Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Kimberly swept an assessing gaze over Dad before uttering nastily, "This old coot's attire and demeanor might be a cut above others, but that doesn't change the fact that he's already most of the way to his grave. He can't compare to Luke at all."

Clicking her tongue, she added, "You must be desperate for money if you're willing to sleep with him."

From her words, Dad immediately understood that Kimberly was the homewrecker who had ruined my marriage with Lucas.

He struggled to get up and seek justice for me, but the movement pulled at where he was hurting, causing him to collapse back onto the couch.

Noting the pained expression on his face, I lunged forward and landed a resounding smack on Kimberly's cheek.

"Watch your mouth! He's my father!"

A hint of surprise flickered in her eyes before it was replaced by mockery.

"If you really did come from such a prestigious family, how could I have gotten off with just a simple apology after bullying you so terribly back then? Selina, just admit it! Without Lucas, you're nothing!"

Although Lucas had helped her at the time, he hadn't actually told her the truth and had hidden my family background from her.

Little did he know, his thoughtful gesture to protect his first love's pride would ultimately become the reason for her downfall.

Kimberly still didn't realize that anything was wrong as her eyes gleamed with triumphant smugness.

"Thankfully, you were self-aware enough to leave before it was too late, allowing me to get together with Luke. Someone like you only deserves to be the mistress of an old man like him!"

She cackled with laughter, but in the next second, a terrified look crossed her face as she screamed, "Ah! Let go of me!"

"Kimberly Lane, you asked for this!" My eyes were blazing with fury as I grabbed her by the back of her collar and started dragging her out of the room.

Suddenly, an arm slipped between us and pried her from my grasp.

"Selina Quinton, what the hell set you off this time? You really don't change, huh?" Lucas bellowed at me with disgust in his eyes.

I could forget about him being biased toward Kimberly in the past, but I honestly never expected him to still be like that when my dad's life was on the line.

My voice wavered when I shouted back at him, "Do you have any idea what your precious lover did? Her words angered my dad so much that his condition took a turn for the worse!"

Only then did Lucas notice that my dad was unconscious on the couch. The family doctor had already arrived and was performing emergency first aid, while Mom was slumped beside Dad, holding his hand tightly as she wept softly.

A hint of guilt flickered in Lucas' eyes. When Kimberly noticed that, she hastily squeezed out a few tears and tugged on his sleeve, sobbing, "Luke, I'm in so much pain. Please help me!"

The hesitation in his eyes instantly vanished. While comforting the woman trembling in his arms, he roared at me, "Dad is still alive, isn't he? So did you have to hit Kimmy that hard? Look at how terrified she is!"

I couldn't stop scoffing at his words.

My dad's life was hanging in the balance, but of course, that wasn't as important as his precious lover being scared senseless by me.

In that instant, I snapped completely. "Lucas Gardner, open your damn eyes and take a good look! You think I hit her too hard? I'll show you hard!"

I abruptly lunged forward to seize Kimberly by the hair before I began bashing her head against the floor.

"This is for your vile and wicked words! This is for all the times you purposely tested my limits! This is for hurting my family!"

Red bloomed on the floor as the loud banging rang out continuously.

Lucas attempted to pull me away, only to realize that I was somehow stronger than him in that moment despite my smaller size.

In the past, he hated my thorns, so I kept them away and pretended to be a delicate and fragile lily.

However, after the events of today, that wild, vicious side of me was reawakened and had come back even more savage than before.

With solid evidence proving Kimberly guilty of defamation and provoking trouble, she was detained for 15 days, fined, and ordered to pay a hefty sum for damages. The Lanes, not wanting to be dragged down into the mud with her, were quick to announce that they had cut ties with her. Hence, not only did Kimberly now carry a substantial debt on her back, but she had even lost her last safe harbor—the protection of the Lane family. As for the Gardner family, Thomas, for the sake of self-preservation, ruthlessly booted Lucas from the seat of Gardner Corporation's CEO and disowned him.Gardner Corporation was able to weather the heavy blows I dealt it, but only barely. After struggling valiantly for a few more months, it ultimately still declared bankruptcy.Under my leadership, Quinton Corporation quickly rose to become one of the leading companies in the city, while I went on to become one of the youngest celebrated entrepreneurs in the industry.Having both fallen from grace and su

