Chapter 1

Author: Silver Pendant
As the candles I set up went out again and again, the passion inside of me died as well.

Then, my phone, which had been quiet for so long, started to ring. I picked it up. "I gave Kat the spot for this year's retreat that’s meant for a family member. If you want anything, call my assistant. And I won't be home tonight. Kat just moved into her new place, and she's having a hard time settling in..."

I looked at the cake on the table that was meant for our anniversary. The candle that was shaped like a 2 on the cake felt like a joke.

At the end of his call, as if Jason Smith felt guilty, he added, "I've neglected you lately, so once I'm done with this busy period, shall I take you to see the aurora?"

I hung up, and our home went completely silent. Even the air seemed to be mocking my marriage. What a failure all of this was.

It was at this time that Jason's assistant sent me a message on WhatsApp, asking in that familiar way what I wanted reimbursed this time and telling me to just name it.

I suddenly felt that everything was so pointless. Eating cake felt pointless. Buying luxuries felt pointless. A life like this felt so, so pointless.

-

The next day, I went straight to the private hospital to see Jason.

He was staring so hard at his computer that he did not even notice me walking in.

When I called his name softly, he quickly closed the page he had been looking at in a panic. It was a ticketing page for a popular boy band's tour. "Why are you here? If you needed something, you could have called."

We had dated for three years and been married for two, and this was only the third time I had ever come to his office. I did not complain about how strange he was acting, and I just handed him the papers in my hand. "I need your signature on a few documents. The holiday is coming up, and their office will be closed, so I thought it would be better to take care of it early."

Jason took them with a knowing look, his voice teasing. "Oh? Did you fall for some limited-edition item? Were you afraid you would miss it if you waited too long? Look at you now, covered in designer brands. Even your image has improved somewhat!"

It was rare to see him this relaxed and cheerful. Maybe it was because the holiday was almost here, and he could finally go have fun with his "female best friend", Kat Brown.

I no longer cared whether he was happy or who he wanted to spend the holiday with.

That was because the papers I had just handed him were our divorce agreement. He did not notice it. Or maybe he was so caught up in his own mood that he did not care what I had given him at all.

He had abandoned me repeatedly to go find Kat, and I was never allowed to complain or cry about it. Whenever the two of them hugged without any sense of boundaries, Jason would say, "Kat's just one of the guys. I don't even think of her as a woman!"

Then why was she still able to take my husband away just because she was afraid of thunder?

Every time Kat called him away for one reason or another, Jason would say, "We're brothers, the kind who have gone through life and death together. If anything were to happen between us, it would've happened already. Don't be so petty."

So, why was he willing to fight to get concert tickets for her, yet never spare even one vacation with me?

Things like that had already happened ninety-nine times.

And yesterday, when Jason said he had given Kat the spot for family during the retreat, that made it a hundred.

Jason, I don't want to forgive you anymore.

I gave the signed divorce agreement to my lawyer. All that was left was to wait through the mandatory waiting period. One month later, the names "Jason Brown" and "Ida Hershey" would no longer appear together.

I actually felt calmer now that it had come to this. I'd had enough of feeling sorry for myself and beating myself up.

-

It was the twenty-sixth day of the countdown to the end of the waiting period and also the first day of the holiday.

Jason's vacation was very enjoyable. He had practically gone to every fun place in the city in a single day.

I was not jealous. Oceanton was beautiful, but I was already tired of it. After the divorce, maybe I should go to Medhel and see a different world. I even started humming as I thought about it.

When Jason came home to grab something and saw me like that, he seemed even happier.

"It's rare to see you not giving me any attitude, Ida. How about I take you to see the aurora the day after tomorrow? It's a once-in-a-hundred-year event, and they say wishes made there come true!"

I looked up at him and agreed. I hoped for an easy finish for this last stretch. I did not want him to get suspicious and make things harder. Maybe he had even forgotten about it himself. The address was sent to me later by his personal assistant.

-

It was the perfect place to watch the aurora. It should have been packed, yet only a few people were gathered near the front.

"Today's aurora is a once-in-a-century event. Good thing the director loves his wife so much that he booked out the whole place for her!"

"Exactly! Otherwise, we'd just be staring at the backs of other people's heads!"

I was a little surprised. Jason had always kept work and home separate, so the people at the hospital should not have known who I was. There was even less reason for him to book out a whole place to watch the aurora.

Sure enough, in the very next second, Kat and Jason were escorted straight to the center by the crowd.

