Chapter 2

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
The classroom fell silent for a moment.

Brooke glanced at me timidly. "Patty, if this is all just a misunderstanding, you should just explain it clearly to Mr. Rickshaw. There's no need to find someone to pretend to be your boss…"

Chuck caught on immediately and sneered. "You say you're going to call the owner, but how do we know whoever answers isn't just someone you hired to back you up?"

He turned to the students behind him with a grin. "It's ridiculously easy to hire people to put on an act these days. Just go on Craigslist, and you can hire three for 25 dollars."

My face burned with frustration. "I'm not faking it! This is the actual owner!"

"Don't get so worked up, Patty. We're just worried about you," Brooke said, looking at me with concern. "You come back so late every night, and we're genuinely worried. Are you really working?"

Another classmate chimed in. "She's obviously up to something shady. Why else would she be so worked up? She clearly feels self-conscious."

I hurriedly opened my photo gallery, found the picture of my medical report documenting my low blood sugar, and sent it to the group chat.

"Look at it yourselves. It's from the ER at Mercy Hospital. It says I have hypoglycemia. I even have the doctor's signature on my medical records."

Everyone pulled out their phones to check the message.

Brooke blinked.

"Mercy Hospital… Isn't that a community hospital?"

I looked at her. "It's a medical center!"

She hurriedly waved her hands, as if afraid I might misunderstand her. "That's not what I meant. My cousin works at Mercy Hospital, and he said those kinds of ER medical records can be issued just by registering at the front desk. He said lots of people use them to get sick leave. They only cost five dollars each…"

"Exactly!" Chuck jumped in. "People do that all the time to get out of gym classes. They just go to the ER, tell the doctor they feel dizzy, and he just writes them a note. It's only five dollars a copy. How cheap is that?"

"No wonder she dared to post it in the group chat. The cost is so low," one classmate muttered.

With one casual remark from Brooke, my medical diagnosis had somehow become fake.

I clenched my jaw so hard it hurt.

"The coffee shop has security cameras. It was all caught on camera—from the moment I passed out to the owner pinching my philtrum to revive me and bringing me coffee. I won't send photos; I'll pull up the actual footage and show you!"

I called the coffee shop owner, Malcolm Heywood, and put him on speakerphone.

He immediately answered, "Hello? Patty?"

The moment I heard his voice coming from the speaker, I let out a sigh of relief.

"Malcolm, it's me. Can you pull up yesterday's security footage from the shop? People are accusing me of lying, and I need the video to prove that I really passed out."

There was a brief silence on the other end.

"Erm… I'm sorry, Patty…" Malcolm said, sounding hesitant. "The shop's surveillance system only keeps records for 30 days. Yesterday happened to be day 31, so it automatically got overwritten."

"What?" I asked, freezing in place.

"You know how our shop's security cameras don't have much storage space. I've been meaning to upgrade the system, but I just haven't gotten around to it…"

My mind went completely blank.

"But even though the footage is gone, I can still vouch for you," he continued. "You, Patty Thawne, have been working at my shop this whole past month."

I thanked him and hung up.

Brooke raised her eyes to look at me. "So, Patty? Did you get the footage? Or did the boss forget to turn it on? Or was it maybe…"

She didn't finish her sentence, but everyone understood exactly what she was implying.

Chuck grinned at me.

"Well, isn't that convenient? The medical reports can be obtained for just five dollars a piece, and the security footage just happened to get overwritten today. The owner is always available by phone, but somehow, the video can't be pulled up."

His mocking tone sent the entire classroom into an uproar of laughter.

In that moment, I truly felt like there was nothing I could say to defend myself.

"Enough!" Tanner snapped, his voice icy.

"You have no valid evidence to prove your innocence," he said, staring straight at me. "Everything you've said is just a one-sided claim. Patty, there's no point in arguing anymore."

