Chapter 1

Grace's pov

I was very tired when I returned home. My legs were numb with all the work, and I wanted nothing more than falling dead on my bed.

"Mom I'm home," I announced plopping down on the couch but did not get any reply. Strange.

"Mom?" Normally she is always waiting for me in the living room with something nice prepared to eat.

I checked the whole house but did not see her anywhere. But then my eyes landed on a note that was lying on the table.

'Gone for grocery shopping honey. Will be back in a few.' Well that explains why the house was so quiet.

I took a shower and came out to do my assignment. It was actually tough attending highschool and working at the same time. I was almost done when the shrilling ringtone of my phone distracted me. Sighing, I answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Is this Grace Miller speaking?" The voice from the other side asked.

"Yes. How may I help you?"

"We are very sorry to announce that your mother got into an accident and she is currently at the hospital," my mouth hung open at the news as a tear escaped my eye. I left everything and dashed to hail a cab and reach the hospital.

"I'm looking for a lady named Maria Miller!" I spoke as soon as I reached the reception.

"She's in the emergency room right now," the receptionist informed me as I took off for the emergency room.

The doctors came out only to give me the most dreadful news of my entire life.

"We are sorry Miss Miller. We couldn't save her," and I collapsed, not believing I was alone.

All alone.

"No!" I whispered. "Noo!!!" I screamed as my eyes flooded with tears. I barged inside the emergency room to see my mother lying peacefully on the bed. Her eyes were closed and she was finally having the much awaited rest she deserved.

I broke down at the sight. Cupping her face wishing for her to come back to me. But nothing. Nothing came out of my mouth.

I jolted up from the horrible dream. More like a memory. Sweat beads covered my forehead as I took in my surroundings. Everything was normal. Me alone in the middle of my bedroom.

I sighed knowing no matter how much I try, I wouldn't be able to come out of it. It has been two years but I can't get rid of this memory.

It was 10 in the night. I couldn't believe I slept for so long. Maybe I was extra tired from work today. I planned on only having an hour nap but ended up sleeping for most of the day.

My phone rang and I gave it an annoying look.

"Hello?" My voice came out more tired than usual as I answered the call.

"Is this Grace Miller?"

"Yes "

"I have called to inform you that you have been selected for the P.A post for the CEO of Knight Co. We are expecting to see you tomorrow at 8." The lady finished.

"Ok I'll be there. Thank you"

"Have a nice day" I hung up after that.

Can't believe I finally got a chance to have a stable Job. After all, my 22 years of life have been nothing but a big disappointment. Getting separated from your father and a loving brother. Then getting your mother taken away forever. Not having enough money to pay your bills. Not having quality education to continue my dream. Living in a cramped low class area.

I just want my good days to come. I can't handle all of this alone anymore. I'm tired.

One day! It will all happen one day. And with that hope, I went back to sleep once again with an empty stomach.

Feeling nervous standing in front of the biggest businesses Cooperation was not what I imagined I would be doing in my life. Finally making my decision, I made my way into the skyscraper. On the way I couldn't help but admire the posh interior. The guards opened the door for me and wished me a good morning. I nodded my head in acknowledgement.

I made my way to the reception and asked for the directions.

"You might be Grace Miller?" The sweet reception lady asked me and I nodded.

"Hi sweetheart. I'm Valentina. I'll show you to your cabin," she smiled at me and I could help but return it.

We took the elevator as we reached the top floor of the building. Finally coming out I was met by silence on the floor.

"Why is it so quiet here ?" I was curious.

"Oh it is just that Mr. Knight works alone here on this floor and likes peace. Only his P.A's office and his own office are here on this floor." I nodded.

"What happened to the previous P.A?"

"Well let's just say that Mr Knight has a temper which is hard to control. He can't deal with women at all because he knows they are nothing but trouble, thus he always had men working as his P.A. He also hates traitors and his last P.A just happened to be one so obviously he fired him, not before destroying him." Her words did not help me to relax. If anything, I got more tense. He never had any woman work for him earlier. What if he fired me because I'm a woman? God please help me.

"Why did they hire me if he want men working as his P.A?" I asked once again.

"Well you just happen to fulfill the criteria of everything that was required for the job. And we had been having problems hiring people for him as they are too scared to work for him," I nodded in understanding.

She showed me my office and told me that Mr Knight would call me if he needed me. I nodded as she left.

Sighing I plopped down on my chair and started going through some papers that were on my desk. They were mainly about his schedule and meetings.

I heard the intercom ring and picked it up.

"Come to my office now!" Was all that came in a rough and angry voice, before the line went silent. Slightly scared, I picked up some of the papers that were on my desk and made it to Mr Knight's office. I knocked the door lightly before hearing a gruff 'come in'.

I made my way in to see the man endorsed in his work. He was busy scribbling something on some sheets before finally looking up to face me. A frown made its way upon his face as he took me in.

He raised an eyebrow before asking.

"Who are you?" His voice sent chills down my spine. He was very good looking and I had to give it to him for that. But looks do not matter if a person has a rotten personality.

"I am your new P.A Sir," I replied hesitantly.

"What?" He scowled. It was obviously a rhetorical question. He picked up his receiver and rang someone up.

"What is a girl doing in my office and claiming to be my P.A?" He sounded angry and talked as if I was not even in the room. "Do you not know my rules?" He waited as the person explained on the other line. He sighed after hearing what he had to say. He definitely looked annoyed and I could make out he was not happy with me being his P.A. He squeezed his eyes shut for two seconds before deciding to speak up again. "Tell me my schedule." And went back to writing whatever he was.

"You are clear until lunch. You then have a meeting with the owner of the Miller Co. at 2," he nodded.

"Get me a coffee. And don't be late next time!"

I scowled, wondering how was I late? I came exactly at 8. Maybe because by the time I reached his office it was 8:05. But then it was just 5 minutes.

I however left his office before asking if he needed anything else, only to get a gruff No.

I asked for directions before finally reaching my destination and started making him a cup of coffee. After delivering him his coffee, I went back to working.

It was lunch time thus I made my way to the cafeteria where I was shortly joined by Valentina.

"So how is it going so far?" She asked, sipping her tea as I took a bite from my sandwich.

"It's alright. I could see what you meant by him having anger issues." We both chuckled lightly.

"He is not bad really. It is just that he requires honesty and perfection from his employees all the time" she explained.

"Tell me more about yourself Grace," she requested cheerfully.

"There is nothing really so interesting about me. I'm just a normal 22 year old girl living alone trying to work and earn for myself." I shrugged while taking another bite.

"Hmm.. maybe you will open up in time but don't worry. I'll tell you about myself. So I'm 38 years old, happily married and mother of two children. An elder son and a daughter." She finished. This reminded me of my family. If only we were happy like hers.

"That's great!" I smiled. We talked a little more where she spoke of her son and daughter's weird habits. She was a really nice lady to be around. We went back to our work when lunch was over.

I was busy preparing Mr Knight's schedule for tomorrow when the intercom rang again.

"Hello" I spoke as I answered it.

"I'm leaving for the meeting. Your presence won't be required." And the line went dead. He is one strange man. With that I worked till it was finally time to leave. A weird first day for work must I add.
