Chapter 4

Author: Ava
Elsa messaged me, smug and triumphant: she would be spending a “wonderful night” with Ethan tonight, so of course, he wouldn’t be coming back.

I let out a bitter smile and didn’t bother replaying the videos she’d sent.

What for? The truth was already louder than any footage.

Luckily, the pup slept soundly through the night.

His peaceful breathing comforted me more than I expected.

It kept me from panicking. Maybe even allowed me to fall asleep quickly.

But at 3 A.M., another message from Elsa woke me up:

[Alpha Ethan told me my pup will be the next alpha—and I will be Luna. Isn’t it humiliating for you to still be here?]

Strangely, my heart stayed calm.

Because deep down, I’d already expected this.

There was no need to scream, no need to make a scene.

I silenced my phone and turned back to sleep.

Nothing about this hurt anymore. It was just... numb.

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of Ethan’s gentle voice echoing in the room.

“Mia, our pup’s New Moon Day is about to begin. All the clans are waiting for us.”

He spoke like nothing happened—like he hadn’t torn everything apart the night before.

He’d adapted to this new role faster than I could’ve imagined.

He even cooked breakfast for me and prepared formula for the pup, his hands skillful and practiced—as if fatherhood came naturally to him. He smiled, proud and gentle.

It almost looked perfect. Almost.

Maybe they would all be happier without me.

When we arrived at the ritual temple, all the werewolf leaders were already waiting in silence.

Among all the guests, only Ethan and Elsa's eyes held genuine joy—for the pup.

I felt suffocated by the layers of rituals, the chants, the pretentious blessings.

I lowered my head and glanced at my watch, pretending to need to make a phone call—just to escape for a moment.

But before I could leave, Ethan suddenly grabbed my hand and slipped a ring onto my finger.

“Mia, wear it. Let’s pretend it was never lost. It still represents our bond, just as strong as the day we first met.”

A numb, hollow smile tugged at my lips.

But inside, I could hear my wolf whispering:

Ethan, we can never go back to how things were. Not anymore.

I calmed my wolf down and called the werewolf supply house and ordered a complete ignition set—fire starters, accelerants, everything. I wanted to be ready to burn it all if needed.

Just as I ended the call, two shadows darted toward the far corner of the temple.

Then I heard that familiar soft, syrupy voice—Elsa.

“Don’t you love trying something new every time?” she giggled sweetly, her voice echoing through the holy stone walls.

“What about doing it here, right next to your mate?”

Ethan was already breathless, his wolf so desperate that he began tearing at his clothes like he couldn’t wait another second.

“Keep quiet,” he growled lowly. “And listen... I want a second pup.”

Their laughter blurred in my ears, but what cut the deepest was Elsa’s defiant gaze—she looked straight at me, from across the temple, like she wanted me to see.

My body stiffened.

Then my tears broke free, falling uncontrollably.

The wind outside howled like knives, slashing straight through my heart. One cut at a time.

Then came the messages. Like knives laced with sugar.

[Mia, we’ll go hunting after this. Wait for me.]

[And don’t lose your new ring again—this one’s been blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, sanctified through the witch’s hands.]

[What if I miss you for just a second? What then?]

How ironic. How cruel.

The same man who was now buried in another she-wolf's arms whispered sweet nothings to me—as if nothing had happened.

...

When I returned to my den, I found my phone overflowing with a storm of messages from Ethan.

I looked up—only to see a roaring fire blazing in front of me, its flames burning hot against my cheeks.

Without hesitation, I forwarded all of Elsa’s messages and videos to Ethan.

Then, I block my mind links and turned off my phone.

My gaze dropped to the ring still resting on my finger. I touched it—just once—then tore it off and hurled it into the flames.

It cracked against the firewood and vanished in the blaze.

I picked up my luggage, ready to leave this place and everything it carried.

But just as I reached for the door, a loud, frantic pounding came from the other side.

