Chapter 2

Author: Red Hot Fish
Isable's POV

Rhea told funny stories from her ski trips, and everyone listened intently.

Johnny kept piling food onto my plate until it was a small mountain. I didn't touch any of it, and he didn't notice.

After dinner, Rhea suggested checking out a new bar. Naturally, everyone followed.

She rode in Johnny's car and sat in the back, expecting me to pass her whatever she needed. "That's what the passenger seat is for, isn't it? Waiting on people," she said.

Johnny said nothing and let Rhea's dig slide.

She kept talking to Johnny about things from their childhood. I couldn't get a word in.

In the past, I would have asked who went by the nickname Tiger or what had actually happened by the river they were talking about. I used to ask questions about everything, trying to remember everyone's stories so I could feel like part of the circle.

But this time, I just sat quietly in my seat, barely reacting to anything.

When we got out of the car, Johnny ruffled my hair. "You did well this time. You learned not to interrupt. I'll give you an extra point."

My hand froze on the seatbelt buckle. "Johnny, I must have looked pretty ridiculous all those years, asking question after question, huh?"

Johnny's expression darkened. "I just praised you, and you're doing it again. Don't upset Rhea like you did at dinner, or you're getting a zero next year."

At the bar, Rhea seemed to be in a good mood. She told me to sit beside her in the middle of the sofa.

I didn't want to, but Glenn Burton pulled me over. "Rhea told you to sit here, so just sit down. Stop standing there looking so miserable. You're making it look like we're bullying you."

Rhea smiled and raised her glass. "Here's to Isabel. I hope she gets a perfect score next year and finally becomes one of us."

Nick Daly snorted. "Absolutely. Hopefully we'll be toasting at Johnny's wedding next year. Rhea already picked out her bridesmaid dress."

She hadn't just picked out her bridesmaid dress. She had even chosen my wedding dress.

Without telling me, she'd already drawn up several wedding plans and dragged Johnny along to rehearse the ceremony with her.

I had objected, but Johnny saw nothing wrong with it.

"Rhea thinks planning a wedding is fun, so what's the harm in letting her enjoy it? I told you, I care a lot about my friends' opinions. If you can't accept that, then forget it," he sneered.

I was naive back then. I thought a boyfriend who valued his friends so much had to be a good thing. If he treated his friends well, surely he'd treat me well too.

But I was wrong. Johnny only cared about his friends. I didn't matter to him.

I hadn't touched my glass, and Rhea looked a little hurt. "Isabel, did I say something wrong and upset you?"

Johnny quickly poured me a drink. "Come on, apologize to Rhea."

The glass was too full. Wine sloshed over the rim and onto my dress. The dress I'd planned to wear for our wedding photos was ruined.

I stared at him. "I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize?"

Johnny furrowed his brow. "Does that even matter? Just say something nice and apologize to Rhea. Then it'll be over."

Rhea sat with her eyes lowered, smiling faintly. She said nothing, just waiting for me to give in.

I didn't move. Johnny leaned toward me and whispered, "Just play along. Don't ruin everyone's mood."

Every eye was on me. It was hard to breathe.

My hands shook as I downed the whole glass. The alcohol burned all the way down my throat.

I clutched my stomach and doubled over. "I'm sorry," I forced out.

Only then did Rhea's expression relax. When she was happy, everyone else was happy too.

Glenn even praised me for being a good sport. "I'll give you a few extra points next year. I won't let you get a zero again."

In the past, I would have been thrilled to finally get their approval. Now I couldn't even manage a smile.

They went back to drinking and chatting, quickly forgetting the whole incident.

Nick shoved me aside to make room for Rhea, and my back slammed against the marble counter. My face went pale, and I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.

He raised an eyebrow without a hint of apology. "Rhea needs room. Deal with it."

