Emilia

It wasn’t a question.

I couldn't answer him, but my silence was enough of an answer.

He continued looking at me and his stare grew more unnerving. Shutting my eyes I came back to my senses.

“It's none of your business. Y-you shouldn't have barged into my home. Leave now,” I snapped, trying to pull him away despite my racing heart.

He didn't budge. Instead his sharp gaze lingered on me.

“It is my business. It’s our child, after all,” he said, freezing me in place.

I held back the urge to flinch at his words. Unable to pull him away I took several steps back.

How was he so calm about this? Mentioning my pregnancy so calmly. I didn't even know him!

“What are you doing here?’ I huffed, trying to regain my composure, “How on earth is Richard Kane in my house?”

“So you do know who I am.”

A wave of embarrassment rose to my cheeks as his lips curled into a smirk. Nevermind that if you only found out recently.

A sigh left his lips.

“And to think that I came here for something else. You're full of surprises Miss Carter,” his deep voice rumbled, sending shivers down my spine.

“Luckily, I already have a solution in mind.”

My brows furrowed in confusion at the last line.

“What the hell do you mean?” I asked,

“Marry me.”

My jaw dropped. For a moment, everything halted as I'd processed what he was saying.

Marriage?!

It was ridiculous. Completely unbelievable, yet he still stood there, a smirk on his face. My heart sank as it dawned on me that he really meant it.

“You’re insane.” I said, my voice nearly a whisper. Was this how the rich and elite acted?

“This is the best solution for everyone involved-”

“No. You're insane!” I cut him off, shaking my head, “What are you talking about? I don't even know you. You can't just come out of nowhere and…”

First the pregnancy and his arrival and now, this? It felt like I was going through a nauseating rollercoaster.

Looking back at him, I found that his expression had changed. Gone was the smug smirk from earlier. For the first time, I saw something like determination flicker.

“An offer.” he suddenly broke the silence.

“What?” I blinked, unable to comprehend his words,

“You already know who I am, but you don't know why I came here. It was to personally give you an offer.” He replied simply.

“You're a peculiar person, Emilia Carson. In less than a month you've taken the business world by storm. Companies all over the city are already making plans to scout you.”

“I…” I trailed off as his words sank into me. If he was talking about my freelance work then that meant that companies were looking for me?

I knew there was an influx of jobs, but was it really that bad?

“That is how I found your address.” He continued, bringing me back to reality, “The plan was to offer you a special position in the company, but now, I have a second joint offer in mind.”

“Work for me and become my wife Emilia Carson. I'm offering you both a prestigious job at Kane Group, and my hand in marriage.”

“Why are you doing this?” I asked,

“I’m not trying to take over. But I won’t ignore my responsibility. This child deserves stability, and I intend to provide it.”

“No child of mine will be born out of wedlock. It will be a purely convenient arrangement, one which you can take advantage of.” he said, his voice low.

That was what he said, yet his eyes said something different. I couldn't keep away from his intense glare which seemed to roam every part of me. The first time I'd seen him I could clearly recognize his arrogance. Now all of a sudden, why did he look more amused and intrigued?

I swallowed hard, blinking away.

No matter what I was thinking, I couldn’t deny that he had a point. I had the support of Bae and stable finances, but how was I going to work through the more difficult periods of my pregnancy?

This wasn't only my child but his. The Richard Kane. And unlike what any other person would do, here he was, offering to support it.

Marriage? With Richard Kane?

It was completely insane , yet…

“Fine.” I finally said, surprising myself, “I accept both offers. I'll marry you.”

I was taken aback by my own words. Yet the more I thought about it, I realized that it made sense. For the sake of my child, I had to do this.

"Good," he said, his voice full of satisfaction.

His eyes lowered and I felt my lips tingle in response.

“I'm looking forward to this arrangement, Miss Carson.” his voice rumbled with something I couldn't place but sent shivers through my spine nonetheless.

Something told me I didn't know what I was getting into.

In less than a day, it was done.

By the evening, he had taken me to the civil service department where we got married in a small, private ceremony.

It was ironic to think that months ago, I had settled for a long engagement with Jayden in the past only to marry a man I knew nothing about.

In a few days time my life had changed drastically, I had moved in with him and had been officially employed under Kane groups. And now, only a few days after my ‘wedding’, I stood in front of the Kane group headquarters for my first day of work.

I had already been briefed by Colin, Richard’s Secretary on the ‘Secret’ High ranking position that was now my own. I was hesitant about starting work at Kane Group but he had assured me that everything would be fine.

