Chapter 1

I heard my father sigh inside the study.“If Kira is the one you want, then tell Roxy. You don’t have to keep doing this.”Aiden shook his head.“Kira is wonderful. She’s bright, full of life, and she nearly died saving me. But the Hartwell Group needs a steady, levelheaded woman at my side, and Roxy is perfect for that. Besides, they share one body. I won’t abandon either of them.”“Those eighteen accidents were the only way to keep postponing the wedding until Kira woke. A wedding and my heart are all I can give her.”His heart? The words cut straight through me.Everything I had endured over the past six months had been part of Aiden’s plan to give my sister a wedding. The first time, the brakes on my car had failed. Another time, I had fallen from a yacht and nearly drowned. Aiden had known exactly where I would be before every accident. Afterward, he had always been the first to find me, carry me into the hospital, and sit beside my bed promising me another wedding. My parents had

?When I finally regained consciousness the following morning, my bed was surrounded by people. As I came to, I could feel that my soul had weakened further, its hold on this body more fragile than before. My mother leaned over me and asked carefully, “Is it Kira?”“It's me,” I said.A flicker of disappointment crossed my parents' faces before they could hide it.I tried to sit up, but my arms trembled and gave way. Aiden caught me before I fell back against the pillows.Once Aiden was certain I was out of danger, his brow furrowed.“You know you’re allergic to chestnuts. Why didn’t you check before you ate them?”My mother stepped between us.“She just woke up. Leave her alone.”Then she took my hand, fear still clear in her eyes.“How could you be so careless with yourself? Kira will be waking up soon—” She stopped abruptly and covered his mouth.Once, I would have asked why Kira’s name was always the first one she called. Now I merely squeezed her hand.“I’m sorry, Mom.”My parents

Aiden took me back to the hospital and booked the best private room available. He gently stroked my cheek, his voice full of concern.“I haven’t forgotten what you endured today. Kira went too far this time. You never should have had to face the consequences for her.”“When you wake again, I’ll take you to the Maldives and give you another wedding. The northern lights, swimming with dolphins—wherever you want to go, I’ll take you.”Before I heard the truth, his promises would have moved me. Now I only murmured a faint acknowledgment and turned my face away.Aiden kept talking for a long time. When I gave him no response, he finally fell silent. He was in no hurry. In his mind, we would marry sooner or later, and I would always be the wife he had chosen. He could take his time winning me over again. He stayed beside my bed. When I felt dizzy, he helped me walk. He personally brought every meal, and the moment I frowned, he called for a doctor. He helped me to the bathroom, cooked soup f

?The bridal boutique was filled with pink roses. Every wedding dress prepared for me was pink as well.My mother draped a shawl over my shoulders. She hesitated, then gestured toward the row of dresses."Custom gowns take months to make," she said carefully. "Why don’t you try them on today and see which one suits you best? Then everything will be ready for the wedding when you wake up again."My father nodded as well. "That’s right. You’re only trying them on."They said I was only choosing a design for the custom gown I would wear at my next wedding, yet every sample dress was in Kira’s favorite color.I knew they had only brought me here to try on Kira’s wedding dress in her place.“All right. I’ll try one.”My mother’s smile became a little more natural, and the tension in my father’s expression eased.Aiden looked pleased as well, as if my ready agreement proved I had finally learned to be sensible.“Roxy,” he said, “if you hate pink, you don’t have to force yourself.”I met his

?The next day, Aiden brought me to a ballroom that had been transformed into a sea of pink roses."The wedding planner wants to run through the entire ceremony in advance," he explained. "That way, everything will be ready when you wake up again."By then, I had to lean against him to keep my balance.Aiden held my hand as he led me through the rehearsal.I stood where the wedding planner told me, smiled for the photographer, and raised no objections. I simply lowered my head and read from the cue card.“For richer or poorer, I, Kira Blackwood, promise to... Kira?”I stopped. The wedding planner froze as well.“Isn’t the bride Roxy Blackwood? Why does the cue card say Kira?”An assistant rushed over and took the card from my hand.“I’m so sorry. This must be an earlier version printed by mistake.”I looked up at Aiden. For one brief instant, naked panic crossed his face.Ever since I overheard him talking to my father that day, I’d known he planned to give Kira a wedding. But even the

