Chapter 1

Seven days left until I leave.

At 9:00 am on Sunday, I handed my application for a forced mate bond dissolution to the clerk at Werewolf City Hall.

Last night, I booked a one-way ticket to Bordevia.

The clerk verified our marriage record and mate mark, then handed me the receipt. "It takes effect automatically in seven days, next Sunday at 9:00 am. Your mate won't be notified, and his signature isn't required. But be warned, a forced dissolution causes severe bond-severing pain for both of you."

I signed the confirmation.

That Sunday morning, my Alpha husband, Leon Gray, was scheduled to launch Livie Grant's foundation. He had promised to take me for a walk on the beach after the ceremony.

Now, he wouldn't need to rush anymore.

Outside, Serandor's rain tapped against the glass.

Deep in my consciousness, Nora, my wolf, curled up and covered her nose with her tail. She hadn't reached out to Leon's wolf in a long time.

"Are we really leaving this time?" she asked.

I tucked the receipt into my bag. "Yes."

Last night, I was sitting in the evaluation room at the healing center, waiting for Leon.

I had paused my clinical research for four years, but I maintained my license and kept up with my continuing education. That evening's practical assessment was the final hurdle before I could resume independent practice.

A mate wasn't required to attend.

Leon had insisted on coming, saying he wanted to see me back in my white coat with his own eyes.

At 5:00 pm, he checked in on me through our mind-link, asking if I was nervous. His familiar cedar scent wrapped around my mind, just as he used to hold me.

"We'll get dinner after you finish. I booked that restaurant you love."

At 6:50 pm, his text arrived. "Livie isn't doing well. I need to go to her. Go ahead without me."

I stared at the screen until the evaluator called my name a second time.

This was the fourth time this month.

The first was my birthday. The second was Nora's checkup. The third was the mate counseling session he had suggested himself.

Every single time, Livie happened to need him.

Her brother, Troy Grant, had died on border patrol 18 months ago, saving Leon's life. Leon had promised to take care of her, and I truly wanted her to recover.

In the beginning, I had even helped her find a healer to treat her trauma.

Later, she got a dedicated healer, made friends, and went back to work. Yet Leon remained the one person who could never be absent.

And I was always the one who could wait.

My palms were soaked in sweat when the evaluation ended.

Handing me the certificate, the evaluator said with a smile, "Welcome back, Ms. Vale."

It had been a long time since anyone called me by my maiden name.

Leaving the center, I wanted to share the good news with Leon.

Then a video notification popped up on my phone from the foundation's planning group chat. As the Luna overseeing medical arrangements, I was still in the group.

In the video, Livie stood before a floor-to-ceiling window, trying on a white suit for tomorrow's photo shoot.

Leon sat on the couch behind her, his jacket draped over the back.

"Are you sure about this one?" she asked the mirror.

"Yeah. It's your first time hosting. Comfort comes first."

There were no healers or medicine on the table, just untouched pastries and a takeout bag from my favorite restaurant.

Livie suddenly glanced past the camera and smiled. "Didn't you promise to go to Irene's evaluation?"

Leon checked his watch. "She's well-prepared. She doesn't need me worrying over her."

He picked up another outfit and handed it to her. "You, on the other hand, have been trying on clothes all night and haven't eaten a bite."

The video ended there.

Standing on the sidewalk, I slipped the certificate into my bag, creasing a corner of the paper.

His peace of mind was just an excuse to always put me last.

When I got home, I didn't ask when he'd be back.

I opened my laptop and looked up the process for breaking a mate bond for the first time.

A werewolf could file for a forced dissolution unilaterally at Werewolf City Hall. It took effect automatically upon expiration, with no prior notice required.

Filling it out took me two hours.

I paused when I reached the section for post-dissolution career plans.

A year ago, Silver Bay Healing Center in Bordevia had invited me to interview for a research position. Leon later told me they rejected me because I had been away from research for too long.

I had believed him.

He had just taken over as Alpha of the Cedar pack back then, and there was so much to handle. I hid my disappointment and kept helping him organize endless late-night meetings.

That night, I tracked down the interviewer's email from back then and sent over my new certification.

I wrote a single sentence. "If there are any future openings, I would love to reapply."

They replied almost instantly, "Irene, we had already decided to hire you back then. Your mate informed us that you were withdrawing due to family obligations. Didn't you receive the official offer letter?"

I read it three times.

Hands shaking, I asked her to forward the past correspondence.

Just then, the front door opened.

Leon walked in carrying the damp chill of the rain, holding a small cake box.

"I'm sorry. Is it over? Livie couldn't make up her mind today."

As he leaned down to kiss the top of my head, his eyes fell on the certificate next to the laptop.

"I knew you'd pass."

At that moment, my mate mark still flared with warmth at his touch.

My body still remembered how to love him.

He set the cake down in front of me and expertly removed the strawberry on top.

He knew I was allergic to strawberries. He also knew how to strip away a future that should have been mine.

