Chapter 3

Author: Little Grass
"Manager Holt, look carefully.

"Don't let someone talk you in circles. If you say the wrong thing, it may be very hard to take back later."

I trembled with anger. "Lydia! What do you mean by that?"

Unexpectedly, Manager Holt reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. He jerked back and waved his hands again and again.

"Fake! It's fake!

"That personal seal looks fake too. It doesn't look real at all!"

I stared at him in disbelief.

"That's not what you said just now!"

As if angered by my question, he suddenly raised his voice and scolded me sharply.

"Who knows where you got this garbage contract and seal?

"I know nothing! Don't ask me!"

After saying that, he pushed through the crowd and fled in a panic, terrified of being dragged down with me.

Ryan hypocritically placed a hand on Lydia's shoulder and pretended to be the good guy.

"Forget it, Lydia. Connor was probably just confused for a moment. You really never know what's inside a person."

The surrounding colleagues immediately chimed in, pointing at me.

"Exactly. That's terrifying. He threw away his dignity just to take advantage."

"He usually looks so honest. I didn't expect him to be like this."

Lydia folded her arms, lifted her chin, and looked at me with contempt.

"What else do you have to say? Who else do you want to drag in to lie for you?

"If the chairman really rewarded you with a villa, why didn't he mention it at yesterday's company-wide meeting? That would've been the perfect chance to honor you."

I opened my mouth, wanting to explain.

I wanted to say that it was because I wanted to get the deed first, then propose to her in that sky penthouse overlooking the entire city.

I wanted to give her that home as our wedding gift.

But when the words reached my lips and I looked at her cold face, I could not say a single word.

She did not believe me at all.

In her mind, anything I said was an excuse, the dying struggle of someone whose lie had been exposed.

My silence, to her, became admission.

"Connor, given that you attempted to misappropriate company property and repeatedly argued without remorse,

"I have decided to suspend you for one month to reflect."

I let out a cold laugh.

"No need. I quit."

Her brows knitted, but she still wore that superior expression.

"I'm giving you a way down. Don't threaten me with resignation."

Ryan immediately joined in from the side.

"Lydia, you're too kind.

"If I had a girlfriend who cared for me like that, I'd be the happiest man alive."

As he spoke, he naturally took Lydia's hand.

And Lydia did not pull away.

In that moment, the last shred of hope I had for her completely died.

Ryan had only been here for a week, but Lydia mentioned him almost every day.

She praised him for being young and promising, for being sweet-talking and clever.

Looking at their joined hands, I suddenly laughed.

What else did I need to understand?

"Then you can have him."

I looked at Lydia and said, word by word, "Lydia, we're done."

She seemed stunned for a second and wanted to say something.

But I no longer wanted to hear a single word. I turned and left.

The moment I returned to the apartment Lydia and I rented together, my phone notified me that my resignation process had been completed.

The next second, Lydia kicked me out of the company group chat.

Ryan sent me a message.

It was a photo of him and Lydia on the sales office couch, posed so intimately it made the meaning unmistakable.

"Craving something fresh tonight. Might start with your girlfriend."

"Heard you never even slept with her. What a loser."

My stomach churned with disgust.

Lydia's messages followed right after.

"Fine, break up then. Don't come crawling back to me!"

"Being with a spineless loser with trash character like you is humiliating."

"Ryan's different. His family owns two houses in Northbridge, and he's ambitious."

"It was all Lydia! She told me to do it!"She said Connor stole her spotlight and that she'd hated him for ages! She said if I burned the contract, the chairman would definitely fire him!"I was tricked by her! I didn't know anything!"Lydia probably never expected that the man who kept saying he loved her would sell her out the moment he turned around. She pounced on him like a madwoman, clawing at Ryan's face. The two of them fought right in front of the lawyers. They cursed each other, and the scene was ugly beyond words. The final judgment was enormous compensation and prison time.Lydia completely broke down.Through her lawyer, she desperately tried to see me.When my assistant relayed her words, his expression was very strange."Mr. Bryce, Ms. Cross says... she says she's your fiancee."She believes you still have feelings for her. She says if you say the word, you can definitely get her out."After everything had reached this point, she still thought I would help he

