Harper

The sharp click of my black heels against the polished marble floor echoed down the hallway like a countdown. With every step away from the elevator, a voice in my head screamed at me about what a massive mistake this was—and how the disappointment would absolutely crush my mother if she ever found out. But backing out wasn't an option. Not tonight.

Miles away, my mom was waiting for medical treatments we couldn't afford. My college tuition was past due, and my debts were snowballing faster than I could keep up. Tonight was my only way out, my one shot to fix everything. I can do this, I repeated like a mantra, tightening my grip on my handbag as I walked toward the private dining room. I’d already crossed the point of no return.

I felt utterly exposed. The burgundy satin dress was impossibly tight and dangerously short—definitely not something I’d ever normally wear. The fitted bodice hugged every single curve before cutting off mid-thigh. A low, dipping neckline teased a hint of cleavage, while the back was practically nonexistent, held together by nothing more than two delicate straps crisscrossing my bare shoulder blades.

Thank God for the side slit, which gave my legs just enough room to actually walk in these heels. I’d spent an agonizing hour staring in the mirror just trying to build up the nerve to leave the house.

My auburn hair tumbled down my back in loose waves, framing a face I barely recognized. A layer of foundation managed to hide the sheer exhaustion darkening my green eyes, and a quick swipe of nude lipstick finished the look. I’d even put in the delicate gold earrings I’d been given for my eighteenth birthday—a bittersweet reminder of a simpler time.

Looking in the mirror, I knew I looked beautiful, but I also looked completely different. I looked like a whore. But I couldn't afford to care about my pride. I was drowning financially, and besides, it was only for one night.

Just a few nights ago, I’d been sitting on the edge of my bed, staring blankly at yet another past-due tuition notice from my university. That was when I stumbled across the online ad: PRIVATE COMPANIONSHIP AGENCY. PREMIUM CLIENTS. EXCEPTIONAL COMPENSATION. DISCREET SERVICE.

I almost kept scrolling. But the phrase exceptional compensation stayed stuck in my head. When I finally called, I naively assumed it meant playing the part of an elegant plus-one to high-end dinners and corporate events.

Instead, the woman on the other end calmly explained that certain bookings required sexual companionship. She assured me everything was strictly private, with the payout scale depending entirely on the client’s specific requests and the duration of the date. Terrified, I thanked her and immediately hung up.

I spent the next forty-eight hours trapped in my own head, trying to outrun the idea. I kept telling myself I couldn’t go through with it, that there had to be another way out. I was young, I was educated, and I was entirely capable of finding a better solution if I just looked hard enough.

Then reality hit. First, the hospital called with an update on my mother’s treatment—and the staggering cost attached to it. Right after, the agency representative sent over the specific payment details for an upcoming booking.

The figure on my screen was absolutely outrageous.

It was enough to wipe out my mother's outstanding medical bills in a single stroke, settle a massive chunk of my past-due tuition, and finally let me pay back the friends I’d borrowed from. I sat there, staring at those numbers for nearly ten minutes, my heart hammering against my ribs. Then, with shaking fingers, I called the agency back.

It wasn't like I was completely innocent. I wasn’t a virgin; I’d been in a relationship during my senior year of high school. But that had ended badly, and between losing my father, watching my mother get sick, and drowning in the daily struggle to stay in college, romance had become a luxury I couldn't afford. I hadn’t been intimate with anyone in years, and tonight, I was facing a completely different reality.

And now, I was about to spend the night with a complete stranger. A man whose name I hadn’t even known until last night, when the agency emailed me the details crucial for the job. The message had been brief, containing only his name and his hotel reservation.

Just one night, Harper.

I repeated the words like a silent prayer as I approached the entrance of the restaurant.

A hostess stood beside the tall, heavy wooden doors, looking impeccably polished in an elegant black uniform. She greeted me with a seamless, professional smile.

"Good evening, miss. Do you have a reservation?"

"Yes." I cleared my throat, forcing my voice to remain steady. "It should be under Mr. Hayes."

She scrolled through the tablet in her hands, her smile widening slightly. "Of course. Your table is ready. Please, follow me."

I stepped through the doors behind her, and the moment I did, I realized I had completely underestimated what the agency meant by exceptional. The restaurant was absolutely breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceiling, fracturing the warm light and scattering it across the polished marble floors. Along the far wall, towering floor-to-ceiling windows framed a spectacular, dizzying view of the city skyline. Thousands of urban lights glittered below like a fallen constellation, while the dark silhouettes of skyscrapers pierced the midnight horizon.

