FRAGILE HOPE

The weeks continued in their painful rhythm. Adrian had fully withdrawn. He no longer tried to bridge the gap between us. Our interactions were brief and cold, limited to passing each other in the hallway or the kitchen.

One morning, as I prepared my coffee, he walked in.

“Morning,” he said flatly, not looking at me.

“Morning,” I replied.

He poured his own coffee. “Sophia had some strong ideas for the next quarter. The board loved them. You would have liked them if you were still there.”

I didn’t respond. He finished his coffee and left without another word.

At Silverline, things were still difficult, but a small ray of hope appeared. One investor, Mr Rayn Cole, a quiet philanthropist who believed in sustainable technology decided to stay.

Ethan burst into my office one afternoon, grinning.

“Evelyn, you won’t believe this,” he said. Ryan Reed just confirmed he’s staying in. He said your strategy presentation convinced him. He’s committing 50 million. This is a huge Evelyn. I knew I didn't make a mistake when I chose you.

I felt a wave of relief. “That’s great news. We can use this to attract others.”

Ethan smiled at me warmly. “This is because of you. Your work, your persistence. You’re turning this ship around.”

His praise felt genuine. Over the following days, we made small progress. I secured two more small commitments from independent funds. It wasn’t a flood, but it was movement.

“You’re a miracle worker,” Ethan told me during a late evening session. “I don’t know what I’d do without you here. You’ve brought hope back to this place.”

He looked at me with clear admiration. “And not just professionally. You’re… special, Evelyn. I hope you know that.”

I smiled. “Thank you, Ethan. I needed to hear that.”

And I respect you for that. It was a welcome contrast to the cold silence at home.

Meanwhile, Sophia’s sabotage continued. She reached out to several of my contacts, spreading doubts. But with Rayn Cole's commitment, we had a small buffer.

One evening, as I returned home, Adrian was in the living room reviewing documents.

“Evelyn,” he said without looking up, I heard you’ve been struggling at your startup. What are you really starting up? If you want to come back, the door is still open. No hard feelings.”

I paused. “No. Thank you. He shrugged. “Suit yourself. Sophia’s ideas are landing well. The board is happy.”

His indifference hurt, but I went to the guest room without replying.

Emma called again the next day.

“Sis,” she said cheerfully, “I heard you’re still clinging to that failing startup. And Adrian is spending so much time with Sophia now. Everyone’s saying they look good together. I told you this marriage wouldn’t last, remember?”

I sighed. “Emma, I’m busy.”

“Just looking out for you,” she replied. You had the perfect life and threw it away. Now look at you.”

I ended the call.

At Silverline, the small progress continued. Rayn Cole even introduced us to a couple of his contacts. We secured another bigger investment.

“You did it again,” Ethan said, leaning against my desk. “You’re the heart of this company now. I don’t say this lightly, Evelyn… I’m really glad you’re here. Not just for work. For you.”

“I’m glad too,” I replied softly.

That evening, Adrian was out again with Sophia. I sat in the guest room, reviewing the latest numbers. Silverline was still struggling, but we had a little breathing room.

My phone buzzed. It was Ethan.

Ethan: You’re stronger than all of this. Let me take you to dinner soon. No pressure. Just want to see you smile.

I smiled at the message.

But as I set my phone down, another message arrived from an unknown number.

Unknown: Enjoy your little victory. It won’t last. Watch how quickly I take everything from you. You were warned.

The threat was clear. Sophia wasn’t done.

And with Adrian spending more time with her, believing I had simply given up, the fight felt even harder.

I closed my eyes, wondering how much longer I could hold on before everything truly broke.

THE BIG DAYThe conference hall buzzed with energy as I stepped inside. My heart was pounding, but I kept my head high. Today was the big presentation for the Global Dynamics contract. Silverline versus Harrison Group. I had spent weeks preparing for this moment, and I wasn’t going to let nerves ruin it.I found our assigned table near the front. Ethan was already there, looking nervous but determined. Ryan arrived shortly after, giving me an encouraging smile.“You’ve got this,” he said quietly. “Just show them what we’ve built.”I nodded. “I will.”Across the room, I saw the Harrison Group team. Sophia stood confidently at their table, reviewing notes. Adrian was beside her, tall and imposing in his tailored suit. He scanned the room with sharp eyes, clearly looking for someone. He didn’t know I was here. He didn’t know I was the one behind Silverline’s strategy. The moderator called the session to order. Harrison Group presented first.Sophia walked to the stage with smooth confide