Aiden’s POVOnce Roxy slipped fully into unconsciousness, she felt herself drifting weightlessly above the room.Only one soul remained inside the sleeping body now—Kira’s.Morning sunlight spilled through the windows. Their parents waited beside the bed while Aiden held the custom-made pink ring, anticipation bright in his eyes. The moment Kira opened her eyes, pain tore through her face and the rest of her body. She covered her cheek as tears streamed down her face.“Mom, Dad, Aiden, it hurts! Why would Roxy do this to me?”All three of them rushed to comfort her.Their father called the doctor. Their mother brought painkillers and sweets. Aiden crouched beside the bed and gently stroked her hair.“I’m sorry. Roxy almost had another accident during the rehearsal, but I checked. She wasn’t badly injured.”Kira’s eyes filled with tears.“She knew I was waking today. Couldn’t she have been more careful?”No one defended Roxy.Aiden merely softened his voice.“The wedding will cheer you

Aiden’s face went rigid.“Why are you still here?”Their parents stared at Kira as their confusion slowly turned to fear.“Where is Roxy?” their mother asked.Kira’s eyes reddened.“Aren’t you happy to see me? Maybe Roxy doesn’t want to come back. Maybe she’s angry that I got the wedding.”Their father frowned.“Don’t be ridiculous. Spring and summer belong to you. Fall and winter belong to Roxy. That’s how it has always worked.”Their mother nodded. “We have never favored either one of you.”Roxy’s soul floated overhead, and she almost laughed. They truly believed that. The moment Kira began to cry, all three of them rushed to comfort her. No one asked about Roxy again that day.Three months passed. It was the first winter without Roxy. Her mother was the first to feel her absence.Every fall, Roxy arranged her physicals, repaired anything broken in the house, figured out how every new appliance worked, and remembered which medicine she needed to take with dinner.Kira knew none of it

Roxy’s POVMy soul followed them into Dr. Rowan’s office.Aiden spoke first.“You said those accidents wouldn’t kill her. Why hasn’t Roxy come back?”My mother clenched her hands.“Spring and summer belong to Kira. Fall and winter belong to Roxy. Fall is almost over. Why hasn’t she woken up?”They looked so anxious, as though they truly cared about me.I felt nothing.Dr. Rowan’s expression changed at once.“You asked whether each injury would kill the body. You never asked what repeated trauma would do to the soul controlling it.”“Broken bones heal. Blood loss can be treated. The body can recover after nearly drowning. A soul is different. Every time Roxy was pushed to the edge of death, her connection to this body weakened.”The blood drained from Aiden’s face.My mother gripped the edge of her chair.“What do you mean?”“Three days before the changeover, Roxy came to see me alone. The bond between her soul and the body had already been destroyed.”Aiden stopped breathing.“She came

Aiden’s POVThe second time Kira woke during what should have been Roxy’s half of the year, Aiden dragged her out of bed.“You’re coming to the clinic with me.”Kira stared at him in disbelief.“Why are you treating me like this?”“Because Roxy disappeared, and you’re still occupying the body that should have let her return.”Their parents hurried between them.“Kira didn’t arrange those accidents,” their mother said. “You did.”“Why should she be the one to disappear?”Aiden went deathly pale. She was right. He had known Kira plagiarized the thesis, yet sent Roxy to face Emily. He had known every accident would hurt Roxy, yet planned them himself. As long as he left Roxy the marriage and the title of Mrs. Hartwell, he believed she should accept every other humiliation.Kira hid behind her parents and began to cry.“Wouldn’t it be better if Roxy never came back? I was always the daughter you loved more anyway.”She could not hide the delight beneath her tears. From now on, the body bel

Roxy’s POVAfter Aiden and I started dating, he often felt sorry that I could wake only in fall and winter.Once, he held my hand and said, “After we marry, I’ll take you to every warm place in the world. I’ll make up for every spring and summer you missed.”I shook my head, my eyes red.“It’s all right. As long as you’re with me, every season feels like spring.”For a long time, we truly had been that happy.Aiden often worked late into the night. No matter how late he came home, a hot meal was always waiting for him.The one time he casually mentioned a stomachache, I asked his doctor how to care for him, memorized every soothing soup recipe, prepared warm water, and held a heated towel against his abdomen. When his car broke down, I rushed out to get him so quickly that I put on mismatched socks. By the time I arrived, my nose was red from the cold, yet the only thing I asked was, “Aiden, are you all right?”Now, standing in the snow, Aiden seemed to see me running toward him from t
