Kelly's POV

I looked up toward the entrance, and my stomach did a nervous flip. The line snaking down the sidewalk was filled with women in flawless designer gowns and men in tailored, custom-fit Italian suits.

Hope spoke to me,"Look at the crowd tonight, Kel. This isn't some college dive bar where people are spilling cheap beer on your shoes. This is the official venture gala after-party."

I stared as spotlights cut through the dark night sky, reflecting off the polished hoods of luxury sports cars idling by the valet station. Engines purred smoothly as wealthy patrons stepped out, handing their keys to attendants without a care in the world.

This was a world of untouchable wealth, a world where people didn't have to worry about their water being cut off or dangerous men cornering them in a dark alleyway.

"You belong in that room just as much as any of them," Hope whispered near my ear, her grip tightening supportively on my forearm as she began walking us toward the front of the line.

"Remember the strategy. We are here to clear the fear out of your head, snap you out of that panic, and put you in a place where a real opportunity can happen. Keep your chin up, and walk like you own the block."

I swallowed the massive lump of anxiety in my throat and forced my legs to move, my heels clicking sharply against the pavement. "Okay. Let's just get inside before I freeze to death."

The VIP line moved quickly under the watchful eyes of three towering, broad-shouldered bouncers dressed in matching black suits.

As we reached the front, Hope didn't miss a beat. She flashed her law firm ID card along with a pair of metallic VIP passes she had managed to secure through her office.

The lead bouncer glanced at the passes, offered a polite nod, and immediately unhooked the velvet rope, waving us through the glass doors with a smooth gesture.

The moment we stepped into the foyer, a wave of dry warmth, expensive cologne, and high-energy electronic music washed over us.

The interior of Savágé was breathtaking, designed to make ordinary people feel entirely insignificant. Crystal chandeliers hung from high, exposed black ceilings, casting a smoky, golden glow over the massive multi-level lounge.

A circular wrap-around bar made of polished black marble dominated the center of the main floor, surrounded by plush velvet booths where groups of executives were already laughing, shouting over the music, and clinking crystal glasses filled with champagne.

"Follow me, I see an opening near the bar," Hope called out, using her shoulder to carve a path through the sea of silk and expensive wool suits.

I kept close behind her, my eyes darting around the room as the heavy bass vibrated right through my chest.

The sheer sensory overload was dizzying, but for the first time since the assault, the terrifying memory of the switchblade at my throat began to recede into the background, replaced by the sheer noise and energy of the club.

"Brandy and a gin and tonic!" Hope shouted to the bartender the moment we reached the edge of the marble counter.

The bartender nodded, sliding the drinks toward us a minute later. Hope grabbed the glasses, handed me the gin and tonic, and raised her own toward mine. "Drink up, Kel. It'll help soothe those frayed nerves and take the edge off."

I took a long, desperate sip, the cold alcohol burning slightly as it went down, instantly helping to numb the cold knot of dread that had been sitting in my stomach all afternoon.

I leaned back against the cool marble of the counter, letting the pulsing rhythm of the music steady my breathing.

"I need to run to the restroom to check my makeup and fix a loose clip," Hope said, leaning close so I could hear her over the roaring volume of the crowd.

"Don't move from this spot. If any of these corporate suits try to buy you a drink while I'm gone, let them. Start practicing your networking face."

"Don't leave me here too long," I called out, watching her bright pink outfit disappear into the moving sea of well-dressed bodies near the VIP lounge stairs.

Left entirely alone at the crowded bar, the protective wall I had built up over the last hour began to fracture. I took another deep sip of my drink, keeping my gaze fixed on the glowing liquor bottles behind the bar to avoid eye contact with anyone nearby.

I felt like an imposter among these people, a ghost trying to pretend I still had a place in the business world.

But suddenly I felt an intense pressure against the back of my neck, like an invisible hand drawing my attention away from the bar and upward toward the exclusive VIP balcony overlooking the main floor.

I turned my head slowly, my eyes tracking past the glass railings of the second floor. He was sitting alone in a shadow-draped corner booth, entirely isolated from the laughing groups of executives and investors surrounding him.

Even from a distance, his presence was suffocating, commanding the space without him saying a single word.

He wore a dark, impeccably tailored suit that practically absorbed the dim club lighting, with his broad shoulders leaning back casually against the dark leather cushion.

A crystal tumbler of amber liquid was held loosely in his fingers, resting against his knee. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his jawline looked as though it had been carved from solid granite.

But it was his eyes that made the breath leave my lungs.

He stared down at me. His gaze was intense, dark, and piercing, stripping away the loud music, the crushing crowd, and the entire room until it felt like it was just the two of us existing in the space.

There was no warmth in his expression, only a consuming curiosity that made my skin prickle with a completely different kind of heat than the terror I had felt earlier in the alley.

My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass until my knuckles turned white. I knew I should look away. I knew I should hide from a man who looked that powerful, that untouchable, and inherently dangerous.

But under his unyielding, heavy stare, my pride flared to life.

