiffany and saw Raymond speak first. "Sydney, go with Julian to the car.""Right." Tiffany had been thinking the same thing. If she had known her family would cause this much trouble, she would not have agreed to bring Sydney. It was dangerous. Even a shove or a fall could hurt the baby.Tiffany patted Sydney's shoulder and gave a quick nod. "Go. I can handle this.""Don't worry," Raymond added without moving. "If she can't handle it, I will."Sydney had already guessed Raymond wanted a second chance. She saw Tiffany did not mind and nodded. "All right. I'll go."With Raymond there, the men would not dare get rough. The thugs tried to block Sydney, but when they looked toward the alley mouth and saw who waited, their faces turned white. They realized how much trouble they had nearly provoked.Sydney walked to the car.Tiffany stayed calm. She handed the loan contract back to the bald man."You sure you still want me

It was not that Tiffany feared exposure. It was who would know. If it had been anyone else, she would have died of shame. On the surface, Tiffany seemed untouchable. She worked at a top-tier law firm, built a gold-medal reputation, wore sharp suits, and kept a calm poise. Behind that shine, her family rotted at the roots.Sydney reached over and patted her head, gentle but firm."Even if it were someone else, it wouldn't matter, Tiffany. None of this is your fault. You've already done more than enough."She had not chosen her bloodline. Whatever her birth parents had done, she had no say in it.…Tiffany's family still lived in an old, unrenovated alley in Jouleston.Neon lights lit the sky. The air smelled of street food and carried steady chatter. The closer they came to her house, the quieter it grew. The silence felt heavy enough that Sydney took Tiffany's hand without thinking."It really feels like something's wrong," she murmured."Wrong…" Tiffany tried to dismiss it,

The new drug project at the research institute had slowed. The suffocating urgency eased, and Sydney finally had time to breathe. No more endless nights of overtime. At dusk, Tiffany drove by Sydney's building just as Sydney left work.Sydney straightened her desk and packed her things. She rode home with Tiffany.Tiffany kept one hand on the wheel and raised an eyebrow. "I've been thinking. Maybe things between you and Julian aren't what you think they are."Sydney blinked. "What do you mean?"Tiffany went on, "You haven't said it out loud, but you've been assuming he made his choice, and that choice wasn't you."Tiffany had seen that quiet disappointment all over Sydney's face the night before. She continued, "But today, you'd barely stepped out the door when Julian showed up. He looked like he wanted to talk to you."Tiffany glanced sideways at her friend. She had dealt with Julian enough to know his normal: cold, controlled, unreadable. That morning his eyes showed somethin

The treatment went almost too smoothly. When it ended, Jeremiah accepted the new prescription Sydney had written. He braced himself on his cane and led them to the door. "Dr. Wilson, thank you for coming.""I will not delay your care," she replied in a measured voice. He did not wait for her to ask. He raised the matter himself.Sydney pressed her lips together. She remained wary, but she softened her tone. "Mr. Clifford, if there is any progress, please let me know."Julian's words had eased her sense of being adrift, but she still needed to know why she had turned up alone in that Southeast Lavian den years ago Had someone trafficked her? Had someone abandoned her? Or, worse, had her birth parents dealt drugs? The thought chilled her.Another clear, unforgiving thought rose at the same time. Even if they were alive, she would never acknowledge them. Her life had been ruined once. She would not let her child inherit that same uncertainty.…On the drive back to the institute,

The metallic lid of the lighter clicked open and shut repeatedly—a faint clack beneath the hum of the quiet night. Each time he flicked it, a thin blue flame rose and vanished, glimmering weakly in the wash of moonlight.…The next morning, Julian showed up at Sydney's door almost to the minute. When the doorbell rang, Tiffany answered."Looking for Sydney?" she asked, still tying up her hair."She just left," Tiffany added when she saw his face. "She had a home visit scheduled and left about five minutes ago."Julian's brows knit. "With Madam Hutton?""Nope." Tiffany shook her head. "Someone connected to the Shepard family, I think. I didn't ask for details."…Sydney had indeed left five minutes earlier. Marcus had already been waiting for her in the parking lot. Before she got in, he grabbed the bag from the passenger seat and handed it to her once she buckled up."Breakfast," he said simply."Thanks, Marc." She smiled, took the bread and milk without fuss, tore open the

"No!" Eloise's voice came out almost as a shout. Now was not the time for Victor to learn the truth about his parentage. That boy was nothing like Julian. He lacked his calm and restraint. If he found out too soon, everything would spiral out of control.Eloise raised her head to meet Julian's gaze, and for the first time, real regret washed over her. She should have let him die with his parents back then. If she hadn't gone soft in that one foolish moment, she wouldn't be facing this rabid wolf today. But now wasn't the time to bare her claws. Grinding her teeth until her jaw ached, she steadied her voice and even managed a smile."How did you know I met him?" she asked lightly.Or rather, how long had he known about her connection with Flint? She had hidden it well, or so she had thought.Julian's tone stayed flat and cold. "When I ask you something, just answer it."Her fingers trembled with fury. 'Does this ungrateful brat even know who he is speaking to? Even if I am not hi
