Kelly's POV

By the time I finished telling her all that happened, Hope's face had gone from deep concern to absolute, blinding fury. "Those absolute monsters,"

she breathed, her voice shaking with rage. "To threaten you like that over a business loan? On the street in broad daylight?"

"They know where I live, Hope," I whispered, the cold reality settling deep into my bones. "They said they'd drag me out of here. I don't know what to do. I have no money, no job, and no time."

Hope didn't let me spiral. Instead, she gripped my shoulders, forcing me to look her straight in the eyes.

"Listen to me, Kelly. You are safe right now. They gave you two weeks, which means they aren't coming back tonight. We are going to handle this together, okay? You are not alone in this."

She stood up firmly, wiping a rogue tear from her own eye, and walked over to the grocery bag. "First, you need to eat. You can't think straight when you're running on pure adrenaline."

With quick, efficient movements, she unpacked the bag, setting out soup, bread, and fruit.

She opened one of the beer bottles and pressed the cold glass into my hand, forcing me to take small bites until the hollow ache in my stomach finally began to ease.

As the warmth of the food settled the worst of my hunger, Hope sat down beside me on the futon, her expression dead serious.

"Okay. Let's talk strategy. The landlord gave you three weeks, and the sharks gave you two weeks. Applying for retail jobs online isn't going to save you, Kelly.

A paycheck like that won't even cover your past-due rent, let alone thousands in debt."

I stared at the bottle in my hand, a heavy weight pressing on my chest. "Then what am I supposed to do? I'm completely out of options."

Hope took a slow sip of her drink, as a sudden, glint appearing in her eyes.

"Since I know you will rather chew glass than take money from your brother, what you need right now is a high-paying corporate position, or a serious connection with someone who has real financial leverage.” She said.

“And you're not going to find them in this dark apartment. Which is why you and I are going to Savágé tonight."

I blinked, seriously caught off guard by her train of thought. "What? The exclusive lounge downtown? Hope, did you not hear a single word I said? I was just assaulted. The last thing I want to do is go to a high-end club."

"No, Kelly, think about it strategically," Hope countered, leaning in, her tone shifting into pure focus.

"Right now, your mind is full of fear, and staying trapped in here staring at nothing is going to paralyze you.” She said, dramatically.

“Savágé isn't just a place to dance. Tonight is the city's annual venture gala's after-party. The entire lounge will be packed with high-rolling CEOs, and corporate executives.

The kind of people who can clear your debt with pocket change in their suits."

"Hope, I can't just walk up to a CEO and ask for money…" I said, shock that she could think that.

"No, but you can network. You can look like the brilliant, stunning fashion designer you actually are instead of hiding away like a victim," Hope interrupted firmly, cutting off my protest.

"You need to clear the fear out of your head so you can plan your next steps, and you need to put yourself in a room where opportunity actually exists.

Also I’ll be paying for the drinks. You just need to dress up, snap yourself out of this panic, and then we will go find a lifeline tonight."

I looked up at her, my arguments dying in my lips. She was right. Minimum wages wouldn't save my life in three weeks.

And if I stayed here, the panic would drive me insane before the deadline even arrived. I needed to act, I needed to step into a world that actually had the power to pull me out of the dark.

A small sigh escaped my lips, and I looked up at my best friend, the fear in my chest slowly hardening into desperate determination. "Okay. Let's go to Savágé."

Hope's face broke into a triumphant, radiant smile. "That's my girl. Now, let's go find something in that closet that will make heads turn.”

———————

The door of the cab slammed shut behind us as with a loud thud as we stepped out, cutting off the low hum of the engine and leaving us standing on the wet pavement.

I could hear the bass from inside the exclusive club vibrating straight through the concrete and into the soles of my heels, an intimidating pulse that matched the frantic rhythm of my heart.

Neon lights from the massive Savágé sign bled into the puddles at my feet, casting fractured streaks of crimson and gold across the wet ground.

I tugged at the hem of my dress, my fingers straining against the fabric as the chilly night air hit my bare legs.

"Hope, seriously, I can't do this. Wearing this dress was a mistake. It is way too short, way too tight, and I feel like if I take a deep breath or walk too quickly, the entire back is going to split wide open."

Hope grabbed my wrist, pulling my hand away from the hem with a firm, exasperated sigh.

"Kelly, stop touching it. You've adjusted it three times since we left the apartment." She said,

“You look absolutely incredible. That emerald green color makes your skin glow, and the dress hugs your curves in all the right places. You are a fashion designer; you should know better than anyone that this dress was made for your body."

She spoke with so much enthusiasm as she tried to convince me.

"It was built for a mannequin, Hope, or for someone who actually has a life to celebrate," I muttered, shivering as a sharp gust of wind swept down the block, biting into my exposed shoulders and back.

"Right now, I feel like I'm wearing a neon sign that says 'Desperate and Unemployed.'"

"You look like a goddess, so start acting like one," Hope countered smoothly, adjusting the collar of her bright pink gown.

