Despite her coldness, I couldn't stop starring at The Evelyn Carter.

She was beautiful, the real personification of old money.

Severe, impeccably dressed and her hazel green eyes possessed a gaze that could dissect diamond. It was obvious Owen got his looks from her.

"Owen darling, she greeted him, her voice cool and crisp. She offered him a cheek, then another, completely ignoring me until he lightly placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Mother, this is Tessa. Tessa, my mother, Evelyn."

Owen introduced us, his voice firm, leaving no room for her to try to dismiss me.

Evelyn finally turned her attention to me, her sharp eyes carefully scanning my dress, my hair, and landing critically on the diamond ring on my finger.

"A pleasure, Ms Hayes. Though your entry into our family was pretty...rapid. Wouldn't you say?"

"Sometimes the best things in life happen fast, Mrs Carter," I replied, forcing what I thought to be a polite smile.

Without a comeback, she led us into a formal dining room where

I sat across from Owen in his private jet, trying to focus on my magazine, but my eyes kept drifting back to him. Our honeymoon at the Hamptons was gone in what seemed like a snap of my finger. The silence between us was heavy, charged with unspoken words. We hadn't walked much after the morning we had sex and what followed after. I had made sure to keep my distance. On the bright side, it gave me some girl bonding time with the housemaids. But even after all the time to myself, I couldn't shake off the memory of his face that morning – the raw passion, followed by the cold mask he put back on. "Are you going to stare at me, or eat your lunch, Tessa?" Owen asked, his eyes still on his laptop screen. I hadn't realized I had been looking at him. Sitting up and clearing my throat, I tried to regain my composure. "I'm thinking," I replied, putting the magazine down sharply. "About what?" he asked, finally looking up. "About you," I said honestly. "About how you can be so

Owen finally stirred, kissing my temple before getting out of bed. He retrieved his discarded towel and wrapped it around himself. I could feel his gaze on me for a moment, and combined with the heavy air around us, it made the hairs on my neck stand. "Breakfast will be brought up," he said, walking to the table to retrieve his phone. His shift of his mask back to the CEO was brutal. "Owen," I said, sitting up, pulling the duvet over my bare breasts. "Wait." He paused, still looking at his screen. "Yes?" "What...what was that?" "What?" he asked, finally raising his head from his phone screen. "Well...we had sex Owen. If you need me to spell it out for you." "We're married Tessa, that was bound to happen." he said, reverting his gaze to his phone and then to the wardrobe to pick out some clothes. I could see his shoulders become slightly tense and that pushed me to ask more. "So you're saying our sex was...a necessity?" I asked, feeling hurt by my own choice of wo

The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass, but I didn't open my eyes right away. My body felt heavy and slow, weighed down by the tense night I had with Owen. I positioned myself far from my husband and tried to see if I could sleep off again, to where I had a little peace. I couldn't. I opened my eyes. The space next to me was empty. Of course he would have gone back to business reports instead of actually spending his honeymoon with his wife. Then I heard water running. The sound was coming from the massive, open-concept bathroom area. I sat up, pulling the thick duvet around me. The events of last night replayed in my head, making my chest tighten. I breathed out air from my lungs to prepare myself for a day of unhappy tension. The bathroom door slipped open. Owen stepped out. He was wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist. Water drops glistened on his hair and slowly dropped on the sculpted muscles of his chest and shoulders. The sexiness hi

The room was too big and too quiet. The master suite was all grey, white and dark wood. With the bed, low and in the centre. I slipped off the bed very quietly. My heart was pounding so loud, I was sure Owen could hear it, even with his back turned. But he was silent, an unmoving shape at the far end of the mattress. He's asleep, or is pretending to be. Either way, I was safe for now. The relief that washed over me made my knees weak. I pulled the soft silk robe tighter around me. Walking slowly, I made my way to the huge glass windows. They made up the whole outside wall of the room. I could see the dark ocean and the pale moon outside. It was a perfect view. The glass was so thick it shut out the whole world. And I could view it from the other side of the glass. I sat down on the low, hard window ledge, and hugged my knees to my chest. I thought about Owen. He was the real problem. Not the contract, not the media, him. During the ceremony, he looked at me wi

The car was too quiet. It was the expensive, thick kind of silence my driver always kept. But tonight, it felt like noise. Loud with all the thoughts I didn't want to have. Tessa sat far away from me, pressed against the car door. We had stopped by the penthouse to pick up a few things before heading to our honeymoon destination. The wedding had tired her out. I knew the silence was making her more nervous. I looked at her, she looked scared. Not just because of the wedding, she was scared of me. I gripped the leather seat. The whole wedding was a show she had requested when she agreed to my contract, but it also meant we had to be a real couple. Society expected it. My mother expected it. I hated that I cared what she thought. I hated that I kept seeing the fear and uneasiness in her eyes. I shut my eyes remembering the guilt that made me build this wall around myself years ago. Walls to stop me from feeling anything I might lose. Love is weakness. But Tessa made m

Taking a deep breath, I nodded. Slowly, I walked into the room filled with faces I had never seen before. All people of high status. I walked with my head high, focusing on the beautiful arrangements of the white orchids until I reached the altar where the priest and Owen stood. I could feel all eyes on me. Some stared with curiosity, others with distant repulsion. It was the fault of the media, the fault of the contract, and entirely the fault of the man I was about to marry. The man I was about to marry. The room went quiet as my eyes finally found him on the same altar I stood on. He looked utterly breathtaking in a bespoke black suit. Hazel eyes looking deep into me, making feel naked under his gaze. His raven black hair was combed back, little strands decorated his forehead and neckline. The scent of ceder filled my nostrils as he took my hand in his. The touch, usually so cool, was filled with so much warmth as it was firm. "Good day brothers and siste