The walls were wrapped in rich, dark wood paneling, punctuated by tasteful artwork framed in heavy gold leaf. Pristine white orchids bloomed from tall vases tucked between tables, and tiny candlelight flames flickered against crystal stemware and immaculate silver cutlery.

Soft, low-frequency instrumental music drifted through the air, hummed beneath the quiet murmur of elite conversation. Everything about this place screamed elegance and wealth. Even the servers moved with a distinct, practiced grace, gliding between tables like performers in a carefully choreographed ballet. The guests looked equally untouchable.

Women draped themselves in designer gowns and delicate jewelry, while the men sat tall in perfectly tailored suits, speaking in hushed, confident tones over meals that likely cost more than my weekly groceries.

Standing there in my tight, borrowed satin dress, a sudden, suffocating wave of self-consciousness hit me. I became painfully aware of every single thing around me. The dress I’d spent an agonizing hour preparing for suddenly felt completely inadequate, and my handbag looked painfully cheap compared to the pristine designer bags resting beside the other women’s chairs. I don’t belong here.

The realization hit me so naturally, so brutally, that I almost froze in my tracks. But then I forced myself to remember why I was standing in this room. I wasn’t here to impress anyone, nor was I here to make friends. I was here to survive.

The hostess led me toward a secluded alcove table right beside the glass. Two places had been set directly across from one another, complete with folded linen napkins, gleaming silverware, and a single white rose stretching out of a slender glass vase.

"Your guest should be joining you shortly," she murmured smoothly. "Would you like anything while you wait?"

"Just water, please," I managed to say, my throat tight.

"Certainly, miss."

She pulled out my chair with practiced courtesy before leaving me alone with my thoughts. I sat down carefully, smoothing the slick satin of my dress over my thighs before placing my cheap bag on the floor beside me.

The skyline view was undeniably beautiful, but I could barely even process it. A sudden, violent wave of panic washed over me as the reality of what I was about to do finally sank in. My heart rate spiked, hammering against my ribs. I frantically wiped my sweaty palms against my dress and tried to force air into my lungs.

Pressing my lips together in a tense line—a nervous habit I could never shake—I stared at the empty chair across from me. When a waiter appeared and set down my water, I murmured a quick thank you and took a long, desperate drink to stop my hands from shaking.

Suddenly, I noticed an abrupt change in the atmosphere. It wasn’t anything obvious at first. The low instrumental music kept drifting through the air, the guests kept murmuring over their expensive meals, and the waiters continued to glide between tables exactly as before. But an electric shift in the room's energy made the hairs on my arms stand up.

On pure impulse, my gaze snapped toward the entrance.

And then, I saw him.

Harper With his lips still pressed hard against mine, his hand tightened around my waist, erasing whatever tiny pocket of space remained between us. I reached up and gripped his broad shoulders, my fingers twisting into the expensive fabric as he pulled me away from the wall. He must have felt the sudden stiffness in my frame, because he paused, caught one of my fumbling hands, and guided it flat against his chest before devouring my mouth all over again. His shirt was incredibly warm beneath my palm. I could feel the powerful, steady rhythm of his breathing, and the sheer intimacy of being this close to him made a violent blush burn across my cheeks. When he finally pulled away, his eyes lingered on my face, dark and unreadable. "Come with me," he murmured. He didn't wait for an answer. He simply took my hand and led me toward the adjoining bedroom.I followed him in total silence, the sharp click of my high black heels against the floorboards sounding prominent in the quiet suite

Harper Although we had never met, I knew it was him instantly. He was commanding—tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing a sharp black suit that looked like it had been molded perfectly to his frame. His white shirt was left casually unbuttoned at the collar, completely omitting a tie, and his dark hair was styled neatly back from his forehead. He walked with an effortless, innate confidence, the kind that suggested he had never once in his life had to wonder whether he belonged in a room. His sun-bronzed skin contrasted sharply against the crisp white fabric of his shirt, and his deep, chocolate-brown eyes swept across the space with absolute assurance. Then, his gaze settled on me. The moment our eyes locked, the air left my lungs, and my fingers tightened around my water glass until my knuckles turned white. He was gorgeous. The thought flashed in my mind, involuntary and sudden, and I immediately slammed the door on it. I hadn't come here to admire the man, nor was I about to develo
