Chapter 5

?

The next day, Aiden brought me to a ballroom that had been transformed into a sea of pink roses.

"The wedding planner wants to run through the entire ceremony in advance," he explained. "That way, everything will be ready when you wake up again."

By then, I had to lean against him to keep my balance.

Aiden held my hand as he led me through the rehearsal.

I stood where the wedding planner told me, smiled for the photographer, and raised no objections. I simply lowered my head and read from the cue card.

“For richer or poorer, I, Kira Blackwood, promise to... Kira?”

I stopped.

The wedding planner froze as well.

“Isn’t the bride Roxy Blackwood? Why does the cue card say Kira?”

An assistant rushed over and took the card from my hand.

“I’m so sorry. This must be an earlier version printed by mistake.”

I looked up at Aiden.

For one brief instant, naked panic crossed his face.

Ever since I overheard him talking to my father that day, I’d known he planned to give Kira a wedding. But even then, I never imagined he’d have the nerve to use me as Kira’s stand-in at her own wedding rehearsal.

I swallowed back the pain threatening to break me and tilted my head as though I understood nothing.

He quickly regained his composure and tightened his hand around mine.

“The wedding team mixed up your information. I’ll deal with it.”

I let him believe I trusted him.

“All right.”

My easy answer unsettled him more than anger would have.

“Roxy, when you wake up again, I’ll make up for all eighteen postponements. We’ll have the life you’ve always wanted.”

I smiled at him.

It was the first genuine smile I had given him in days.

Yet Aiden’s expression tightened for reasons even he could not explain.

Halfway through the rehearsal, the lighting rig overhead began to shake.

Someone screamed.

The rig broke loose and fell straight toward Aiden.

I did not think. I rushed forward and shoved him out of the way.

The lighting rig crashed to the floor less than three feet from us.

Aiden caught me around the waist and frantically checked my body.

“Are you hurt? Roxy, look at me.”

“I’m fine.”

My father rushed over and slapped me hard across the face.

“How could you be so careless with your body? Kira wakes tomorrow! Are you trying to make her suffer the consequences for you?”

The blow snapped my head to the side, leaving my ears ringing.

Aiden’s expression darkened at once. He steadied me and examined the mark on my face himself.

“Mr. Blackwood, you shouldn’t have hit her.”

“If you ever lay a hand on her again, the partnership between our families is over.”

His voice was ice-cold.

My traitorous heart still gave a small flutter.

My mother hurried over as well. After confirming I had no other injuries, she said, “You need to rest. The rehearsal is over.”

They took me to a suite upstairs and placed sleeping pills on the nightstand.

Pain had been tearing through my soul all day, each wave worse than the last. Ordinary painkillers no longer helped.

The specialist had told me sleep might spare me some of the suffering.

After my parents left the room, I stepped into the dark hallway to get a glass of water.

Their voices drifted from the sitting room around the corner.

Aiden lowered his voice.

“That slap was too hard. The mark may not fade by tomorrow. Kira will be upset when she wakes and sees it.”

So that was why he had stopped my father. He had not been protecting me at all. He was protecting the body Kira would wake up in tomorrow.

“That was my fault. I just lost my temper,” my father said. “But don’t you think Roxy’s reaction is a little strange? She’s never given in this easily before?”

Aiden hesitated for a moment.

“She’s probably only upset because the wrong name was read during the wedding rehearsal. When she wakes again, I’ll give her another wedding.”

“She loves me. I’ll win her over.”

There was not a trace of doubt in his voice.

I returned to the bedroom before they could find me.

They still mistook my silence for trust. They still believed there would be another fall, another winter, and endless chances to soothe my hurt with gifts and promises.

Even drawing breath took effort. My soul was already disappearing, and I could no longer endure the pain.

I did not know how much time had passed.

Aiden entered in his wedding suit, as handsome and gentle as ever.

Just as he had before, he sat beside me and pressed a tender kiss to my forehead.

“Roxy, when you wake up, I’ll give you another wedding.”

“You can choose the dress and the ring—whatever you like.”

A tear slipped silently from the corner of my eye.

No.

I would never wake up again.