For the first time all day, I refused to back down or run away. I held his gaze, lifting my chin slightly in open defiance as I took another slow sip of my drink, refusing to break eye contact.

Kelly's POV By midweek, the upcoming investors mixer had taken over everything else in my life. It had stopped feeling like an upcoming event and started feeling like a living thing, something that breathed and shifted and demanded attention every hour of the day.Claire, trusting that I wouldn't mess up, had handed me the responsibility with an encouraging nod. And a stack of notes that detailed venue confirmations, guest arrivals, and the internal coordination of the event. It wasn’t a big job to some of the others in the team working on the event, but it mattered, because it was the kind of work that only got noticed if it went wrong.I was reviewing a seating draft when Owen appeared beside my desk, leaning casually against the partition like he had all the time in the world.“Tell me you’re the person in charge of where every person is supposed to be on that day, so I don’t accidentally offend someone important and incur my brother's wrath,” he said.I looked up and smiled. “

Kelly's POV I arrived earlier than usual the next morning, hoping the head start would help me stay focused and finish all my tasks. It didn’t.I sat at my desk with my laptop open, emails already sorted into neat folders, my planner laid out beside the keyboard. Everything looked orderly, but I wasn’t. Every few minutes, my attention drifted toward the hallway outside Michael’s office, my body tensing at the thought of seeing him again. So I didn’t look.I kept my eyes on the screen, typing, deleting, typing again, lines blurring together and words losing meaning. I told myself it was ridiculous to feel this way over something so small. A brush of hands, just an accident.Still, my hands remembered the feeling.I shifted in my chair and forced myself to breathe slowly, grounding myself in the routine I had and familiar tasks, safe tasks.Michael hadn’t arrived in the office yet. Or if he had, his door was closed. That should have been a relief. Instead, it left me unsettled, as th

Michael's POV By the time the building emptied out at 5pm, I had been staring at the same file for ten minutes without reading a single sentence. The lights in my office were dimmed automatically during late hours, casting everything in a muted glow that usually helped me focus, but tonight, it did nothing. My tie felt too tight against my throat, my collar stiff in a way that made me aware of every breath I took. I should have taken it off an hour ago but I didn’t, because I wanted to appear professional in all the meetings I had.I told myself it was just another late night. I’d had hundreds of them over the years. Nights where work followed me home, where sleep was optional and discipline carried me through. Today should have been no different, but it was.I heard footsteps before I registered the sound of knocking on my office door. It was soft and controlled, I thought I was the only one remaining in the building, that everyone else had left for the day.“Come in,” I said, my

Kelly's POVThe park smelled like cut grass and sunscreen, the kind of late-afternoon air that made the city feel softer than it really was. I spread the blanket out under a wide oak tree, while Hope rummaged through the picnic basket like she was preparing for a small famine instead of a casual hangout.“You brought three kinds of hummus?” I asked, watching her line them up with exaggerated care.“Different moods require different textures, Kelly,” she replied without looking up. “Also, have you forgotten that Tessa stress-eats?”“Oh! That's true. You know it's been a really long time, so…” I said, as I thought about our friend who we met at college on orientation day, and from then on, the three of us had been thick as thieves. Until Tessa moved to Los Angeles with her college boyfriend five years ago and they got engaged three years later.“I was shocked when she told us she was back in Seattle. Do you think something happened? I asked her."I really don't know, that is while I p

Michael's POV I got to Owen’s penthouse a few minutes early, an action I knew he would claim as a personal insult to him. The elevator opens into his living room, and the place was already bright and loud, like it’s been waiting for an audience. Music hums from hidden speakers, and floor-to-ceiling windows show the city spread out in gold and steel.Owen appeared from the kitchen with two wine glasses in one hand and a dish towel over his shoulder, as if he’s been doing actual work. His grin is wide and unearned.“You’re early, Why?” he says. “Are you sick? Blink twice if you need medical attention.”“Try again,” I answered, setting my coat on the coat closet, at the entrance of his living room. “Some of us can manage time like functioning adults.”Scott steps out behind him, sleeves rolled to the elbow, looking responsible as always, and he carries a tray of appetizers Owen clearly did not help prepare.“Don’t mind his sorry ass, Mike. He’s been in here threatening the stove,” Sco

Kelly's POV I didn’t expect the day to start with me in Michael's car and him sitting silently beside me on the way to a meeting. I expected him to be a bit talkative and asked questions about the documents and files I prepared for the meeting, which was what he normally does. But today he felt locked up in a way that told me he wasn't in the mood to be messed with. His hand rested against his leg, fingers drumming now and then, the only sign that the calm expression on his face wasn’t revealing the whole picture. The location for the meeting came into view quickly, and it was ANTONIO’S. An expensive restaurant in a tall building of dark glass and steel, its entrance framed by deep green awnings. It looked even more expensive up close as the car came to a stop in front of it. When we stepped out, a valet rushed forward, giving Michael a half-bow that made me instantly self conscious. Michael always drew that kind of respectful and commanding attention without even trying. But
