Chapter 3

Author: Red Hot Fish
Isabel's POV

Selena Goldstein snickered and rolled her eyes at Nick. "Why bother with her? She can't even sit steady. Such a klutz."

The alcohol was starting to hit me, and my head felt unbearably heavy.

Everyone's voices sounded muffled, as if I were listening through water.

Rhea looked over at me, as though she'd just remembered something. "Oh, right. About the rating game just now, was what Isabel said actually true?" She turned to the others. "Do you really believe she's still a virgin?"

Glenn playfully nudged Johnny and teased, "Yeah. Did she make that up just to please you?"

"She says she's never been with anyone. She'd better be telling the truth. My buddy isn't going to marry some girl who's been around."

They burst out laughing.

Johnny's face fell. "Cut it out." He covered Rhea's ears with his hands and gave the others a warning look. "Don't let Rhea hear this kind of trash."

It did nothing to stop them.

I sat frozen, feeling utterly humiliated and embarrassed.

Once they had laughed enough, Glenn followed up with another question. "Is it because your parents were super strict with you that you're so uptight?"

Rhea looked at me in confusion. "Wait, aren't you an orphan, Isabel? Johnny told me your parents died when you were little, and you were left all alone. That must have been so hard."

The thing I didn't want to talk about had been laid bare in front of everyone.

Johnny had shared something deeply personal about me with Rhea like it was some funny story. He seemed to have forgotten that when I first told him about my family, his eyes had filled with tears before mine did.

My finger traced the silver necklace around my neck. Two rings hung from it. They were the last things my parents had left me.

I'd once imagined standing at my parents' graves with Johnny, slipping their rings onto our fingers. I wanted to tell them I'd found someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

Yet year after year, I got a zero, so that visit never happened. Now the regret had turned into relief. I was glad I'd never taken him there. They would have been heartbroken to see me with someone like him.

I had never told them about my family, not even to win points in the rating game.

My dad had died in an accident, and my mom passed away a few years later. I grew up on government aid and the kindness of neighbors.

My head was still foggy from the alcohol. I tried to speak, but before I could, the whole group erupted.

"Wow, you should've told us your parents were gone. We would've understood why you're so sensitive and difficult."

"But seriously, are you cursed or something? Don't bring bad luck to Johnny after marrying him."

Rhea frowned. "Losing someone you love is awful. I was heartbroken for months when my dog died. It's not like Isabel chose this."

Everyone immediately softened their tone and turned to comfort her.

"Rhea, we're so sorry. That's why we never bring up dogs around you. We don't want to dredge up painful memories."

Johnny reached over and gently wiped beneath Rhea's eyes, even though I saw no tears on her face. "I'll keep looking. If I find one that looks more like her, I'll get it for you."

In fact, Johnny had already found a dog that looked almost exactly like the one Rhea had lost.

It was a stray I'd brought home myself. One of its legs was broken, and it had a high fever for a week. I stayed by its side until it recovered.

Caring for it brought back one of my few happy childhood memories. My parents and I were hiking in the hills, and a puppy followed us the whole way, looking up at us with hopeful eyes.

I decided to keep the stray and did everything I could to get it the care it needed.

Johnny even got jealous, saying I'd forgotten about him the moment I got the dog.

But despite his complaints, he took on most of the work of caring for it, and he was especially eager to train it. I thought that meant he had accepted the dog.

Then he said casually, "Once it's trained, I'll give it to Rhea, so she'll stop crying over her dog."

Isabel's POVI threw myself into my work and focused on healing. My wounds were closing, and the bruises were fading. I was learning to make peace with the person I used to be.At one of my sessions, my therapist asked how I'd been sleeping lately.I smiled. "Better than before."The pain was still there, but I refused to let it hold me back. Some people tried to talk me into going back. "Johnny has changed so much. He gave up his friends for you and is completely devoted to you now. Why can't you give him another chance? And what if the next person turns out to be just as much trouble? You might regret it."I hid my weariness and answered calmly, "But the hurt he caused me was real. I can't make the same mistake twice."The good things he was doing for me now couldn't erase what I'd been through.I had chosen to seek justice to protect the person I was back then. And I had chosen to leave to give the person I was becoming a chance at a better life. After dinner, I went for a

