Chapter 1

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
A grandmother and her grandson lived across the hall from me.

The old woman was notorious for taking anything she could get for free.

On the very first day after I moved in, several expensive delivery boxes I'd left outside my door disappeared.

I later spotted her at the recycling center downstairs.

She was happily counting the few dollars she'd earned by selling my boxes.

Whenever I ordered takeout and accidentally left an extra side dish hanging from the doorknob, it would end up in her stomach if I waited even one minute.

She even stole two air-freshener sachets from the cabinet by my front door.

I usually ignored it.

After all, she was raising her five-year-old grandson, Toby, alone.

Toby was painfully thin, and his clothes were always faded from too many washes.

Whenever he saw me, he timidly called me Ryan.

I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

Sometimes, when I bought cherries or premium grapes at the grocery store, I'd bring a box to their apartment.

When I went downstairs with my own trash and saw their leaking garbage bags in the hall, I carried those down too.

Then, a few days ago, everything changed.

Mrs. Doyle had been rushing down the stairs to grab an empty plastic bottle when she slipped and fell.

She broke her right leg and came home with a thick cast.

That evening, someone pounded on my door hard enough to shake the frame.

When I opened the door, Mrs. Doyle was waiting in a wheelchair.

She looked at me through tears, crying as though her life had ended.

"Mr. Barrymore, you've got to help an old woman!"

She clutched my sleeve as if she thought I might run away.

"My leg's broken. I can't move.

"My poor Toby's still at Greystone Preschool, and there's no one to collect him.

"My daughter's away earning a fortune. I promise we'll repay you properly.

"If you refuse, Toby will be left at preschool with nothing to eat."

The louder she cried, the more her voice carried through the entire hallway.

Looking at her miserable condition, I eventually softened.

I wasn't working at Barrymore Development for the moment, and my days were completely flexible.

Picking up the child seemed like a harmless favor.

"All right, Mrs. Doyle. Please calm down. I'll get Toby."

I agreed and collected her grandson that one time.

The next day, I went downstairs in slippers to retrieve a package from the lobby lockers.

Several older women with tightly curled hair were sitting together, gossiping over cups of coffee.

At the center of the group, surrounded like a celebrity, sat Mrs. Doyle in her wheelchair.

Her cast leg stuck straight out in front of her.

She was also eating the imported cherries I'd brought her the day before.

I started to take another route because I had no interest in dealing with neighborhood gossips.

Then I heard my name.

"Oh, you mean that young man on the seventh floor?"

Mrs. Doyle spat out a cherry pit, her face glowing with pride.

"That boy's completely obsessed with my Candace."

I stopped, and my brows drew together.

I'd barely seen her daughter. Obsessed with her?

Humiliation finally destroyed what remained of Candace's judgment. Her eyes reddened, and she surged from the floor like an enraged animal."You spoiled rich brat! I removed a flash drive from my pocket."Officer, this contains the complete recording from the camera outside my door."It clearly shows them attaching decorations without permission, pounding on the door, and threatening me."It also records every false statement they made about me."Is that enough to open a formal investigation?"The officer accepted the drive and nodded seriously. Then I took a large document envelope from the cabinet inside my entryway. My private attorneys had spent the previous night investigating Candace.I removed the papers. Then I read them aloud before every neighbor in the hallway."Candace Doyle, age thirty-five, currently unemployed."You owe more than one hundred thousand dollars through high-interest online loans, and every major credit account in your name has been closed."You've been hiding from collection agencies."The neighbors erupted."What? She's buried in debt?""Mrs. Doyle tells everyone her daughter's a successful executive.

The hallway remained deathly quiet.Everyone was stunned by Mr. Collins's sudden bow.Candace held her cheap cigarette in a hand that shook uncontrollably. She stammered, and even her voice seemed unsteady."M-Mr. Collins, what kind of joke is this?"Did you drink too much last night and mistake him for someone else?"He's only a poor tenant who came here looking for work!"He doesn't even own decent designer clothing!"The words nearly frightened Mr. Collins out of his mind.He was terrified that Candace's stupidity would destroy his career too.Mr. Collins spun around. He raised one hand and slapped Candace across the face with all his strength. The crack echoed through the hallway. The blow was so hard that Candace turned halfway around. One side of her face swelled immediately, and blood appeared at the corner of her mouth."Are you blind?"Mr. Collins cursed at Candace as though she were already dead."Who are you to shout orders in this building?"Don't call me

Police response still required time.Outside, Candace gradually lost patience when I continued refusing to appear. She assumed I was frightened and hiding like a coward. Her arrogance grew even worse."Fine! You refused the easy way, so you can have the hard way!"Candace kicked my door viciously."You think I can't do anything because you're hiding inside?"She pulled out her phone and dialed a number. Then she switched on the speaker and raised the volume so I could hear every word."Hey, Mr. Collins! It's Candace!"A slick-sounding man's voice came through the phone."Candace, what a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?"Candace glanced proudly at my door and raised her voice."Mr. Collins, how are you managing this building?"The male tenant across from my mother has been abusing her, and now he's hiding inside!"Send someone to shut off the power and water to Unit 701!"Let's see how long he lasts in there!"Mr. Collins agreed immediately."Easy enough.