When I looked up and saw that it was Ethan, the smile on my face instantly vanished. But the wolf didn’t seem to care. He handed his card to the cashier as if nothing had happened.Even from a distance, I could smell the strong scent of alcohol on him.Ethan was shaking with nervousness, unable to even look me in the eye. After hesitating for a long while, he finally asked,“Are you… okay?”I already knew he had sent his commander after me, so I wasn’t all that surprised. But that didn’t stop the tightness in my chest—I didn’t want to share another breath of air with him.I replied calmly,“Since you’ve found out the truth, then you should also know that I never want to see you again.”Ethan nodded as if it were only natural, then suddenly began to sob.Sniffling, he took the card back from the cashier and stuffed it into his pocket.“Mia—no, my Luna,” he said.“Do you know how happy I was when I heard you were in Shadow Pack yesterday?”“I wanted nothing more than to rush to your side

  • Only When I Died Did He Go Insane   Chapter 9

Ever since I arrived in Shadow Pack, life has moved at a dizzying pace.My straightforward professor even joked that I’d been a pampered rich Luna for too long and didn’t understand the struggles of ordinary people. But as a werewolf herbal researcher, I gave it my all—starting from scratch again.Still, I was carrying a little one in my belly, and the morning sickness had been rough.“Mia, don’t overwork yourself. You’ve got to think of the baby,” a coworker said to me with concern. Then she asked,“I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but… raising a pup alone is incredibly hard. Are you really sure about this?”I curved my lips into a smile and lowered my head to gently rub my slightly rounded belly, nodding with determination.Whether I was a wealthy Luna or just an ordinary working she-wolf, I believed one thing with all my heart: a mother is always strong.Just then, the research institute announced a new project—a perfect opportunity for me to establish myself here.By the time I

“Mia hasn’t come for her prenatal checkup in a long time. I wonder how she’s doing now.”“Shh! You didn’t hear? Mia is actually Alpha Ethan’s mate. No one knows whether she’s alive or dead—don’t let others hear you talk about this.”Hearing this, it felt like a sledgehammer struck Ethan’s chest. His eyes turned red, and he rushed over in a few quick steps, demanding,“What did you just say?”“My mate, Mia—she’s pregnant?!”The nurses immediately realized they had said too much, but they had no choice but to explain under pressure.“Luna specifically instructed us not to tell you about the pregnancy. We really had no choice…”Tears welled up in Ethan’s eyes as he choked back emotion and forced the nurses to show him the medical records.Left with no alternative, the nurses led him to the examination room. Inside were ultrasound images from my prenatal visits.Ethan stared in disbelief at the image in his hand, stunned into silence. He gazed at it for a long time as tears streamed down h

When Ethan opened his eyes again, he immediately checked his phone. There were over ninety-nine unread messages—but not a single one was from me.He still couldn’t accept it. I was still missing, without a trace.Just as he tried to sit up, Elsa suddenly entered his sight.“Alpha Ethan, you’re not supposed to get out of bed yet,” she said gently. “The doctor said you still need to be under observation.”Ethan stared coldly at the woman in front of him. A surge of disgust welled up inside him.“Do you know how sick I feel just looking at you right now?”“Get out. Now.”Elsa forced down the irritation in her heart, like she had made up her mind.“She’s already dead. Torturing yourself like this won’t bring her back, and no one’s going to feel sorry for you.”“When you recover, let’s get married. Wouldn’t it be nice for the three of us to be a family?”Ethan instantly latched onto her words, eyes widening in disbelief.“What did you say?”“Who said Mia is dead? What nonsense are you spout

Ethan clutched his phone tightly, clinging to the last shred of hope that Mia might reply. He lifted his eyes in despair—the flames were growing fiercer, smoke so thick it burned his eyes.Several werewolf police officers stayed close around him, afraid he’d try to rush back in like he did earlier.Ethan’s heart pounded violently. There was no way he could just stand there and do nothing. As soon as he saw firefighters coming out of the villa, he dashed forward."Where—where’s my mate? You had so many people go in—she has to be found, right?""Huh?"The firefighters exchanged glances and slowly shook their heads."The blaze was too intense. Our crew searched the interior, but there was no sign of your wife. Only two possibilities—either she was never inside, or..."That sentence completely shattered Ethan.Like a madman, he grabbed the werewolf firefighter by the collar, eyes bloodshot with rage."She’s not dead! The next second, the furious pounding on the door grew louder and more desperate, the soundproof panels unable to block it out."Mia!""Mia, are you in there?! Please, I’m begging you, just say something!"…I had locked the door. Calm and unhurried, I turned up the flames. Then, I slipped out through the hidden passage behind the rear window.Funny, really—Ethan had used this very passage just two nights ago. That’s how I discovered it.I ran all the way to the main road, where the getaway car I arranged in advance was already waiting. The driver didn’t rush. Instead, he leaned forward, craning his neck to watch the scene with a gossipy grin."Tsk tsk… what a shame. That whole den’s gone up in flames. The alpha must be heartbroken."I followed his gaze.Smoke billowed into the sky, thick and black. The fire devoured the den.Ethan was there.Despite everything, he screamed like a madman, trying to charge into the fire. But the blaze was too intense.People swarmed him, holding him bac