Isabel's POVI threw myself into my work and focused on healing. My wounds were closing, and the bruises were fading. I was learning to make peace with the person I used to be.At one of my sessions, my therapist asked how I'd been sleeping lately.I smiled. "Better than before."The pain was still there, but I refused to let it hold me back. Some people tried to talk me into going back. "Johnny has changed so much. He gave up his friends for you and is completely devoted to you now. Why can't you give him another chance? And what if the next person turns out to be just as much trouble? You might regret it."I hid my weariness and answered calmly, "But the hurt he caused me was real. I can't make the same mistake twice."The good things he was doing for me now couldn't erase what I'd been through.I had chosen to seek justice to protect the person I was back then. And I had chosen to leave to give the person I was becoming a chance at a better life. After dinner, I went for a

His texts went unanswered as well.Dejected, he slid down the front door until he was sitting on the floor. His eyes drifted to the group photos. Isabel wasn't in any of them. She used to hover at the edge of the frame, close enough to be cropped out with a single swipe. He remembered coming home after gatherings to find her sitting on the couch, quiet for a long time. Even when he tried to talk to her, she wouldn't answer. She never saved the group photos, either. He had always assumed that she was just too sensitive. Now he understood that every time she went quiet, she had been swallowing something he never bothered to ask about. His hands trembled as he struggled to keep his emotions under control. He couldn't stop thinking about the necklace and how important it was to Isabel. After some searching, he finally

Isabel's POVI dabbed at my eyes with a tissue. "Yes, I'm going to file a police report."Johnny panicked. "Can't we settle this privately? Once the police get involved, everyone's future could be affected. Please, for my sake, let it go."I scoffed. "That's what you're worried about? Everyone's future? Or you mean your reputation."He had said almost the same thing to me before when he made me apologize to his friends. I would never forget the mocking and disbelieving look on his face that day."I'm not throwing a tantrum. I'm just done letting people hurt me," I said.I had been the group's punching bag, the one they all bullied and humiliated. No one had ever stood up for me, so I would do it myself now.Was I scared? Of course I was. I woke up from nightmares in the middle of the night, and every time I touched the broken necklace, my eyes would sting with tears. But being sad wouldn't change anything. Being afraid wouldn't either. The day I was discharged, I handed over a

Isabel's POVWhen I fell down those stairs that night, I thought I was going to die. It was the first time I'd ever been so honest with Johnny about my feelings. He froze. He had never expected me to be so direct. In the past, I had always shaken my head and said I wasn't upset or angry, even when I was hurting.I swallowed hard against the lump in my throat. "I'm not going to let it go."The guilt on Johnny's face instantly gave way to uncertainty. He asked, "What do you mean?"My fingers curled slightly as I reached up and touched the bandage on my head."To you, this was just a few friends taking a joke too far. But to me, they humiliated me in front of everyone, made jokes about my parents, and took the only thing my parents had left me."Do you know what I was thinking about when I fell down those stairs? The only thing on my mind was making sure I kept my parents' keepsake safe."My fingers trembled as I touched the damaged necklace through the plastic bag."After they d

Isabel's POVIt was Johnny. His voice was hoarse, with a panic I had never heard from him before. The group who had been laughing and shoving each other moments ago froze, their faces pale. Johnny nearly fell on the way down. When he reached me, he dropped hard to his knees on the cold floor.Through the fog, I felt my cheek against the floor, blood seeping from a cut near my temple. I was barely breathing."Wake up." Johnny's hands shook as his fingertips touched me.The man who was always so composed was terrified. "Don't... Don't scare me. Isabel... Open your eyes. Look at me."His hands hovered helplessly above me, not knowing where it was safe to touch.Rhea, who had been laughing just moments ago, stood at the top of the stairs. Her voice was small. "We were just joking around. Who knew Isabel would get so worked up and fall like that?"The others hurried to defend themselves."Yeah, we were just playing with a necklace. Is it really that big a deal?""Isabel was alre

Isabel's POVThat day, Johnny and I had a huge fight, and neither of us was willing to back down.He said it was just a dog. I asked him, "Would you say that to Rhea?"He was speechless. We both knew the answer. When he left, he slammed the door so hard the whole house seemed to shake.I found someone I trusted to adopt the dog and sent it far away, where Johnny could never give it to Rhea. When he came home later and saw the dog was gone, he never asked where it went. He simply dropped the subject, and I pretended as if nothing had happened.Lost in the memory, I said nothing, and my silence looked like an admission to everyone else. The group laughed and crowded around me like sharks that smelt blood."No wonder you've always had trouble fitting in. Turns out no one ever loved you growing up," Selena taunted.Nick smirked. "Good thing we're here to fix that antisocial streak of yours."Rhea smiled, but her eyes stayed cold. "Who knows? Maybe Isabel is hiding something inte
