Chapter 3

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
"Go back and write a thorough statement of self-reflection," Tanner continued. "Make sure your tone is sincere, and admit that you fraudulently obtained financial aid."

I couldn't write that. Writing it would be admitting that I scammed the college out of financial aid, and that stain would follow me for the rest of my life!

"I won't write it," I said, refusing. "I didn't commit fraud!"

Brooke let out a soft sigh.

"Patty, I've always believed that it's not your fault for being poor. Everyone understands and sympathizes with the fact that your family needs assistance. But pretending to be poor to fraudulently claim government assistance when you're clearly not struggling? That's a question of character and basic integrity."

Our classmates immediately exploded with righteous indignation.

"Exactly! Why not give the grant to someone who actually needs it? Brooke's family is struggling this year, too!"

"Why should someone pretending to be broke take up a spot?"

"Give it up already. Stop taking advantage of everyone's sympathy!"

The repeated chants of "Give it to Brooke!" felt like harsh slaps across my face.

I looked at Brooke standing in the middle of the crowd, pretending to decline their support, and found the whole thing ridiculous.

She said her family was poor, yet I'd personally seen her buy designer cosmetics without even batting an eye. Now, she was backing me into a corner just to get her hands on the financial aid slot.

Tanner raised a hand to quiet the room. His expression was stern as he announced, "Based on the class' preliminary investigation, the allegations that Patty Thawne fraudulently obtained financial aid have been deemed true.

"Patty's financial aid eligibility for this academic year is hereby suspended, and any funds already disbursed must be fully repaid to the school's finance office within five days. Failure to do so will result in a direct entry on her permanent academic record, as well as a campus-wide disciplinary notice."

My parents had died when I was young, leaving my grandmother and me to depend on each other. Grandma's health was poor, and she relied on a constant supply of medication.

That financial aid was something we were counting on to get us through this year. It was the only thing keeping us afloat during these difficult days.

And now, all because of a terrible person's deliberate instigation, it was all gone.

Once the announcement was over, my classmates crowded around Brooke and began filing out of the room. As Chuck passed me, he deliberately turned sideways and slammed his shoulder hard into mine.

I stumbled backward and fell to the floor.

He looked down at me with contempt. "Out of the way, you fraud."

My eyes burned red. "You did that on purpose!"

But the crowd just burst out laughing as they continued to walk out.

Just then, my phone started vibrating in my pocket. It was Grandma calling.

I hurried to answer, doing my best to swallow my choked-back sobs and grievances, while pretending to sound as if nothing was wrong.

Grandma's elderly voice came through the phone.

"Sweetheart, one of your lecturers just called. They said you got into trouble and took money you shouldn't have from the college. Is that true?"

My heart clenched, and tears immediately spilled down my cheeks.

Grandma had lived her entire life honestly and humbly. Her biggest fear was that I would do something wrong out in the world and end up being judged by others.

"It's okay, sweetheart. Really, it's okay. If taking that money doesn't sit right with you, then let's just give it back. I'm still healthy enough to climb the mountain to dig for medicinal herbs or do odd jobs. We don't need to fight over that little bit of money from the college. We can live with a clear conscience…

"Don't make things difficult for the college, and don't let yourself suffer over this, either!"

Hearing those words, the dam holding back my built-up grief completely broke, and tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

With bloodshot eyes, I fought back a sob and protested, "No, Grandma! Absolutely not!"

How could I let Grandma, who was nearly 70 and already suffering from so many health problems, keep climbing the mountain to gather herbs in the wind and rain?

"Grandma, I'm mailing you medication tomorrow. Make sure you take it on time. Take good care of your health, and please don't push yourself anymore, okay?

"I'm not at fault in this matter. I didn't scam anyone, and I didn't spend money recklessly. Don't worry, Grandma. I'll handle this myself. I'm definitely going to clear my name!"

…

I didn't sleep a wink that night.

The next morning, my phone vibrated like crazy. Message after message poured in from strangers.

[Pretending to be poor to scam money is so disgusting. What a waste of public resources!]

[You have no conscience, you lying fraud!]

[Living it up using financial aid? People like you should just drop out of college!]

