Chapter 378

Author: Lean
Sydney was a doctor, but she rarely practiced what she preached. She could list off endless health tips for her patients, yet in her own life? Sweets, ice-cold drinks, spicy food, greasy food—whatever looked good, she ate it. So, occasional stomach discomfort was nothing new.

Even so, Caleb couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. "Are you sure it's just your stomach acting up?"

"What else could it be?" Sydney spoke as if it were nothing. "It's not like it's serious. I checked my pulse. I know my body."

"If you say so." Caleb still didn't look convinced.

When the meal ended, he didn't linger. He stood and left.

Sydney followed him to the door and called softly, "Yoyo, come on. Time for a walk."

"Woof!" Yoyo leapt from the couch, grabbed his leash between his teeth, and trotted over eagerly.

Sydney bent to fasten the leash, but Tiffany frowned. "Maybe I should take Yoyo instead. What if you slip?"

Yoyo might have been older, but Julian had always pampered him. He was

  • Once a Doormat, Now Untouchable   Chapter 589

The living room grew so quiet that a pin dropping would have been heard. In one another's eyes, the Huttons saw the same storm of feelings: relief, the joy of something long lost finally returning, and a crushing heartache that came with it.They had long suspected that Sydney was Vee. Even so, none of them could silence the fear of that 1-in-10,000 chance. What if they were wrong again? They were not.Years of yearning had finally found an answer. Their Vee was not only alive, but gentle, composed, independent, and exceptional. The joy was overwhelming. The ache was no less so.Florence's tears would not stop.Raymond sprang to his feet. "I'm going to find Sydney right now!"There was no way he could remain seated."Sit down." Diana drew a steadying breath, forcing down the surge of joy in her chest. "We deal with the mess at home tonight. Then we bring her back properly."Everyone knew who she meant by "the mess." It was Penelope and Megan.James nodded and turned to Raymon

After going downstairs, Sydney and Julian finished breakfast when a call came in from the research institute. The component analysis report was out.Sydney skimmed the report in her inbox. The faint relief on her face vanished almost immediately. She and Julian headed for the hospital at once.Only after they got into the car did Julian ask, "Is it serious?""Yes." Sydney gave a small nod. "Just like Alan said yesterday."The poison was far too complex. If the antidote was even slightly inaccurate, it would trigger the remaining dormant toxins and cause them to spread rapidly. When they arrived at the hospital, the two walked toward the ward together.Just as they reached the door, Julian stopped. "You go in first. I need to return a work call.""Okay." Sydney did not think much of it and went straight inside.Julian walked to the end of the corridor and took out his phone. His expression turned cold. "Still nothing from Caleb?"Elliot answered, "No. For the past two days, he

Raymond had no strength left to argue. The three siblings asked Florence a few more questions about Sydney's condition and finally felt reassured.James then mentioned the gala scheduled for the following evening. "Will Sydney attend?"Diana shook her head. "Probably not." The original plan had been to use the gala, with its gathering of high-society figures, to disown Megan completely and formally announce Sydney's identity. But with Eliana hospitalized at such a critical moment, Sydney was unlikely to have any interest in attending a social event. That was also why Florence had not mentioned the gala when she went to Delta Mansion that evening. She did not want to put Sydney in a difficult position. Unless the antidote could be obtained and delivered to the hospital before the gala.…Elsewhere, Jeremiah was equally troubled. What could be more important than reuniting with one's biological parents? His instincts told him that tomorrow night presented the best opportunity t

Clearly, the two of them were not speaking about the same thing. Even so, Florence felt a small measure of comfort. At the same time, the ache in her heart deepened. She had never wanted to raise her daughter to be this understanding, this gentle to a fault. She would have preferred a willful little girl. When Florence thought of how many hardships Sydney must have endured to become this way, her heart tightened as if seized by an invisible hand. No words came. She could only hold Sydney a little closer. She could not imagine how she was meant to make up for the past or how she could ever atone for her failures as a mother.Sydney clearly felt Florence crying harder. There were no sobs, but the dampness spreading across her shoulder told the story. For no clear reason, an unspoken sadness rose in Sydney's own chest. When Julian came downstairs, this was the scene that greeted him. These two really were something. He walked over helplessly, patted Sydney on the head, and said, "Di

Sydney was full of questions, yet no new message came through for a long time. She got out of bed and was about to go downstairs to tell Julian when her phone rang again. Her entire body tensed. When she saw the caller ID, her racing heart gradually settled. She answered."Hello, Mr. Clifford.""Dr. Wilson." Jeremiah's voice carried its usual mild warmth. "Would you like me to arrange a car to pick you up for tomorrow evening's charity gala?"'The charity gala…' Sydney froze for a beat before it registered. The Huttons' charity gala was tomorrow night.Over the past two days, her thoughts had been consumed by Eliana. She had completely forgotten about it.As soon as she remembered, hesitation surfaced.Tomorrow morning, Ewan's analysis results would be released. After that, developing the antidote would become a race against time. No matter how important tomorrow night might be, it could not compare to Eliana's condition. As for those so-called biological parents she had yet t

Marcus waited quietly to the side, listening for Alan's diagnosis.Alan tucked Eliana's hand back beneath the blanket. "It matches your judgment almost exactly. A compound poison like this is extremely complex. Part of the toxin in Eliana's body has not fully taken effect yet."At this stage, if she takes an antidote that is not perfectly matched, it could instead accelerate the remaining toxin."The words made Sydney's chest sink even further. She sat in silence for a long moment. This was all because of her.Alan knew her too well to miss the turn of her thoughts. "Enough. I'm back now. Marc will stay and help. You and Julian go home and rest properly for a day."More persuasion would only waste time. Sending her home was the better choice."I want to stay here with Eliana," Sydney said."When I tell you to go back, you go back." Alan did not argue. He reached out and checked her pulse, his expression uncharacteristically severe. "I noticed earlier that your complexion was o
