LUCAS’ POV.

Sadie looked at me, and tears filled up her eyes.

“Thanks for the lesson. Run when I’m scared. Hide instead of fight.” She said, and turned away, leaving my room. I sighed.

I wished it was as easy as she thought it was, but the Alpha Marriage wasn’t something anyone would fight. Emily was completely John’s.

If she tried to love or get married to me, then I would die. She wouldn’t want that. She’d blame herself, and I thought it would be best if we could at least see each other once in a while, than an unnecessary tragedy.

After packing up, I kept my things in Mira’s foyer, since I would not be returning to the room, or the mansion.

The wedding started only when the bride walked in, and honestly, I wished she didn’t look so beautiful. I wished she didn’t have to make my heart beat as hard as that.

“She’s beautiful. I’m glad John worked things out.” Raymond said, with a smile.

“In the future, she’ll appreciate what he did for her. John’s going to be an Alpha, and she’ll

132EMILY’S POV.Instant fear filled me. What had we done? Why did we do it without thinking? The previous night had been so fast-paced that we had forgotten all about the deep bond me and John shared. We had only been thinking of each other’s pain and longing.I personally, had longed for it, and stopping Lucas would have been easier than stopping myself.Lucas raised a hand to his heart.“You’re right. I should be dead.” He said, staring into space, confused.“You should? It’s not a gradual death stuff?” I asked, and hit his shoulder. Just to be sure he was in front of me, and I hadn’t imagined the whole thing, after going crazy.“Ow! Do you think I’m a ghost or what? That’s so cliché. A ghost returning to his lover.” He said.“You could as well be. But, wait. We… we signed it with each other’s blood. How come you’re not dead?” I asked, wanting to be sure I wasn’t going to suddenly lose him along the line, and also wanting to know if we didn’t have to stay away from each other.“You

131LUCAS’ POV.I stared at her. A beautiful creature, radiating with brilliance under the moonlight. She was the most beautiful thing ever. Her large dark eyes filled up with tears over and over again, and they fell quickly down her fair cheeks. She hadn’t changed out of her wedding dress, and her makeup and veil were still on her. Just the mere sight of her, and immeasurable joy filled my heart, but that joy shared that space with pain that also couldn’t be measured. It seemed deep down, I had actually wanted to see her before leaving, but the rational part of me knew that seeing her would make it hard to leave. And when she expressed her feelings, telling me she also loved me, with such desperation, and fearlessness, I couldn’t help the heat wave that rose within me. It felt like my heart was rising. A mix of joy and sorrow I had never experienced clouded me.Was I really leaving her behind? When I’d already confirmed that she felt the same? That she wasn’t just comfortable or frie

130EMILY’S POV.I looked at Sadie with wide eyes.“I have to go. It’s up to you to decide.” She said, and turned away.“Decide what?” John’s eyes flew open.“None of your business, Mr. Happily married.” She replied, leaving.“Emily.” John called, but I was still staring at the note, feeling like I might burst into tears.I could feel a shudder from my chest, rising from deep within, and the feeling was so much like the feeling of a child’s guilt after doing something horrible that cost the people around them a lot.No, that couldn’t happen! Lucas couldn’t leave. He had been absent for a month, and it felt like my heart was burning… What would be of my heart if he left completely?I got to my feet immediately, squeezing the letter, as I made my way to the door. No matter what happened, I had to stop him from leaving. However, before I could pull the door open, John grabbed my arm.“Where are you going?” He asked, looking at me like I was meant to stick to him like glue.“Do you need t

128JOHN’S POV.I walked out of Dad’s mansion into the beautiful night, and saw the guests doing various things. Due to the fact that the wedding had taken place in the evening, they had been told they would stay overnight, and have a feast to celebrate the wedding the next day.“My good man, John! Come here.” One of Dad’s best friends, who had flown thirteen hours just to attend my wedding said, opening his arms.We embraced, and he slapped my shoulder, “There you go. You’re all grown up now. You found yourself a beautiful bride.” He said, and the people with him all laughed.“You know, this boy was a really ambitious boy from the start. When he was five, he would sit on his dad’s lap while we talked about business, and politics, and he would ask a lot of questions.”“You did that, John?” A woman asked, and I smiled, lowering my gaze out of respect.“You know what this lad would say whenever we told him he didn’t need those answers because he was a kid? Tell them, Johnny. Tell them w

127EMILY’S POV.I sat in the makeup room—a beautiful bride. As beautiful as I always wanted to be on my wedding day. My wish was coming true, but the longing for it had long faded away.I looked out the window. It was evening, already, meaning in less than an hour, I would be married to John.“Oh please, don’t cry. Not yet. This has to dry up first.” The makeup artist said, and I raised my head to stop my tears from falling.“It’s a beautiful day, you shouldn’t cry no matter how happy you are.” Another said to me, smoothening my dress. She continued, “With your wedding comes spring. The snow is thawing, and the wind is warm. Very soon, we’ll see the definitely-missed flowers.”I nodded, and she smiled.Once more, I looked out the window. Was no one really coming to save me? Did I really have to get married to John?Shortly after my makeup was perfected, Kaye came in.“The wedding has started. The bride will be needed soon.” She said, and the women helped me get to my feet.We walked