A cool and familiar female voice came from behind us.At some point, my sister had walked over. She wore a sharp professional skirt suit, her presence fully unleashed. She came to my side and gave me a reproachful look."Why aren't you going in? What are you doing out here in the wind? Aren't you cold?"Lydia's eyes locked onto my sister, then flicked back to me. She screeched."Connor! You! You actually betrayed me! You sold your body for orders!"Ryan spoke in a strange, sarcastic tone as if he had suddenly understood everything."No wonder you could sign so many major deals at once and beat every one of us."Heh, Connor, I didn't expect you to be this disgusting."Their thought process nearly made me laugh from anger. My sister's face turned cold. She spoke lightly to Chairman Wallace."Chairman Wallace, your subordinates don't seem very bright."The chairman was not stupid. His gaze moved between my sister's features and mine, and he immediately put on a nearly fawning

"Did you prepare the gift? If young Mr. Bryce refuses to forgive you later, you will kneel until he does. Do you hear me?"Ryan also came over, his face full of resentment as he sighed."Honestly, Connor, you really are something. The contract wasn't even signed yet, and you caused trouble. Now the company is humiliated."These two shifted blame with impressive speed and fluency. The chairman had always valued talent.Although the situation was urgent, he still forced a kind expression onto his face."Connor, you know I value you."As long as this contract can be renewed, the villa I promised you still stands."Do your best. Don't disappoint me."I waved a hand and gave a mocking laugh. "Please don't. Chairman, I wouldn't dare accept it."My gaze swept over the guilty faces of Lydia and Ryan."I'd hate for someone to say I was dreaming again."The chairman frowned, obviously not understanding what I meant."What nonsense is that? When I, Wallace, give my word, do you think

After the secretary ended the call, her expression became even stranger. She leaned close to the chairman and whispered,"Chairman, I asked someone at Bryce Group for some information..."Apparently, young Mr. Bryce returned today."He was at our sales office this afternoon, and it seems he left on bad terms."Young Mr. Bryce?Lydia's heart lurched when she heard those words. She suddenly remembered the phone call I had taken. The one where I had called someone "Victoria"...Impossible. Absolutely impossible.Lydia's heart screamed wildly. How could Connor Bryce be the young master of Bryce Group? They had been together for three years. His food and clothes had been as ordinary as could be.He had squeezed with her into that old two-bedroom apartment downtown. It had to be a coincidence.Ryan's eyes darted, and he immediately tried to smear me."Chairman, look, doesn't that line up perfectly?"Young Mr. Bryce must have happened to see Connor faking things today."That's

Lydia's furious voice stabbed through the phone like a knife.I spoke slowly. "Manager Cross, did you forget?"Trash like me with ruined character would only affect the company's culture. I think it's better if I don't appear in front of you."I threw her exact words from the group chat back at her.She paused for several seconds before screaming."Cut the crap! The chairman wants to see you! Get back here now!"I heard the anxiety beneath her impatience and could not help laughing softly."What right do you have to order me around?"After that, I hung up and blocked her.The world finally went quiet. But that quiet did not last long. New unknown numbers began bombarding me in turns. When the ninety-ninth call came in, I finally answered in irritation. On the other end was Lydia, her voice choked with tears."Connor, please just come here, okay? I'm begging you."That faint crying softened my heart for a moment. No matter what, I had loved her for years.Just as I was a

I put down my phone, opened the closet, and started packing my luggage.I had no intention of seeing Lydia again. I only hoped she would not regret this.On the way back home, my phone kept buzzing. When I opened the screen, it was full of screenshots from colleagues and people in the industry. The contents were all more or less the same. Lydia had posted announcements in various groups."Former colleague Connor Bryce was fired for moral misconduct and for forging a contract in an attempt to misappropriate company property.""This person is stubborn, dishonest, and full of lies. HR contacts, please beware."She was afraid I could still find a job.She even posted the same message in the group for my previous company, attaching a large cash reward and asking HR contacts to spread my "glorious deeds" to everyone they knew so no one would hire me.She wanted to cut off every path I had.I leaned against the cold taxi window, and my heart slowly turned just as cold.Back then, s