"You'll be working in a temporary position until the official announcement is made," he said, “your identity as Richard's wife will be kept hidden for now.”

His assurances still didn't help the feeling of trepidation now as I walked into the Kane Group building.

Before my real position was given, I was going to begin acting as a mere office worker both as a front and in order to help me get used to the company. Stepping inside, it didn't take me too long to begin working. For a moment it felt like the day would go by easily.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I froze at the sound of a familiar voice.

I turned around to see it was none other than Jayden staring at me incredulously.

This was not what I needed.

EmiliaThe last thing I wanted on my first day at Kane Group was to run into Jayden. But of course, fate had a twisted sense of humor. It was almost as if the universe had conspired to test my patience, throwing me directly into the path of the last person I wanted to see.Standing in the hallway like he owned the place, Jayden turned at the sight of me, his brows furrowing in confusion before morphing into something even more insufferable—amusement.“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked, his tone a mixture of surprise and arrogance.I met his gaze without hesitation, keeping my expression calm, uninterested. “What do you mean, ‘what the hell am I doing here’?” I asked nonchalantly, as if his presence was nothing more than a minor inconvenience in my otherwise pleasant day.His lips curled into a smirk. “Oh, no, wait…” He took a step closer, tilting his head. “Are you here because of me?”The sheer confidence in his voice made my fingers twitch with the urge to wipe that smug g

EmiliaThe moment I turned to face the gossipers, my gaze locked onto one of the women in particular. Nora.Recognition hit me instantly. It wasn’t just the name—it was the way she carried herself, the sharp cheekbones, the haughty expression, the carefully styled hair that looked like it took an hour to perfect. She looked like her. Katherine. My lips curled slightly. Of course. Wasn’t it always the case? People like Katherine surrounded themselves with others who mirrored their own worst traits. If Katherine was an entitled, manipulative snake, then Nora was her eager apprentice. They are cousins And now, she was standing here, running her mouth about me. How predictable. Nora’s gaze met mine, her brown eyes flashing with something between challenge and curiosity. But just as quickly, she masked it, settling into a smug expression, lips curling into a knowing smirk. She wasn’t expecting me to confront her. I took my time, letting the silence stretch between us, w

EmiliaWalking through the sleek hallways of Kane Group, I was already prepared for the whispers, the side glances, and the not-so-subtle speculation about me. My presence here clearly unsettled some people, and they weren’t shy about showing it. But today, instead of hushed whispers and fleeting glances, I was met with something far more direct.Nora.I should have known she wouldn't back down after our last encounter. If anything, I had only fueled her desire to prove something—to herself, to her little circle of gossipers, and most importantly, to Katherine. And this time, she wasn’t alone.Standing beside her was Mr. Gallagher, one of the senior managers. A middle-aged man with graying hair, a slight paunch, and a smug expression that made my stomach turn. He carried himself with the confidence of someone who thought his position in the company made him untouchable—someone who believed he could do whatever he pleased and get away with it.His presence made it clear that this wasn

EmiliaThe news spread like wildfire.By the time I arrived at the office the next morning, everyone was already whispering about Nora’s sudden termination. It was almost laughable how quickly people turned on each other when the tide shifted. Just yesterday, Nora had walked these halls with her head held high, basking in her self-importance. But now? She was gone. And no one—not even her so-called friends—seemed particularly upset about it.As I made my way toward my office, I passed a group of employees huddled near the breakroom, their voices hushed but their excitement barely contained. They weren’t exactly subtle.“Did you hear? They kicked her out first thing in the morning.”“I heard she didn’t even get a chance to pack her things—security escorted her out.”“Well, that’s what happens when you mess with the wrong people.”A small smirk tugged at my lips. I had expected the whispers, but the sheer enthusiasm behind them was amusing. It wasn’t just about her affair with Mr. Galla

No one else had climbed the corporate ladder as fast as I had. No one else had proven themselves worthy. For the past year, I had secured high-profile deals, networked with top clients, and ensured that Kane Group’s reputation remained untouchable. More importantly, Richard trusted me. He valued my work. EmiliaIt had been hours since my confrontation with Jayden, but the heat of his words still burned in my chest. I had managed to shove down my emotions for a while, burying the sting of his insults deep down where I could ignore them—at least until the next time I’d have to face him. The anger, the accusations—none of it was new. But today, it had felt different. Personal. He wasn’t just angry about the position. No, it was more than that. It was about power. Control.I wasn’t the same Emilia anymore, and he couldn’t handle that. With a heavy sigh, I walked back to my office, the long hallway stretching before me like a passage I had to walk every day—grueling, unyielding. I passed several employees who quickly turned their attention back to their work as I approached, but I could sense the looks. The whispers. They were still fresh. Still sharp. When I reached my office, I felt a moment of relief, thinking I could finally gather my thoughts and catch my breath. It was only a fleetin

