SIGNED AWAY

I sat at the small table in my studio apartment, staring at the envelope from my lawyer. The divorce papers were ready. Clean, final, no demands beyond what the original contract allowed. I had agonized over this for days, but the time had come.

I picked up the phone and called my lawyer.

“Please send them to Adrian’s office today,” I said. “No return address. No personal note. Just the documents.”

“Understood, Evelyn. I’ll handle it discreetly.”

I hung up and leaned back, exhaling slowly. I wasn’t angry anymore. Just tired. Tired of waiting, tired of hoping, tired of being invisible in my own marriage. Signing these papers felt like the final step toward the life I was trying to build at Silverline.

At Harrison Group, Adrian’s assistant knocked on his door mid-afternoon.

“Sir, legal documents just arrived for you. From Evelyn’s lawyer.”

Adrian looked up sharply. “Send them in.”

The thick envelope was placed on his desk. He stared at it for a long moment before opening it. The divorce papers. Neatly prepared. No accusations. No financial demands. Just the quiet end of five years.

He read through every page, his jaw tightening. She had done this without a single conversation. Without telling him where she was. Without giving him a chance to fight for her.

Adrian leaned back in his chair, the papers heavy in his hands. She really stopped loving me, he thought. The realization hit harder than he expected. All the late nights, the distance, the way he had failed to show her what she meant to him had finally pushed her away completely.

He stood up and walked to the window, looking out over the city. Part of him wanted to refuse. To tear the papers up and demand she come back so they could talk. But another part, the exhausted, logical part, wondered if this was for the best. If she had truly given up on him, what was left to fight for?

His phone rang. Sophia.

“Adrian,” she said warmly when he answered. “I heard legal papers arrived. Are you alright?”

He let out a tired breath. “Divorce papers. She sent them through her lawyer. No note. No location. Nothing.”

Sophia was quiet for a moment. “I’m sorry. But… maybe this is for the best.”

Adrian sat back down. “You think I should sign them?”

“She left, Adrian. She chose to walk away without explanation. You’ve been patient. You’ve tried. But holding on to someone who doesn’t want to be held anymore… it only hurts you more. Sign them. Give yourself closure. You have the company. You have responsibilities. And you have people who actually value you here.”

Her voice was gentle, persuasive. “You deserve someone who sees your worth. Someone who doesn’t run when things get complicated.”

Adrian stared at the papers. Sophia’s words made sense. Evelyn had made her choice. She had left the house, left the company, and left him. Maybe she really had stopped loving him. Maybe the contract marriage had finally run its course.

“You’re right,” he said finally. “I can’t keep waiting for someone who doesn’t want to come back.”

“Good,” Sophia replied, relief clear in her voice. “I’ll be here if you need anything. We can go over the quarterly reports tonight if you want. Take your mind off it.”

Adrian thanked her and hung up. He sat there for nearly an hour, reading and re-reading the documents. Every signature line felt like another nail in the coffin of what they once had.

Finally, he picked up his pen.

Page after page, he signed. His hand was steady, but his chest felt tight. When he finished the last page, he leaned back and closed his eyes.

She stopped loving me.

The thought repeated in his mind like a dull ache. He had protected her for years in silence. Blocked board attempts to sideline her. Redirected opportunities. All the things he had never told her. And now she was gone, believing the worst of him.

He called his assistant. “Send these back to her lawyer. Make sure it’s processed immediately.”

“Yes, sir.”

Adrian stood up and poured himself a drink. The city lights glittered outside his window, but the office felt emptier than ever. He wondered where she was. If she was safe. If she was happy in whatever new life she had chosen.

Sophia was right. It was time to let go.

But as he took a sip of whiskey, a small, stubborn part of him still hoped foolishly that one day she might walk back through the door.

That hope, however faint, refused to die completely.

At my apartment, my phone buzzed with a notification from my lawyer.

The papers have been signed and returned. The divorce is now being processed.

I stared at the message for a long time. It was done. The contract marriage was officially over.

I should have felt relieved. Instead, I felt a strange emptiness. Five years. Gone with a few signatures.

I set the phone down and looked around my small space. This was my life now. Silverline. My independence. Ryan’s steady support. Ethan’s encouragement. I was building something real.

But as I sat there, one question lingered in the back of my mind.

Did Adrian even fight for

me at all?Or had he simply let me go?

