LOGINChapter 2
Adola Six years later …. I didn’t know how much influence I had until I stepped out stylishly out of my Rolls Royce with flashlights from various cameras beaming at me in full glare. Microphones were stretched toward me by journalists desperately wanting to have as little as a glance from me. Being superficial wasn’t my nature, but six years ago, I was evicted from my adoptive mother’s house, my adoptive sister was kidnapped, and the man whom I loved so much cheated on me after leaving his seed in my womb. I’d been very certain that my life was over back then, but my present reality just proved that it wasn’t. If anything, I was just getting started. The bouncers at the front steered them off, making room for me to step into the hall where the fundraiser event would be taking place. The hall was bathed with the warm, golden hue of the chandeliers hung high on the ceilings; housing philanthropists, politicians, wealthy business people and individuals from all walks of life who wanted to be a part of a noble cause for financing treatments for sickle cell and leukemia patients. Right after I was ushered in, the event began. The host climbed onto the platform, welcoming us cheerfully to the event. “It’s no secret that you’re all busy people, but you made time out of your busy schedule to be a part of this auspicious night for which we are grateful for,” When she paused, the air buzzed with applause. She continued almost immediately. “Without further ado, we’d like to kick off this event straight away. There are important items that would be up for the bid…” she went on to explain the terms and rules of the auction and when she was sure that everyone had settled in, the auctioneer took over. I shifted comfortably on my chair. This was my second auction ever, and it definitely wasn’t going to be my last. I had a thriving business with an inheritance hanging over my head. Being able to rise from the ashes spurred me to join meaningful projects like this. We were all handed little placards that would be raised when we wanted to bid, and when the first item was put up for auction, I signaled to them with the placard and made my bid. Another man bidded with a higher amount, the cycle going on and on until the limit was reached. The second item was put up on the screen. A package for couples who'd like to go on a unique adventure. I held back since I was single and had no one to go with. But while listening to the others wrestling for a chance to get the bid, a deep familiar baritone voice reverberated through the microphone, drawing out cold chills from my skin. I held my breath, shutting my eyes momentarily to let the voice echo in my ears, and when he spoke again, I confirmed that it was indeed him. Zyair Henderson. I sucked in air, my heart thumping very hard against my ribcage. What on God's green earth was he doing here? Why was fate this brutal? I'd spoken at the first bid, so there was no chance in hell that he hadn't heard my voice. Worst still, he got the package with the highest amount no one could match. What was I going to do if he walked up to me and tried to talk? I thought that I was over him. Maybe I was, but hearing him speak again after so many years and realizing that we were in the same gathering ignited mixed feelings in me that had been buried for a long time. “Since Mr Zyair Henderson has won the bid for this round, he'll be given the chance to choose whoever he wants to go on the hot air balloon ride with,” the auctioneer announced. My body went taut with anticipation, the persistent urge for me to leave gnawing in my chest. I was just about to give in when he stopped right in front of me. "It's a pleasure to meet you again, Ms Bradford," He said, his hand stretched in front of me. Mustering courage, I swiveled my gaze at him, tension sweeping through the silence as I reached out for the handshake. His lips were pursed, his dark orbs peering straight into my soul. Though I was quite shaken, I'd not let him see that. "Yeah, it's good to see you too," my tone was curt just the way I wanted, but my heart was on the brink of melting. He brought my palm to his lips and kissed it, turning to the crowd after helping me to my feet. “I choose her,” he declared, a loud ovation following. My jaw dropped in shock and when I recovered, a wave of anger washed over me. “What the hell are you doing, Zyair? Couldn't you have chosen anyone else?” I fumed, but his smug grin showed how much fun he was having with this. “It's my choice, darling. I don't have to explain anything to you,” he replied nonchalantly. I shook my head, a distasteful look smeared on my expression. “I'm not going anywhere with you,” I said firmly. He shrugged. "Oh, but you will or do you want everyone to suspect that we have a history? Besides, I didn't expect to see you here after you..." "Disappeared?" I finished for him. His brows knitted in a fierce knot, a tight smile fixed on his face. "You ran away after taking money from my mother just like other girls out there would do. It's not my fault that..." "You don't know shit about what your mother did to me,” I cut in. “But I won't bother explaining. You definitely had the time of your life playing games with me," "Don't you dare play the victim card with me," His eyes became darker, the fake smile faltering into a sneer. I sucked my teeth, ready to give him a piece of my mind when my phone rang, Jeanette’s name appearing on the screen. I turned away immediately, intending to keep the kids a secret from him. He had no place in our lives after everything he and his family had done to me. "Hi, Jeanette. How are the kids?" I asked as quietly as I could, veering hurriedly toward the exit. "Keeya caught a fever and slumped. I don't know what to do," her voice trembled with worry and fear. "What? How? I'm on my way. Take her to the hospital right now," I demanded, ending the call and fumbling with my purse for my car keys. Footsteps crunched behind me, my name resonating smoothly from his lips, causing me to halt temporarily on my steps. I ignored him, pulling the car door open but he was quick to grab my wrist, preventing me from taking any further steps. "What do you want?" I growled, yanking my hand off his grip. Curiosity radiated in harsh waves from him while he advanced toward me, his tall frame hovering over me. I was backed against the car. Taking a deep breath, he asked with a kind of calmness that unnerved me. "I heard everything you said so don't think of lying to me, Adola. Do we have a child together?"Chapter 10AdolaThe bus taking us to the estate we were going to survey was nearly full, which I was grateful for because it meant that Zyair wouldn’t be joining us.