Seeing how firm I was, Jason suddenly lost control. His face flushed red as he rejected whatever I had to say, "That divorce certificate was signed when I had no idea what was going on! It doesn't count. It's fake! Ida, just stop this already! As long as you forgive me, I'm willing to let go of everything and start over. If you don't like my job, I'll quit right now. If you like Medhel, I'll stay here with you and never leave."I looked at him quietly, my eyes calm and still as I reacted to his pleas with nothing. Then I shook my head slowly. "Jason, it's too late. Much too late. Some wounds can never be healed once they have been inflicted."The moment he saw how determined I was, anger surged through him. He pointed at Arsenio, who was standing a short distance away, and roared, "I knew it! It has to be because you've found someone else! He's a foreigner! What kind of happiness can he give you?! Can he understand you?! Can he give you the life you want?!"I gave a faint smile and

By my third month in Medhel, my days had slowly settled into a rhythm. It was simple but full of new experiences.Every day, I moved through this stylish and artistic city, experiencing the unique atmosphere of a country that was foreign to me.And of course, I had grown closer and closer to Arsenio. He was like a ray of light in my life, brightening a world that had once felt so grey. One day, Arsenio suddenly looked at me with a mysterious smile and said, "Tonight, I'm taking you to see the aurora."I froze for a second, then quickly came to my senses. Medhel was located in the mid-latitude. How could they possibly see an aurora here? I looked at him in confusion, my eyes full of questions. But Arsenio only smiled, his eyes shining with anticipation and excitement. "You'll see when we get there."-Night fell.Arsenio took my hand and led me to an open field. It was incredibly quiet around us, with only the occasional sounds of insects coming from the distance. I looked aroun

The next day, I boarded the plane with my simple suitcase successfully. This plane was going to take me away from this city that had only offered me a broken heart.Everything went so well that it felt unreal. It was as though fate itself was helping me, wanting to take me away from this place that was full of memories and pain. The moment I stepped onto the plane, I felt a burning gaze behind me. It followed me as if it had locked onto me. I did not need to turn around to know who it was.Jason.I did not look back. I quietly found my seat and fastened my seat belt. Then, I closed my eyes as I tried to calm myself. The flight from Oceanton to Medhel would take a full day and night. I could feel his eyes on me from time to time throughout the journey, but I never responded.I told myself that the past was over. From this moment on, I was going to start a new life. The moment Jason saw me in front of the hotel, his eyes lit up. He hurried over, the tone of his voice panicky. "Ida! Why did you pack your bags without telling me? Where are you going?"He really did look quite shaken to the point of almost seeming lost, just like when we had first met.I could not help recalling those early days when everything was so dreamy and beautiful. When he first courted me, he had been just as clumsy and nervous, like a blundering young man. There was this one time when we were walking through a park. When he spotted a cute little dog, he got so excited and grabbed my hand as he ran toward it like a boy, but he tripped on a rock, almost falling. Luckily, I had caught him just in time because I was fast enough. His face had turned red as he scratched his head in embarrassment. He looked so cute then. There was another time when I fell sick and ended up in the hospital. He had taken leave and rushed over with a huge bouquet of my favorite flowers in his h

I froze for a moment as the hand blocked my sight, then slowly looked up. My eyes met the eyes of a man standing in front of me. It was Jason. His hand hung in the air for a long moment. His sharp eyes were fixed on me as if he could see through me and read every thought I had kept hidden these past few days. Beside him, Kat wore a flowing scarlet dress, pulling all attention to her like a flower in full bloom. She wrapped herself around Jason's arm and stood at his side as if she were announcing something to the whole world. Just then, the cab pulled up in front of us. The driver had clearly run out of patience and shouted, "Which one of you is getting in? Stop wasting my time, please! I've got other passengers waiting!" Kat quickly tugged on Jason's arm and urged, "Jason, get in already. Stop dragging this out." I gave a small shake of my head. "I don't need it anymore." There were plenty of cabs in the world. It was just that this time, I was leaving their world for good

I went home after leaving that gathering. I then took a long, satisfying shower before falling into bed, quickly drifting off into a deep sleep.I slept for a very long time, so long that I nearly lost all sense of time. Then, a sudden burst of noise woke me from my dreams.I opened my eyes, still half asleep. Before I could make sense of anything, someone who reeked of perfume buried his face in my neck.I was wide awake in an instant, sick with disgust. I jerked and shoved the person hugging me away. When I looked closer, I saw it was Jason.Seeing me recoil from his touch, Jason gave me a helpless look and quickly began explaining. "Kat has had terrible luck lately. First, she got hurt, then she had to move, so we decided to help her get rid of the bad luck by getting her a new home."She's easily embarrassed, and she was too embarrassed to explain anything when they misunderstood her. Our honeymoon was rushed when we got married, so nobody there knew you. It would've been awk