She reached out and linked her arm firmly through mine, anchoring me to the spot before I could turn back toward the street to hail another cab.

Kelly's POV Ethan hesitated for just a tiny fraction of a second too long. I saw a small flicker of something in his eyes, but it was gone before I could identify it. He took another sip of his coffee and looked away from me. “Like I said, people leave. Maybe she quit suddenly and forgot her badge in the drawer. It’s not that big of a deal.”Before I could respond or ask another question, Ethan turned his chair back toward his own desk. He looked at Marissa instead of me. “Marissa, did you send those Westbridge contract revisions over to the legal team yet?” he asked.Marissa blinked, surprised by the sudden change in subject. “Yeah, I sent them this morning. Why?”“Good. Michael is going to want to see them before the noon meeting,” Ethan said. And just like that, the moment was gone. The conversation about Elena Voss was closed.Ethan had shut it down so quickly and so efficiently that it made my head spin. He was already typing away, his back turned to me.I looked down at the b

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    120. What Was Left Behind

Kelly’s POVThe doors of the Donovan building slid open with a soft, mechanical hiss as I approached it. The cool air from the lobby hit my face, a sharp contrast to the humid morning air outside. I adjusted the strap of my laptop bag on my shoulder, making sure it was secure before I started walking across the wide expanse of the marble floor. I still felt every bit of the tension from last week still sitting in the base of my neck, making my muscles feel tight and unforgiving. “Morning, Kelly,” the receptionist called out from behind the wide, circular desk in the center of the lobby.I stopped for a second and looked at her, because I didn’t want to look like something was wrong with me. “Morning,” I replied. But I didn't stop to chat like I usually did, I just kept moving toward the elevators.Everything in the building looked exactly the same as it had last week, but I didn’t feel the same. I felt like the world had shifted just a few inches to the left, and I was still tr

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    119. Out Of Sequence

Michael’s POVThe security office of the company was located in a windowless corner of the basement levels, far away from the polished marble and glass of the executive floor. The air inside the room was dry and smelled faintly of ozone and electronics. A dozen high-definition monitors lined the walls, casting a flickering blue light over the faces of the three analysts on duty. I stood directly behind Miller, the lead analyst, who had been with the Donovan Corporation for several years. He was usually a very stoic man, but today I noticed a slight tension in his shoulders as he navigated the video archives. “Play that again,” I said.Miller didn't say a word, he simply tapped a few keys on his keyboard, and the main monitor rewound the footage. The image was clear and captured in colors, showing the storage corridors of basement level B2. A digital timestamp in the bottom corner of the screen ticked away with mechanical indifference. The screen showed a long, narrow hallway lin

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    118. When Patterns Speak

Kelly’s POVI didn’t feel even remotely out of danger until I was safely behind my own front door. Even then, it took a long moment for my breathing to slow down to a regular rhythm. I stepped into the apartment and closed the door making sure I turned the deadbolt, hearing the solid click of the mechanism. And then I turned the secondary lock again, just to be absolutely sure that I was truly alone and secure. The silence inside the apartment wrapped around me immediately, but it wasn't a comforting silence. It felt too quiet, like the air was charged with mysteries. I dropped my bag by the small entryway table and stood perfectly still in the foyer as I found myself listening without even meaning to, straining my ears for any sound that shouldn't be there. It was as if I half-expected to hear something move in the bedroom or to see a shadow shift in the corner of my eye. I wanted to make sure that the terrifying feeling that had followed me all the way from the company's parkin

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    117. Too Close To Chance

Kelly’s POVThe meeting started at eleven in the morning and somehow stretched into almost two hours of talks that never quite said anything directly. And it was held in a massive glass-walled conference room on the twenty-third floor of a partner firm that Owen worked closely with. The room had a large table, filtered light, and overly confident people who smiled far too easily while choosing their words even more carefully to ensure they never committed to anything solid. I was there strictly to observe because that was exactly how Owen put it when he told me. “Just watch, take notes, and speak if you notice something important,” right before we walked through the doors. It sounded incredibly simple in theory, except absolutely nothing about the tense atmosphere in the room made me comfortable. Two senior executives and one sharply dressed external consultant sat around the table with Owen positioned at the head, looking completely relaxed like he owned the entire space witho

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    116. Lines That Shouldn't Be Crossed

Dylan’s POVThere were cases I took as a corporate lawyer because they paid exceptionally well, and there were cases I took because I genuinely believed in the cause. But then there were cases exactly like this one where I accepted the retainer far too quickly only to realize halfway through the discovery process that walking away might not be a survivable option anymore. I stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling window of my corner office and looked out over the grey Seattle skyline without actually seeing the rain-slicked streets or the towering glass buildings. Meanwhile the file remained open like an unexploded bomb on my desk behind me. The name on the front of the folder didn't mean much on the surface, because it looked like just another corporate logistics entity with a clean organizational structure. Also it had spotless tax records that wouldn't raise a single red flag if an auditor didn't know exactly where to look. When I first opened this law firm five years ago, I