Next to Lucas, Thomas spoke up for him as well, saying, "Selina, I've already taught him a lesson on your behalf, and I've also chased away that assistant of his. He merely made a mistake that every man in the world would make. Now that he knows he was wrong, won't you forgive him this once?"Despite the stern tone of his voice, there was nothing but apathy in Thomas' eyes, and the same could be said for Lucas as well.I couldn't stop myself from scoffing coldly. It was no wonder they were father and son. To them, the worst betrayal a spouse could ever commit in a marriage was nothing but a small, insignificant matter.I could only blame myself for being too naive in the past. There was no way that a man who could go so far as to have an illegitimate child could raise that child to be any sort of outstanding man.Lifting my head to look them in the eyes, I said, "I'm not a recycling station, so don't just send all sorts of trash to me. Let me make my stance clear one last time—I, S

A layer of cold sweat drenched Lucas' body at the butler's words.Off to the side, the anger that had been simmering in everyone boiled over in that instant, and they began berating him."Lucas, we didn't want to say anything, but you leave us no choice. As if it wasn't bad enough that you were fooling around outside, you actually paraded that woman in front of your wife too?""That's right! It would've been a small matter if it had only ruined your marriage, but now, you're affecting the entire family too! That's a huge problem!""If you ask me, you should quickly meet your wife and grovel on your knees for forgiveness while the company still stands. Otherwise, you'll only drag everyone down with you.""I second that! I honestly don't understand what you see in that lousy assistant of yours! She can't hold a candle to the heiress of the Quinton family, yet somehow, she has you completely wrapped around her finger!"Lucas flushed a bright red while his fingers curled into tight f

Naturally, Gardner Corporation's current predicament was all my doing. It was only then that Lucas finally understood that I was serious about my grudge with him, and I wouldn't stop until he was thoroughly ruined. His earlier remorse vanished in the blink of an eye as he slammed a fist onto his steering wheel. "Selina Quinton! At the end of the day, we were husband and wife! How could you be so ruthless!"The atmosphere in the car grew increasingly tense, only for his phone to ring again."Luke, help me! I'm being sued, and they're forcing me to apologize to the CEO of Quinton Corporation!"The frown on Lucas' face deepened. He was furious that I wouldn't even let a delicate woman like Kimberly off the hook. But more than that, he was annoyed at himself for dragging Kimberly down into this mess with him.He struggled to calm himself as he assured Kimberly gently, "Kimmy, don't be scared. I'll head over to you immediately."However, he was only halfway to the hospital when his p

How many nights had I spent clutching my phone, crying till the morning as I watched Kimberly's blissful social media posts?"To work overtime alone is to suffer. But with two people, it becomes a sweet moment of intimacy. Shoutout to my boss for being so kind as to keep me company! Love you!""I was so scared to be all alone in a motel room in the middle of the night that I burst into tears. Thankfully, my prince charming, a.k.a my boss, came to rescue the damsel in distress! How blissful is this?""Oh no! I accidentally messed up with a client. Luckily, my boss didn't blame me and even took me out on a vacation to cheer me up. I feel like the luckiest person alive right now…"There were plenty more of such posts, each flaunting something Lucas had done for her. Notably, all these blissful moments happened either during my birthdays or our anniversaries. Eventually, they even took over nearly every single day of my married life.In an instant, Lucas couldn't keep his composure an

Lucas shot me a dark look. "Let go of her!""In your dreams!" I retorted.Since he couldn't pull me away, he could only forcefully bend my fingers backward, one by one. The sound of bones breaking cracked through the air, causing me to furrow my brows tightly at the pain. Nevertheless, I gritted my teeth and refused to relent.Lucas ignored my pain as he continued to pry my fingers away. He warned, "Selina Quinton, you'd better let go right now! Otherwise, there really is no going back between us!"I failed to stop myself from scoffing once more. Even now, he still thought that I would regret my actions and turn back.Initially, I had planned on parting ways on amicable terms for the sake of our many years together. Now, however, I would fight him to the bitter end.Behind me, Dad suddenly opened his eyes and glanced in my direction before vomiting out a mouthful of blood."Dad!" I shouted, all the blood freezing in my veins. "Lucas Gardner, you've thoroughly pissed me off! If I