"Leon."

I looked at him. "Did you reject the Silver Bay offer for me last year?"

His hand paused.

He asked no questions and showed no surprise. "Bordevia is so far away, and I couldn't bear to be apart from you. Irene. I didn't want to come home every day to an empty house."

When my three-month fellowship came to an end, I passed the retention evaluation. The night before the results were announced, I was too nervous to sleep and kept flipping through the materials I had prepared.Nora lay by my pillow, her tail brushing against my hand. Her coat had regained its luster, and she was able to join me for light jogs through the woods within the limits allowed by my healer."What if we don't pass?" she asked."Then we ask where we need to improve."I switched off the desk lamp. "Let's have breakfast first tomorrow."I used to think that coming to Bordevia meant I had to immediately prove I hadn't made a mistake.Only later did I realize that there were endless records to write here too, along with rejected proposals and evenings when I was so exhausted I just wanted to lie down. But here, I could say I was tired, I could ask for help, and it was okay to temporarily fall short. No one was going to cancel my tomorrow because of it.On the day I signed

A week after our meeting, the foundation sent me a correction statement. The draft stated that due to insufficient communication during early promotions, the contributions of all parties had not been fully presented.Attached was a letter asking me to attend a rescheduled press briefing and take a photo alongside Leon and Livie.I read that sentence twice and sent the document right back. "Please clarify whose name was removed and who made the decision to remove it. A correction does not require my presence for a photo."Leon called me that very day. When I didn't pick up, he sent an audio message. "I didn't draft that statement. I've already asked them to modify it. You don't need to come back."This time, I didn't offer excuses on his behalf for why the board wanted to downplay the issue. It was up to him to explain.Noah sent me the video recording of the next day's meeting.Leon sat at one end of the long table, the original drafts spread out before him.A board member as

Leon apologized to me first. He apologized for the acceptance letter, for the author credits, and for the evaluation he never showed up for.He pushed the board's receipt toward me. "I've already admitted that altering the credits was my decision. The brochure will be reprinted, and I've made things clear with Livie. Her therapy and foundation affairs will be handled by the team in charge from now on."I read through it and nodded. "Please email me the official version once it's updated."As he watched my reaction, his throat bobbed. "I didn't come here just to deliver this.""I know.""About that job offer… I was too selfish."He cast his gaze downward. "When I took over as Alpha, there were endless things to handle every single day. Just knowing I could come home to you, that no matter what happened, you'd be by my side, made me feel like I could keep going."I was terrified that if you went to Bordevia, you'd make new colleagues, start a new life, and slowly realize you didn

It was already dark by the time I landed in Bordevia. As I pulled out my phone, the screen was packed with missed calls. The last thing Leon sent was a photo. On the dining table sat two servings of mushroom risotto, with the wedding ring placed right beside them."Irene, please come back. I'll listen to whatever you want to say."I stared at it for a long time, right until the crowd around the baggage carousel dispersed. My stomach was aching from hunger, and only then did I realize I had only eaten half a slice of bread all day.I put my phone away and bought a cup of coffee at the airport.Halfway through, tears dropped into the cup.I wasn't crying just because of Leon. It was also because, after leaving Serandor, I surprisingly had no idea how to spend an evening that belonged entirely to myself. No one was waiting for my handoff forms, no one needed reminding to take their meds, and there was no dinner that might fall through at any second.I held the cup and slowly fi

Leon's first reaction was that there had been a mistake with the notice. He tried the mind-link once more.In the past, as long as he released even a trace of his scent, I would always respond. Even if I was too busy to speak, Nora would gently nuzzle his wolf, letting him know I heard him. This time, there was nothing. His wolf slammed into that pitch-black void within his consciousness, and the sudden sharp pain made him grab the back of a chair for support.Livie reached out to steady him. "Are you exhausted from last night? I'll have someone take you to the lounge to rest."Leon pulled away from her hand and dialed city hall. The clerk verified his identity and repeated the exact time of the dissolution. "At 9:00 am this morning. The notice you received is valid.""I didn't consent to this.""A forced dissolution does not require the other party's consent."He gripped his phone, suddenly recalling that night a week ago.I had asked him about the offer letter in a very qu

One day left until I leave. On Saturday morning, I retrieved the revision history of the brochure. The medical proposal had always been stored in the project directory I managed. The original drafts, every single revision, and all approval comments were properly archived. The initial deion was clear. "The medical program was designed by Irene Vale, with Livie Grant responsible for public outreach."It was Leon who had requested the change. In the feedback column, he wrote, "Highlight Livie's personal contribution to avoid the public viewing the foundation as an affiliate of the Luna."I redacted the personal details in the case studies, sent the revision history and the original drafts to the board, and requested a correction of the author credits. After processing the last piece of paperwork, I returned to the bedroom to pack my luggage. The long dress I wore at our mating ceremony still hung deep inside the closet.I left the dress right where it was. Instead, I packed my ID
