While she was in the university library, trying to catch up on a stack of assignments and research papers, her phone buzzed again. The name "Peter" flashed across the screen. She stared at it for a moment before pressing "Ignore." She didn’t have the energy to talk to anyone, especially not him. She’d been dodging his calls for days now. She wasn’t sure what he wanted or if it had anything to do with their past disagreements, but she wasn’t ready for that conversation—not today.

A few minutes later, another call came in—Frank Wright. This time, her pulse quickened. She knew better than to ignore Frank’s call. Her stomach knotted with a strange sense of urgency. She hesitated, debated whether to answer or not, but the call persisted. With a sigh, she picked up.

“Why the hell are you not attending the calls?” Frank’s voice burst through the speaker, loud and angry.

“I—I was in class,” she stammered, clutching the phone tighter.

“I need you at the mansion. Now.”

“I can’t,” she protested

Maxine walked up the path to her parents’ house with her arms folded tight against her chest, the cool evening breeze brushing against her skin. The encounter at the mansion site still pulsed like a fresh wound in her chest. Her heart hadn’t settled since she saw him—Thomas, or Damien, or whoever he truly was now. The man who had disappeared from her life without a word. The man who left her to raise a child on her own. The man who had returned with a different name and not a flicker of recognition in his eyes. She didn’t know whether to cry, scream, or run away from the memory. But instead, she put on a smile. A soft, polite one, like a curtain hiding the shambles behind it. She twisted the doorknob slowly and stepped inside, letting the warmth of the house embrace her.Inside, her parents were exactly where she hoped they would be—seated on the living room sofa with cups of tea in hand, the television running softly in the background. Some wildlife documentary played on mute, more f

The next morning, Elara woke to the relentless screech of her alarm clock. Its beeping blared through the silence of the room, dragging her from a dreamless sleep into a heavy, reluctant awareness. She blindly reached out and slammed her hand down on the device, silencing it with a groan. Her limbs ached with exhaustion, and her eyes burned with the weight of another sleepless night. For a fleeting moment, she considered turning off the day completely—pulling the covers over her head and drifting back into unconsciousness. But reality hit her before she could even shut her eyes again. The memory of last night surged into her mind like a tide swallowing the shore. Her heart raced at the thought—she had survived a near-death experience. Someone had tried to kill him. Right in front of her. And she had stood only feet away. Her eyes darted around the room, now lit by a soft, greyish morning hue. She was in her bed, the familiar walls of her home surrounding her like a protective shell. The house was silent when Maxine tucked Noah into bed. He curled beneath the blanket, his thumb brushing against his cheek, soft and sleepy-eyed. She kissed his forehead gently, whispering a promise that she’d be back soon. Just a quick check on the construction site, nothing more. Her parents were in the living room watching an old crime show, and when she told them she had to step out for a short while, they nodded without concern.Outside, the night had a sharp bite. A cold wind brushed against her as she stepped into the driveway, her jacket wrapped tightly around her. The sky was moonlit, unusually clear, and a soft hush hung in the air like an omen. As she walked toward her car, her gaze shifted to the mansion under construction across the street. That’s when she saw it—the black car.It was parked with its engine off, sleek and shadowed beneath a tree. The windows were tinted, and though she squinted, she couldn’t see anyone inside. Oddly, the car had been there before, at diff

The sun dipped low into the horizon as Maxine stepped out of the university building, clutching her graded assignment close to her chest. A warm breeze tugged at the hem of her cotton dress, and for the first time in a while, she allowed herself a small smile. She had done well. Her professor had not only praised her work but also recommended her for a special project commissioned for a charity. It was unpaid, yes, but Maxine knew the value of exposure. Every opportunity mattered when you were trying to claw your way up from the bottom. And she was determined—determined to give Noah the life he deserved. Her phone buzzed just as she passed under the shade of a large oak tree near the university gate. Peter’s name flashed on the screen. She picked up with a curious smile, wondering what made him call at this hour.“Hey, am I disturbing you?” Peter’s voice came through, laced with the usual hint of awkwardness he always had when asking for help.“No, I just came out of my classes. What’

It was a long day at the construction site. My legs were sore, my back ached, and all I wanted was to rest. But the moment I walked through the door of my parents’ house and saw Noah running toward me, his arms flailing, eyes shining with excitement, everything else faded.“Mama!” he called out, crashing into me like a miniature tornado.I dropped my bag and knelt down to catch him in my arms, lifting him despite the ache in my shoulders. His little arms wrapped around my neck, and for a few seconds, I held on tighter than usual. No matter how tired I was, his presence made everything better.“I missed you,” he said, burying his face into my shoulder.“I missed you more, baby.”He pulled away slightly, his cheeks puffed with mock seriousness. “Can we go to the park? Please? Elijah might be there!”“Elijah, huh?” I smiled, brushing his curly hair back. “Let’s go then. But only if you promise to let me sit on the bench for at least ten minutes without dragging me through the playground.
