The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and white as the SUV cut through the rain-soaked streets at terrifying speed. Ava’s heart hammered against her ribs, each beat echoing the fear she refused to show.

Grant sat opposite her, calm as ever, his presence filling the space with an unsettling certainty.

“You look like someone who just realized her world was built on sand,” he said softly.

Ava tightened her grip on her phone. Caleb’s message still glowed on the screen.

Don’t believe him. The

Smoke still hung thick in the tunnels, curling around the twisted metal and shattered concrete. Ava’s chest heaved, her pulse pounding not just from fear but from the closeness of Caleb the way his body moved instinctively to shield hers, the warmth of his arms around her as they ran.Every nerve screamed. Fear and desire coiled together like a storm, impossible to separate. She could feel his heartbeat against her chest, steady and strong, and the brush of his fingers as he adjusted her grip on his arm sent a jolt through her.“Stay close!” Caleb hissed, glancing back. Sparks rained down from damaged panels above. The distant echo of Grant’s laughter chilled her spine.Ava’s sister appeared briefly ahead of them, mask on, but her hesitation was palpable. The device in her hand the key to Ava’s child glowed faintly. Ava’s heart sank. Could she trust her sister? Could she trust anyone?Suddenly, the walls trembled violently. An explosion rocked the tunnel far ahead, sending them both t

Ava’s legs gave way beneath her as the words sank in.“Not conceived naturally?” she whispered, her voice trembling. Her hands clutched her stomach instinctively. The life inside her felt suddenly heavier, almost foreign. Her father looked down, guilt etched deep into his lined face.“I didn’t know how to tell you,” he said quietly. “They… they told me it was for your protection.”Ava shook her head, disbelief and horror flooding her senses. “Protection?” she spat. “You call this protection? My life… my child… all of it?”Grant stepped closer, his calm, almost loving voice slicing through the chaos.“Your child is the ultimate evolution,” he said softly. “The culmination of years of planning, genetic optimization, and emotional design. You and Caleb were only the instruments.”Caleb’s hands clenched into fists. “Instruments? She’s a human being, not a tool!”Grant tilted his head, eyes glinting. “Precisely why she will surpass you both.”Ava felt her chest tighten. She stared at Caleb

The air in the tunnel felt charged, as if one wrong word could ignite an explosion.Ava stood between the three people who had defined her life Caleb, her sister, and Grant. Her heart was no longer just beating. It was burning.“You said you’d take everything I love,” Ava said quietly to Grant. Her voice was calm, but something dangerous lay beneath it.Grant studied her the way a strategist studies a battlefield.“Yes,” he said simply.Caleb stepped forward instantly.“You won’t touch her again,” he said.Grant turned his gaze to him.“You still don’t understand,” he said softly. “This isn’t about touching her. This is about shaping her.”Ava felt Caleb’s presence beside her.Close.Protective.Familiar.She could feel his warmth without him touching her, and it made her heart ache. Her sister moved slowly closer.“Ava,” she said softly. “Please listen to me.”Ava looked at her.For years, this had been the person she trusted more than anyone else. The person who wiped her tears when

The silence after Grant’s words was unbearable.Ava felt as though her entire life had been ripped open and laid bare under a harsh light.“You… arranged our divorce?” she whispered. Her voice sounded distant, as if it didn’t belong to her.Grant watched her closely, his gaze sharp, calculating.“Yes,” he said simply.Caleb took a step forward, rage flashing across his face.“You ruined our lives,” he said through clenched teeth.Grant tilted his head slightly.“Ruined?” he repeated softly. “No. I redirected them.”Ava felt her heartbeat in her ears. She remembered the arguments that had torn her marriage apart. The misunderstandings. The cold distance that had grown between her and Caleb. The secrets that had destroyed their trust. All of it… engineered? She looked at Caleb. His eyes were filled with pain, regret, and something deeper something that had never truly died.“Is it true?” she asked him quietly.Caleb didn’t answer immediately. His silence hurt more than words.“Yes,” he

The tunnel felt colder after Caleb’s words.Ava stood frozen, her mind refusing to accept what her ears had heard.Created.The word echoed in her head like a gunshot. Her sister her only family was not just her sister?Grant’s presence filled the narrow passageway like poison gas. He didn’t need to raise his voice or move closer. His calmness was more terrifying than anger.“Look at her face,” Grant said softly, his eyes never leaving Ava. “It’s beautiful when illusions die.”Ava clenched her fists.“You’re lying,” she said, but her voice trembled. “Both of you.”Caleb looked at her with something close to pain.“I wish I was,” he said quietly.Grant stepped forward, his shoes crunching lightly on the concrete floor. The guards remained behind him, silent, ready.“You always believed your life was ordinary,” Grant continued. “A poor childhood. A broken marriage. A painful divorce. A chance reunion. A miracle pregnancy.”He tilted his head slightly.“But nothing about you has ever be

THE MEETING THAT SHOULD NOT EXISTNight fell quietly over the city, but Ava felt no peace in the darkness. The private medical facility was too silent, too controlled. Every corridor felt watched, every shadow felt alive. Grant’s words replayed endlessly in her mind. Now I know where to find him.She lay still on the hospital bed, pretending to sleep while her thoughts raced. Somewhere beyond these walls, Caleb was alive and in danger because of her.Her phone vibrated again beneath the blanket.Another message.Caleb: Service tunnel behind the east wing. Midnight. Come alone.Ava’s heart hammered. She stared at the screen, knowing the risk. Grant could be watching her every move. Cameras, guards, hidden microphones this place belonged to him. Yet the thought of not going was unbearable. She slid out of bed quietly, ignoring the dull ache in her body. The hallway outside her room was dim, lit only by soft floor lights. She moved slowly, counting each step, listening for footsteps. At