  • Only after I left    The big day

THE BIG DAYThe conference hall buzzed with energy as I stepped inside. My heart was pounding, but I kept my head high. Today was the big presentation for the Global Dynamics contract. Silverline versus Harrison Group. I had spent weeks preparing for this moment, and I wasn’t going to let nerves ruin it.I found our assigned table near the front. Ethan was already there, looking nervous but determined. Ryan arrived shortly after, giving me an encouraging smile.“You’ve got this,” he said quietly. “Just show them what we’ve built.”I nodded. “I will.”Across the room, I saw the Harrison Group team. Sophia stood confidently at their table, reviewing notes. Adrian was beside her, tall and imposing in his tailored suit. He scanned the room with sharp eyes, clearly looking for someone. He didn’t know I was here. He didn’t know I was the one behind Silverline’s strategy. The moderator called the session to order. Harrison Group presented first.Sophia walked to the stage with smooth confide

  • Only after I left    The proposal

The proposal I was at my desk in the Silverline loft when the email came in. My heart beat a little faster as I clicked it open. Global Dynamics had sent their initial feedback on the proposals. The subject line was clear: Proposal Status Update.I read the first few lines and felt the air leave my lungs.Silverline Technologies Proposal Not Selected for Advancement. They thanked us for our submission and praised some aspects of our innovation, but ultimately said we lacked the proven scale and long-term reliability they required for a contract of this size. Harrison Group’s proposal had been accepted and moved to the next stage.I sat back in my chair, staring at the screen. The words blurred for a second. We had poured so much into this. Late nights, revisions, every idea I could pull together. And it wasn’t enough.Ethan walked over, his face already telling me he had seen it too.“Rejected,” he said quietly, sitting on the edge of my desk. “Harrison Group advanced. They cited our

  • Only after I left    Behind closed doors

BEHIND CLOSED DOORSVictor Harrison’s private office felt like a different world. The heavy oak desk, the deep leather chairs, and the panoramic view of the city made it clear this was where real power lived. He sat behind the desk like he owned every inch of the building because in many ways, he still did.Sophia sat across from him, legs crossed elegantly, her posture perfect. She had come the moment he called.Victor didn’t waste time on pleasantries. “Have you handled Evelyn?”Sophia met his gaze steadily. “I called her earlier today. I advised her to back out of the Global Dynamics contract. I told her it would be smarter for everyone if she stepped aside quietly.”Victor leaned forward slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing. “And what did she say?”“She refused,” Sophia replied, a small smile playing on her lips. “She was very certain. She said she’s not backing out and she’s ready for anything that comes that she doesn't care and knows no one is going to talk her out of this, not e

EYES EVERYWHEREAdrian sat behind his desk, the city skyline stretching out behind him like a kingdom he was struggling to hold together. The meeting with his father still burned in his chest. He picked up the phone and dialed Sophia’s extension.“Come to my office,” he said when she answered. “Now.”A few minutes later, Sophia walked in, closing the door softly behind her. She looked composed and elegant in her tailored blouse, a small smile playing on her lips as if she already knew why she had been summoned.“Adrian,” she said smoothly, taking the seat across from him. “You wanted to see me?”He leaned back in his chair, studying her carefully. “What were you discussing with my father in his office earlier? I walked in, and the conversation stopped. I want the truth.”Sophia tilted her head slightly, her expression innocent. “Just work talk, Adrian. Nothing more. We were going over the Global Dynamics contract on how to make sure we win it, the best strategies to use, and the weakn

  • Only after I left    The meet

I would really appreciate an answer from the both of you, because I know you father he said you don't just call someone to your office “Father,” he said, voice tight. “What really brought you here today? You held a meeting with the team without even discussing it with me first. And what is Sophia doing in your office?”Victor looked up from behind his desk, his expression cold and unyielding. Sophia sat across from him, composed and quiet.Victor leaned back in his chair. “I came because I heard we’re at risk of losing the Global Dynamics contract to some nobody startup. I wanted to make sure the message was clear. We do not lose to dying companies. It’s a shame on the Harrison name.”Adrian stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him. “And you needed Sophia here for that? You bypassed me completely.”Victor’s eyes narrowed. “I see you’ve been less than capable or steady these past weeks, Adrian. Someone has to step in and fix things. This is not the man I raised you t

  • Only after I left    The chairman's arrival

THE CHAIRMAN'S ARRIVALThe morning at Harrison Group started like any other until Victor Harrison walked through the front doors.People noticed immediately. Heads turned. Whispers rippled across the open floors.“Is that the Chairman?”“He hasn’t come in person in months. What’s going on?”“Something big must be happening.”Victor moved with the same commanding stride he’d always had, tall, sharp-eyed, dressed in a perfectly tailored dark suit that made everyone around him straighten up without thinking. He didn’t smile. He didn’t greet anyone. He simply walked toward the executive elevators like the entire building still belonged to him. Because in many ways, it did.Adrian was in his office reviewing the latest Global Dynamics bid when his assistant knocked urgently.“Sir, your father is here. He wants an immediate meeting with the senior team in the main boardroom.”Adrian’s jaw tightened. He closed the file on his desk. “Tell everyone to be there in ten minutes.”When he entered