Malcolm poked his head out from the kitchen."Did she really apologize?""Yeah," I answered."You didn't forgive her?"I kept wiping the counter, looking down. "Nope. If I forgive her, what would that make everything I went through? I need to hold on to the fact that I didn't forgive her—as a reminder to myself."Malcolm let out a soft chuckle and ducked back into the kitchen. After work, my phone chimed with a voice message from Grandma.I tapped it, and her booming, energetic voice came through."Sweetheart! I took the medicine, and my back doesn't hurt anymore! I'll make some brownies next week and mail them to you. Share some with your boss who's been looking out for you!"I stood beneath a streetlight and chuckled out loud.…Brooke withdrew from the college. I wasn't on campus the day she left, but Chyler told me she'd dragged a suitcase out of the dorm by herself, and her dad had come to pick her up in his car.Later, I saw the college's final disciplinary notice on

Half an hour later, Tanner replied, "Received. We're looking into it now."At 10:00 pm that night, Chuck posted an announcement in the class group chat.[Regarding the malicious posts targeting Patty Thawne that have been circulating online recently, an investigation confirmed that they were posted by a student at this college using burner accounts. The individual's identity has been verified, and they will face disciplinary action from the college. The specific outcomes will be announced in due course.]The group chat went completely silent for three whole minutes. Then someone sent a message.[It was Brooke Rulin, wasn't it?]No one replied.Brooke didn't show up for class for three days straight. On the fourth day, her father came to campus.I ran into him outside Tanner's office. His hair was streaked with gray, and he was standing in the hallway smoking. When he saw me, he stubbed out his cigarette and walked over."Patty Thawne?"I nodded. He looked at me, his lips mo

I stood behind the counter, apron still tied around my waist, suddenly feeling like I didn't belong anywhere in the room.Priscilla's gaze swept over me, her eyes burning with anger and hurt. She didn't know me. All she saw were pictures of her husband spending time with a female college student late at night.I took half a step forward, trying my best to keep my voice steady."Priscilla, those photos were maliciously cropped. Someone's spreading rumors from a burner account, and I've already asked people to report it.""Be quiet."Priscilla looked at me, her eyes red. "I know who you are. You're the young lady who passed out in the shop. Malcolm has been running all over the place for you, what with the security footage, videos, and the sandwich shop owner. I've never seen him care this much about anything in his life. He told me you were about the same age as our daughter, and that he felt bad seeing you struggle!"Her voice caught, and tears spilled down her cheeks."Daughte

The auditorium erupted all over again, and this time, the uproar was ten times louder than before."So Brooke's not actually a student in financial need?""Her dad owns a company, and she still applied for financial aid?""And she was the one who led the charge against Patty?""My goodness. Just yesterday, she said in the group chat that she'd spend every penny on what mattered most. What was she referring to? Her family's one-million-dollar company?"I stared at Brooke. "Brooke Rulin, give the medicine back to me."She stood there, looking completely drained. Chuck reached into the bag behind Brooke and pulled out the crumpled sack of herbal medicine and handed it to me.I took it. All seven packets were still intact. Then I turned and walked out, leaving the uproar of the auditorium behind me.As I reached the door, Tanner's panicked voice called out from the front row."Patty, the college will reinvestigate this whole matter.""I know," I replied without breaking my stride

"Sir, did you give that girl who passed out a cup of coffee?" Brooke asked."Yeah. Her blood sugar dropped, so I made her a cup of coffee," Malcolm answered. "Why?"Brooke chuckled. "Oh, it's nothing. I was just wondering. Did she pay for the coffee herself? It's 5 dollars, right?""No, of course not! What kind of person would I be if I charged my employee for a cup of coffee I gave her after she passed out?"The video stopped there, with the final frame showing Brooke looking down and typing something on her phone. The entire auditorium fell dead silent.I turned to look at the audience. Brooke had her head bowed, her face as white as a sheet.I faced the students and faculty. "I never pretended to be poor. I work part-time until midnight every day. And when I passed out at the coffee shop, the owner gave me a cup of coffee that was worth 5 dollars. That's the whole story. As simple as that."Brooke Rulin, you knew the whole truth from the very beginning. You knew I passed out

During the morning break, a new notification suddenly popped up in the class group chat. Chuck had started an anonymous class poll.[Who do you think is better suited to receive this year's need-based financial aid the most?]There were only two options—A. Patty Thawne or B. Brooke Rulin. In just one minute, voting closed. Not a single person in class voted for me. Every single vote went to Brooke.Chuck chimed in offhandedly, [This is the will of the people. A certain someone should get a clue and give the money back.]Brooke immediately took a screenshot of the unanimous vote and forwarded it directly to the group chat for our entire year, which had hundreds of people in it.She wrote, [Thank you to all my classmates for believing in me. If I'm ultimately awarded the grant slot, I promise to spend every penny on what matters most. I also hope Patty Thawne can see reason soon and admit her mistake. We're all here, waiting for you to come around, Patty.]She was trampling on my