“Is everyone in?” Mr Lloyd asked, standing close to the door.“Yes,” someone answered from behind.Mr Lloyd turned to shut the door, but a guy stepped in. “What’s the matter, Andrew? We’re about to leave,”“We can’t. Mr Henderson is joining us,” he announced and cold sweats broke out in my palm.I dug my teeth into my lower lip, nearly drawing out blood. I hated that the mention of his name had the power to change my mood from sweet to sour in a matter of seconds. It was very obvious that he was joining us to make me uncomfortable, and it was only the beginning. I wished we wouldn’t have to ride on that stupid hot air balloon. If only someone wealthier than him had won the bid for the hot air balloon that night, I wouldn’t be experiencing this much tension. His arrogant self showed up almost immediately, well-built body
Chapter 9Zyair“Adola is back? She shouldn’t be back..” she roared then snapped her lips shut, pacing furiously.Something was obviously fishy but I couldn’t tell what it was. I was aware of my mother’s hatred for Adola, but it sounded like she’d go the extra mile to eliminate Adola from the surface of the earth. “Why can’t she be back?” I questioned, standing up as well.Lorna attempted holding my hand, but I moved away from her. She was the reason for this upheaval.“Because she’s a slut that will only make your life a living hell again. Have you forgotten what she did to you? She took money from me and ran away after sleeping with her boss at the club. There’s no reason for her to have anything to do with you in your life,” she ranted while father devoured his meal.As usual, he was nonchalant about the situation. This was why I never honoured the family dinner because of how it usually ended.“Mom, I know you’re concerned about me, but needn’t I remind you that I’m 32 years old
Chapter 8ZyairThe daze cleared off my eyes instantly as I cleared my throat. “Tell her that I'll be with her shortly,”“Wouldn't it be fun to let your fiancée know that her wonderful fiancé nearly kissed his ex?” She teased, her smirk filled with mischief. I grabbed her neck, pinning her again against the wall. My grip was loose but strong enough to keep her rooted where I wanted. “I wasn't trying to do that,” I'd be damned if I didn't want to have a taste of her lips again, and that was what riled me up: the fact that my body was yet to forget that she was no longer mine.“And now?” she seemed too comfortable. I let go of her. “I'm sorry for acting inappropriately with you. You can leave now,”She said nothing else and walked away, leaving me with the realization that I was fucked. I adjusted my tie and veered toward my office. Lorna's gaze was steered away from her phone to me the moment I stepped in. “Hi, baby,” she wrapped her arms around me. I kissed her lightly on the fo
Chapter 7Adola My heart slammed against my ribcage while I wondered what could be his condition. “We are very capable of fulfilling whatever your terms and conditions, sir,” I assured him confidently. He folded his arms, nodding slowly. “I want to be involved in everything that concerns this project, from the demolition to the restructuring to rentals. I'll be involved in every step of the way,” he said in a way that showed he wasn't joking. This was a first. I understood that most investors liked to be carried along in huge projects like this, but he made it seem as if he was going to teach me my job.The only reason I wasn't refusing was because I cared about my business. Several times, grandma has asked me to come work for her, but I wasn't ready. I wanted to build something of my own that no one would be able to take away from me. So even if people like him decided to be a thorn in my flesh, I'd still stand tall. “There's no problem with that. We'll do everything the way yo
Chapter 6AdolaThe pitch day turned out the exact way I imagined. Golden streaks of the sun enamored the clear blue sky.Stepping out of my car with my Alison, I tried to familiarize myself with the busy terrain of New York city: the endless hustle and bustle, urgent steps of employees trying to catch the next bus or cab that would take them to their place of employment added to my thrill. Pride and excellence hung like an invisible clock on the artistic painted walls. Trois wasn't just an investment company, it was an organization anybody would be proud to work with.Trent Llyod, the managing director, was waiting for me in the lobby. His smile widened as he stretched his hand."Ms Bradford. It's good to have you here. You're welcome to Trois investment company," He said warmly.I shook his hand firmly, returning the smile. "Thank you for having me."He extended his greetings to Alison who was beside me and then we headed to the elevator."Ordinarily, this meeting should be a mere
Chapter 5ZyairI uncurled my body from her, my eyes taking in the soft rays of sun that bounced into the room through the floor-to-ceiling window. Upon glancing at my side to catch a glimpse of the peaceful view of my sleeping fiancee, I slowly rose to my feet. Quickly, I covered my body with a robe, shut the door behind me and knocked on Adola’s door. Once… twice, my knuckles connected with the sturdy wooden door, but there was no response. She could be asleep or awake, trying to get a rise from me. After all, she wasn't the weak woman I knew her to be. She was tougher now, and more assertive. I liked her that way, but that aside, I had to be sure that my guest was still alive. “Adola?” I knocked again, this time more vehemently. “If you don't respond, I'll have to let myself in,” I warned, getting exhausted with the hide and seek, but silence was all I got. Pursing my lips, my grip tightened on the knob, twisting it open to reveal an empty room. Where could she have gone? The t