Aiden caught my collapsing body.“You said we could choose who came back,” he roared at Dr. Rowan. “I chose Roxy. Why can’t she stay?”Dr. Rowan shook his head.“Her soul was already too weak. This transfer gave her only enough strength to say what she needed to say. She has no power left to remain inside the body.”“No,” Aiden rasped. “Do it again.”“Even if I force her back, she will disappear again within moments.”The body in Aiden’s arms opened its eyes.Kira sat up, holding her head.“Why am I still here?”Dr. Rowan looked away.“From now on, this body belongs only to you. Roxy will never return.”Kira’s eyes lit up.“Really?”She could not hide the delight spreading across her face.“I always said this body should have belonged to me.”She started to rise, but Aiden seized her by the throat.“Give Roxy back to me.”His eyes were bloodshot, his expression completely unhinged.“Give me back my wife.”Kira struggled until my parents rushed forward and dragged Aiden away.“Roxy is a

Dr. Rowan looked at them gravely.“Are you certain?”“Yes,” Aiden answered without hesitation. “I want Roxy back. She’s the only one I want.”My parents nodded as well.“We choose Roxy too. She is our most sensible and accomplished daughter.”Kira stood between the security guards, glaring at them with hatred.Dr. Rowan did not begin at once. He raised his eyes toward the empty space where my soul lingered.“Roxy, do you want to come back?”Everyone froze.Aiden looked up sharply, hope and terror flooding his eyes at once.“Roxy, are you really here?”“Come home with me. Please. We can start over.”I did not answer.Dr. Rowan sighed.“There are things she needs to say herself.”The transfer began.A tremendous force seized my soul. Darkness swallowed me, and a moment later, I felt solid ground beneath my feet again.I opened my eyes.Aiden and my parents rushed toward me.“Roxy?”“Sweetheart, is it really you?”“It’s me.”Tears fell from Aiden’s eyes. He pulled me into his arms, and th

One week later, Aiden returned to my parents’ house. He had lost a great deal of weight, and his eyes were webbed with red.“If you agree to the soul transfer, I’ll give you fifty million dollars and five percent of Hartwell Group.”Kira overheard from outside the door and stormed into the study.“Why are you doing this to me? You already had a wedding with me. Wasn’t I the one you loved?”Aiden pulled his arm from her grasp.“I never loved you.”“I promised you a wedding because I believed you had saved my life. But do you know what I found out?”Kira went still.“You can’t swim.”A few days earlier, Aiden had returned to my university to search for traces of me.The swim coach recognized me from a photograph.“She was strange,” the coach said. “Every spring and summer, she refused to go near the pool. The moment fall arrived, she signed up for cold-water training.”“We told her it would be easier to learn once the weather warmed up, but she always said she wouldn’t be here then.”At

Roxy’s POVAfter Aiden and I started dating, he often felt sorry that I could wake only in fall and winter.Once, he held my hand and said, “After we marry, I’ll take you to every warm place in the world. I’ll make up for every spring and summer you missed.”I shook my head, my eyes red.“It’s all right. As long as you’re with me, every season feels like spring.”For a long time, we truly had been that happy.Aiden often worked late into the night. No matter how late he came home, a hot meal was always waiting for him.The one time he casually mentioned a stomachache, I asked his doctor how to care for him, memorized every soothing soup recipe, prepared warm water, and held a heated towel against his abdomen. When his car broke down, I rushed out to get him so quickly that I put on mismatched socks. By the time I arrived, my nose was red from the cold, yet the only thing I asked was, “Aiden, are you all right?”Now, standing in the snow, Aiden seemed to see me running toward him from t

Aiden’s POVThe second time Kira woke during what should have been Roxy’s half of the year, Aiden dragged her out of bed.“You’re coming to the clinic with me.”Kira stared at him in disbelief.“Why are you treating me like this?”“Because Roxy disappeared, and you’re still occupying the body that should have let her return.”Their parents hurried between them.“Kira didn’t arrange those accidents,” their mother said. “You did.”“Why should she be the one to disappear?”Aiden went deathly pale. She was right. He had known Kira plagiarized the thesis, yet sent Roxy to face Emily. He had known every accident would hurt Roxy, yet planned them himself. As long as he left Roxy the marriage and the title of Mrs. Hartwell, he believed she should accept every other humiliation.Kira hid behind her parents and began to cry.“Wouldn’t it be better if Roxy never came back? I was always the daughter you loved more anyway.”She could not hide the delight beneath her tears. From now on, the body bel

Roxy’s POVMy soul followed them into Dr. Rowan’s office.Aiden spoke first.“You said those accidents wouldn’t kill her. Why hasn’t Roxy come back?”My mother clenched her hands.“Spring and summer belong to Kira. Fall and winter belong to Roxy. Fall is almost over. Why hasn’t she woken up?”They looked so anxious, as though they truly cared about me.I felt nothing.Dr. Rowan’s expression changed at once.“You asked whether each injury would kill the body. You never asked what repeated trauma would do to the soul controlling it.”“Broken bones heal. Blood loss can be treated. The body can recover after nearly drowning. A soul is different. Every time Roxy was pushed to the edge of death, her connection to this body weakened.”The blood drained from Aiden’s face.My mother gripped the edge of her chair.“What do you mean?”“Three days before the changeover, Roxy came to see me alone. The bond between her soul and the body had already been destroyed.”Aiden stopped breathing.“She came