Richard’s POVThe room was silent again, all that could be heard was the soft beeping of the machines and the occasional rustling of the bed sheets as Emilia shifted slightly. I just sat there, watching her, not knowing what to say next. The weight of everything, the fight, the lies, the secrets, hung heavily between us. But I had to try, I had to make things right. After what felt like an eternity, it was Emilia who broke the silence. Her voice was weak, barely above a whisper, but I could tell she had been thinking about what had happened.“Why didn’t you tell me about Nora?” she asked, her eyes still closed, but I could see the hurt in her voice. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”I flinched at the question. My gaze dropped to our intertwined hands, and I squeezed her fingers gently, almost as if I could offer her some comfort through that small touch.“I didn’t want you to feel insecure about her presence,” I said softly, choosing my words carefully. “Nora’s part of my past,

Richard’s POVThe beeping of the monitor was the only sound in the sterile hospital room. It kept rhythm with my pulse, reminding me that Emilia was still here, that she was still alive. I sat beside her, holding her hand gently, watching her sleep. She looked so peaceful, but I knew better. I knew the fear and anxiety she must have been feeling before all this happened. And I couldn’t stop blaming myself for it.I kept staring at her face. It hurt to see her like this. I had no idea things would go this far. I shouldn’t have agreed to that drink with Nora. I should have said no, walked away, gone straight back to my room. But I didn’t. And now look where that got me.I leaned closer and brushed a strand of hair away from Emilia’s forehead.“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I swear I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”There was no response. The nurse stepped in quietly and checked the monitor. My mum always said I should speak like a lady. She always said swearing made people look rough and disrespectful. But right now? I didn’t care. None of that mattered.Because what I was seeing?I couldn’t believe it.Richard. My husband. With another woman. Alone.I stopped in the doorway. I couldn’t move. My eyes were wide open, frozen on them. My arms hung by my sides shaking. My whole body felt hot, like fire was spreading under my skin. It was hard to breathe. My chest ached, and my throat was tight.Richard and Nora. She was standing too close to him. Way too close. Her hand had been on his arm when I walked in. Now she quickly stepped back like she’d been caught doing something she shouldn’t. Her eyes met mine for a second, and I saw it, that flicker of guilt. But it vanished just as fast. EmiliaAfter Richard left, I stayed in bed for a while with my hand resting on my stomach. I didn’t move much. Everything felt heavy. My eyes, my arms, even my heart. I turned on my side, hoping it would help, but it didn’t. The room felt too quiet, like it was pressing in on me.Another wave of nausea hit me hard, stronger than before. I covered my mouth with one hand and breathed through my nose. I didn’t know if it was the pregnancy or just stress, but either way, I knew I couldn’t stay like this forever.I pushed the blanket off and slowly sat up. I waited a second as my head spun a little, then stood up on shaky legs. My feet touched the cold floor, making me shiver a little. I walked slowly to the bathroom and turned on the water. When I let the cold water run over my hands and splash my face, I gasped. It was freezing. But honestly, it helped. The cold pulled me out of that dull feeling. I let the water run down my arms and leaned over the sink, just breathing. After a while, I

EmiliaI stepped into the hotel room—or suite, or whatever it was called—and my jaw almost dropped. The place was insane. Big wasn’t even the word. It was stunning. The kind of room you only see in magazines or movies. The floor was all marble, so shiny I could probably see my reflection if I looked down long enough. Right in the center of the ceiling, this massive chandelier hung down like it belonged in a palace. It sparkled like stars were trapped inside it.The walls were spotless and smooth, painted in this soft cream color that made the gold decorations pop even more. Every little thing in that room looked expensive. Even the handles on the drawers and cupboards—they weren’t just metal, they looked like real gold. I didn’t know if they were, but still, they had that kind of shine.I walked into the bedroom and paused right at the door. It was beautiful. The bed was huge—like, you could roll around for hours and still not fall off. The sheets were bright white and looked so fr