  • Only after I left    The proposal

The proposal I was at my desk in the Silverline loft when the email came in. My heart beat a little faster as I clicked it open. Global Dynamics had sent their initial feedback on the proposals. The subject line was clear: Proposal Status Update.I read the first few lines and felt the air leave my lungs.Silverline Technologies Proposal Not Selected for Advancement. They thanked us for our submission and praised some aspects of our innovation, but ultimately said we lacked the proven scale and long-term reliability they required for a contract of this size. Harrison Group’s proposal had been accepted and moved to the next stage.I sat back in my chair, staring at the screen. The words blurred for a second. We had poured so much into this. Late nights, revisions, every idea I could pull together. And it wasn’t enough.Ethan walked over, his face already telling me he had seen it too.“Rejected,” he said quietly, sitting on the edge of my desk. “Harrison Group advanced. They cited our

  • Only after I left    Behind closed doors

BEHIND CLOSED DOORSVictor Harrison’s private office felt like a different world. The heavy oak desk, the deep leather chairs, and the panoramic view of the city made it clear this was where real power lived. He sat behind the desk like he owned every inch of the building because in many ways, he still did.Sophia sat across from him, legs crossed elegantly, her posture perfect. She had come the moment he called.Victor didn’t waste time on pleasantries. “Have you handled Evelyn?”Sophia met his gaze steadily. “I called her earlier today. I advised her to back out of the Global Dynamics contract. I told her it would be smarter for everyone if she stepped aside quietly.”Victor leaned forward slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing. “And what did she say?”“She refused,” Sophia replied, a small smile playing on her lips. “She was very certain. She said she’s not backing out and she’s ready for anything that comes that she doesn't care and knows no one is going to talk her out of this, not e

  • Only after I left    Eyes everywhere

EYES EVERYWHEREAdrian sat behind his desk, the city skyline stretching out behind him like a kingdom he was struggling to hold together. The meeting with his father still burned in his chest. He picked up the phone and dialed Sophia’s extension.“Come to my office,” he said when she answered. “Now.”A few minutes later, Sophia walked in, closing the door softly behind her. She looked composed and elegant in her tailored blouse, a small smile playing on her lips as if she already knew why she had been summoned.“Adrian,” she said smoothly, taking the seat across from him. “You wanted to see me?”He leaned back in his chair, studying her carefully. “What were you discussing with my father in his office earlier? I walked in, and the conversation stopped. I want the truth.”Sophia tilted her head slightly, her expression innocent. “Just work talk, Adrian. Nothing more. We were going over the Global Dynamics contract on how to make sure we win it, the best strategies to use, and the weakn

  • Only after I left    The meet

I would really appreciate an answer from the both of you, because I know you father he said you don't just call someone to your office “Father,” he said, voice tight. “What really brought you here today? You held a meeting with the team without even discussing it with me first. And what is Sophia doing in your office?”Victor looked up from behind his desk, his expression cold and unyielding. Sophia sat across from him, composed and quiet.Victor leaned back in his chair. “I came because I heard we’re at risk of losing the Global Dynamics contract to some nobody startup. I wanted to make sure the message was clear. We do not lose to dying companies. It’s a shame on the Harrison name.”Adrian stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him. “And you needed Sophia here for that? You bypassed me completely.”Victor’s eyes narrowed. “I see you’ve been less than capable or steady these past weeks, Adrian. Someone has to step in and fix things. This is not the man I raised you t

  • Only after I left    The chairman's arrival

THE CHAIRMAN'S ARRIVALThe morning at Harrison Group started like any other until Victor Harrison walked through the front doors.People noticed immediately. Heads turned. Whispers rippled across the open floors.“Is that the Chairman?”“He hasn’t come in person in months. What’s going on?”“Something big must be happening.”Victor moved with the same commanding stride he’d always had, tall, sharp-eyed, dressed in a perfectly tailored dark suit that made everyone around him straighten up without thinking. He didn’t smile. He didn’t greet anyone. He simply walked toward the executive elevators like the entire building still belonged to him. Because in many ways, it did.Adrian was in his office reviewing the latest Global Dynamics bid when his assistant knocked urgently.“Sir, your father is here. He wants an immediate meeting with the senior team in the main boardroom.”Adrian’s jaw tightened. He closed the file on his desk. “Tell everyone to be there in ten minutes.”When he entered