Third-Person POVJohnny called Isabel over and over, but none of the calls went through. When he realized she'd blocked him, he tried calling from different numbers. His texts went unanswered as well.Dejected, he slid down the front door until he was sitting on the floor. His eyes drifted to the group photos. Isabel wasn't in any of them. She used to hover at the edge of the frame, close enough to be cropped out with a single swipe. He remembered coming home after gatherings to find her sitting on the couch, quiet for a long time. Even when he tried to talk to her, she wouldn't answer. She never saved the group photos, either. He had always assumed that she was just too sensitive. Now he understood that every time she went quiet, she had been swallowing something he never bothered to ask about. His hands trembled as he struggled to keep his emotions under control. He couldn't stop thinking about the necklace and how important it was to Isabel. After some searching, he finally

Isabel's POVI dabbed at my eyes with a tissue. "Yes, I'm going to file a police report."Johnny panicked. "Can't we settle this privately? Once the police get involved, everyone's future could be affected. Please, for my sake, let it go."I scoffed. "That's what you're worried about? Everyone's future? Or you mean your reputation."He had said almost the same thing to me before when he made me apologize to his friends. I would never forget the mocking and disbelieving look on his face that day."I'm not throwing a tantrum. I'm just done letting people hurt me," I said.I had been the group's punching bag, the one they all bullied and humiliated. No one had ever stood up for me, so I would do it myself now.Was I scared? Of course I was. I woke up from nightmares in the middle of the night, and every time I touched the broken necklace, my eyes would sting with tears. But being sad wouldn't change anything. Being afraid wouldn't either. The day I was discharged, I handed over a

Isabel's POVWhen I fell down those stairs that night, I thought I was going to die. It was the first time I'd ever been so honest with Johnny about my feelings. He froze. He had never expected me to be so direct. In the past, I had always shaken my head and said I wasn't upset or angry, even when I was hurting.I swallowed hard against the lump in my throat. "I'm not going to let it go."The guilt on Johnny's face instantly gave way to uncertainty. He asked, "What do you mean?"My fingers curled slightly as I reached up and touched the bandage on my head."To you, this was just a few friends taking a joke too far. But to me, they humiliated me in front of everyone, made jokes about my parents, and took the only thing my parents had left me."Do you know what I was thinking about when I fell down those stairs? The only thing on my mind was making sure I kept my parents' keepsake safe."My fingers trembled as I touched the damaged necklace through the plastic bag."After they d

Isabel's POVIt was Johnny. His voice was hoarse, with a panic I had never heard from him before. The group who had been laughing and shoving each other moments ago froze, their faces pale. Johnny nearly fell on the way down. When he reached me, he dropped hard to his knees on the cold floor.Through the fog, I felt my cheek against the floor, blood seeping from a cut near my temple. I was barely breathing."Wake up." Johnny's hands shook as his fingertips touched me.The man who was always so composed was terrified. "Don't... Don't scare me. Isabel... Open your eyes. Look at me."His hands hovered helplessly above me, not knowing where it was safe to touch.Rhea, who had been laughing just moments ago, stood at the top of the stairs. Her voice was small. "We were just joking around. Who knew Isabel would get so worked up and fall like that?"The others hurried to defend themselves."Yeah, we were just playing with a necklace. Is it really that big a deal?""Isabel was alre

Isabel's POVThat day, Johnny and I had a huge fight, and neither of us was willing to back down.He said it was just a dog. I asked him, "Would you say that to Rhea?"He was speechless. We both knew the answer. When he left, he slammed the door so hard the whole house seemed to shake.I found someone I trusted to adopt the dog and sent it far away, where Johnny could never give it to Rhea. When he came home later and saw the dog was gone, he never asked where it went. He simply dropped the subject, and I pretended as if nothing had happened.Lost in the memory, I said nothing, and my silence looked like an admission to everyone else. The group laughed and crowded around me like sharks that smelt blood."No wonder you've always had trouble fitting in. Turns out no one ever loved you growing up," Selena taunted.Nick smirked. "Good thing we're here to fix that antisocial streak of yours."Rhea smiled, but her eyes stayed cold. "Who knows? Maybe Isabel is hiding something inte