Malcolm poked his head out from the kitchen."Did she really apologize?""Yeah," I answered."You didn't forgive her?"I kept wiping the counter, looking down. "Nope. If I forgive her, what would that make everything I went through? I need to hold on to the fact that I didn't forgive her—as a reminder to myself."Malcolm let out a soft chuckle and ducked back into the kitchen. After work, my phone chimed with a voice message from Grandma.I tapped it, and her booming, energetic voice came through."Sweetheart! I took the medicine, and my back doesn't hurt anymore! I'll make some brownies next week and mail them to you. Share some with your boss who's been looking out for you!"I stood beneath a streetlight and chuckled out loud.…Brooke withdrew from the college. I wasn't on campus the day she left, but Chyler told me she'd dragged a suitcase out of the dorm by herself, and her dad had come to pick her up in his car.Later, I saw the college's final disciplinary notice on

Half an hour later, Tanner replied, "Received. We're looking into it now."At 10:00 pm that night, Chuck posted an announcement in the class group chat.[Regarding the malicious posts targeting Patty Thawne that have been circulating online recently, an investigation confirmed that they were posted by a student at this college using burner accounts. The individual's identity has been verified, and they will face disciplinary action from the college. The specific outcomes will be announced in due course.]The group chat went completely silent for three whole minutes. Then someone sent a message.[It was Brooke Rulin, wasn't it?]No one replied.Brooke didn't show up for class for three days straight. On the fourth day, her father came to campus.I ran into him outside Tanner's office. His hair was streaked with gray, and he was standing in the hallway smoking. When he saw me, he stubbed out his cigarette and walked over."Patty Thawne?"I nodded. He looked at me, his lips mo

I stood behind the counter, apron still tied around my waist, suddenly feeling like I didn't belong anywhere in the room.Priscilla's gaze swept over me, her eyes burning with anger and hurt. She didn't know me. All she saw were pictures of her husband spending time with a female college student late at night.I took half a step forward, trying my best to keep my voice steady."Priscilla, those photos were maliciously cropped. Someone's spreading rumors from a burner account, and I've already asked people to report it.""Be quiet."Priscilla looked at me, her eyes red. "I know who you are. You're the young lady who passed out in the shop. Malcolm has been running all over the place for you, what with the security footage, videos, and the sandwich shop owner. I've never seen him care this much about anything in his life. He told me you were about the same age as our daughter, and that he felt bad seeing you struggle!"Her voice caught, and tears spilled down her cheeks."Daughte

The auditorium erupted all over again, and this time, the uproar was ten times louder than before."So Brooke's not actually a student in financial need?""Her dad owns a company, and she still applied for financial aid?""And she was the one who led the charge against Patty?""My goodness. Just yesterday, she said in the group chat that she'd spend every penny on what mattered most. What was she referring to? Her family's one-million-dollar company?"I stared at Brooke. "Brooke Rulin, give the medicine back to me."She stood there, looking completely drained. Chuck reached into the bag behind Brooke and pulled out the crumpled sack of herbal medicine and handed it to me.I took it. All seven packets were still intact. Then I turned and walked out, leaving the uproar of the auditorium behind me.As I reached the door, Tanner's panicked voice called out from the front row."Patty, the college will reinvestigate this whole matter.""I know," I replied without breaking my stride

"Sir, did you give that girl who passed out a cup of coffee?" Brooke asked."Yeah. Her blood sugar dropped, so I made her a cup of coffee," Malcolm answered. "Why?"Brooke chuckled. "Oh, it's nothing. I was just wondering. Did she pay for the coffee herself? It's 5 dollars, right?""No, of course not! What kind of person would I be if I charged my employee for a cup of coffee I gave her after she passed out?"The video stopped there, with the final frame showing Brooke looking down and typing something on her phone. The entire auditorium fell dead silent.I turned to look at the audience. Brooke had her head bowed, her face as white as a sheet.I faced the students and faculty. "I never pretended to be poor. I work part-time until midnight every day. And when I passed out at the coffee shop, the owner gave me a cup of coffee that was worth 5 dollars. That's the whole story. As simple as that."Brooke Rulin, you knew the whole truth from the very beginning. You knew I passed out

During the morning break, a new notification suddenly popped up in the class group chat. Chuck had started an anonymous class poll.[Who do you think is better suited to receive this year's need-based financial aid the most?]There were only two options—A. Patty Thawne or B. Brooke Rulin. In just one minute, voting closed. Not a single person in class voted for me. Every single vote went to Brooke.Chuck chimed in offhandedly, [This is the will of the people. A certain someone should get a clue and give the money back.]Brooke immediately took a screenshot of the unanimous vote and forwarded it directly to the group chat for our entire year, which had hundreds of people in it.She wrote, [Thank you to all my classmates for believing in me. If I'm ultimately awarded the grant slot, I promise to spend every penny on what matters most. I also hope Patty Thawne can see reason soon and admit her mistake. We're all here, waiting for you to come around, Patty.]She was trampling on my
