Chapter 4

Author: Little Grass
I put down my phone, opened the closet, and started packing my luggage.

I had no intention of seeing Lydia again. I only hoped she would not regret this.

On the way back home, my phone kept buzzing.

When I opened the screen, it was full of screenshots from colleagues and people in the industry.

The contents were all more or less the same. Lydia had posted announcements in various groups.

"Former colleague Connor Bryce was fired for moral misconduct and for forging a contract in an attempt to misappropriate company property."

"This person is stubborn, dishonest, and full of lies. HR contacts, please beware."

She was afraid I could still find a job.

She even posted the same message in the group for my previous company, attaching a large cash reward and asking HR contacts to spread my "glorious deeds" to everyone they knew so no one would hire me.

She wanted to cut off every path I had.

I leaned against the cold taxi window, and my heart slowly turned just as cold.

Back then, she had a poor academic background and could not find work anywhere.

After she finally entered this company, I used my connections and asked countless friends to buy properties from her so I could help her hit her sales targets.

That was how she became sales manager.

She complained that my job required too many business trips and that we spent too little time together. She kept urging me to transfer to her company.

For her, I gave up my training at one of our family subsidiaries and came here.

Now, for a man she had only known for a week, she was trying to ruin me completely.

How laughable.

My phone rang abruptly, interrupting my thoughts.

I answered, and before I could speak, my sister's bright voice came through.

"What happened, my dear little brother? Did you fall out with your Cinderella?"

My sister had never liked Lydia. She thought Lydia was too calculating and did not deserve me.

A huge wave of grievance surged into my throat, and for a long time, I could not speak.

"Victoria..."

I only said one word, and my voice already broke.

She immediately sensed something was wrong. Her tone turned anxious at once.

"Oh no, don't be upset. Don't be upset. What happened?

"Who bullied you? Tell me. I'll get justice for you."

She paused, then lowered her voice. "The contracts for Eastbank haven't been signed yet. Don't worry."

I stayed silent, listening to her comfort me with heartache in her voice, and my eyes stung.

Our parents had been busy since we were children, and I had practically been raised by my sister.

After graduating from college, I left the family company entirely to her so I could stay with Lydia.

Yet she had never complained once.

"All right, all right. Men don't cry.

"Come home. If the sky falls, your sister will hold it up for you."

My nose stung again, and I nodded heavily.

After hanging up, I had just caught my breath when my screen lit up again.

Lydia had sent more than a dozen messages. They had started as questions, then turned into furious orders.

"Connor, answer me!"

"Come back to the company immediately! Right now!"

I switched my phone to silent.

Less than two minutes later, an unknown number called.

I frowned and answered. Ryan's hypocritical voice came through with a hint of accusation.

"Connor, why aren't you replying to Lydia? Are you guilty and afraid to face her?"

I snapped, "What the hell are you? What right do you have to question me?"

He instantly shifted into a hurt tone.

"It's fine if you snap at me, but don't delay Lydia's important business."

Before I could speak, the phone was snatched away by someone else.

"Connor!

"Why are you yelling at him? Are you insane? I told you to come back to the company. Did you hear me?"

A cool and familiar female voice came from behind us.At some point, my sister had walked over. She wore a sharp professional skirt suit, her presence fully unleashed. She came to my side and gave me a reproachful look."Why aren't you going in? What are you doing out here in the wind? Aren't you cold?"Lydia's eyes locked onto my sister, then flicked back to me. She screeched."Connor! You! You actually betrayed me! You sold your body for orders!"Ryan spoke in a strange, sarcastic tone as if he had suddenly understood everything."No wonder you could sign so many major deals at once and beat every one of us."Heh, Connor, I didn't expect you to be this disgusting."Their thought process nearly made me laugh from anger. My sister's face turned cold. She spoke lightly to Chairman Wallace."Chairman Wallace, your subordinates don't seem very bright."The chairman was not stupid. His gaze moved between my sister's features and mine, and he immediately put on a nearly fawning

"Did you prepare the gift? If young Mr. Bryce refuses to forgive you later, you will kneel until he does. Do you hear me?"Ryan also came over, his face full of resentment as he sighed."Honestly, Connor, you really are something. The contract wasn't even signed yet, and you caused trouble. Now the company is humiliated."These two shifted blame with impressive speed and fluency. The chairman had always valued talent.Although the situation was urgent, he still forced a kind expression onto his face."Connor, you know I value you."As long as this contract can be renewed, the villa I promised you still stands."Do your best. Don't disappoint me."I waved a hand and gave a mocking laugh. "Please don't. Chairman, I wouldn't dare accept it."My gaze swept over the guilty faces of Lydia and Ryan."I'd hate for someone to say I was dreaming again."The chairman frowned, obviously not understanding what I meant."What nonsense is that? When I, Wallace, give my word, do you think

After the secretary ended the call, her expression became even stranger. She leaned close to the chairman and whispered,"Chairman, I asked someone at Bryce Group for some information..."Apparently, young Mr. Bryce returned today."He was at our sales office this afternoon, and it seems he left on bad terms."Young Mr. Bryce?Lydia's heart lurched when she heard those words. She suddenly remembered the phone call I had taken. The one where I had called someone "Victoria"...Impossible. Absolutely impossible.Lydia's heart screamed wildly. How could Connor Bryce be the young master of Bryce Group? They had been together for three years. His food and clothes had been as ordinary as could be.He had squeezed with her into that old two-bedroom apartment downtown. It had to be a coincidence.Ryan's eyes darted, and he immediately tried to smear me."Chairman, look, doesn't that line up perfectly?"Young Mr. Bryce must have happened to see Connor faking things today."That's

Lydia's furious voice stabbed through the phone like a knife.I spoke slowly. "Manager Cross, did you forget?"Trash like me with ruined character would only affect the company's culture. I think it's better if I don't appear in front of you."I threw her exact words from the group chat back at her.She paused for several seconds before screaming."Cut the crap! The chairman wants to see you! Get back here now!"I heard the anxiety beneath her impatience and could not help laughing softly."What right do you have to order me around?"After that, I hung up and blocked her.The world finally went quiet. But that quiet did not last long. New unknown numbers began bombarding me in turns. When the ninety-ninth call came in, I finally answered in irritation. On the other end was Lydia, her voice choked with tears."Connor, please just come here, okay?
