The tipping point

THE TIPPING POINT

The days after everything fell apart were unbearable. I still woke up early and made Adrian’s coffee and breakfast. That morning he walked into the kitchen and paused.

“You’re up early again,” he said.

“So are you,” I replied, sliding the plate toward him. “Busy day ahead?”

“Always.” He took a sip of coffee. “You’ve been quiet lately. Is everything okay?”

I forced a smile. “I’m fine.”

He didn’t push. He finished his coffee and said, “Don’t skip lunch,” before leaving.

At Harrison Group, things got worse. During a strategy meeting, Sophia smiled sweetly and said, “Evelyn’s framework is conservative, which is smart, but Adrian and I discussed a bolder direction yesterday. The projections could be much stronger.”

Michael Reed nodded. “Good point, Sophia. Let’s go with that.”

I forced a smile. “Of course.”

Later that afternoon, Sophia came to my office and closed the door.

“Evelyn, can we talk?” she asked, placing a manila envelope on my desk. “I wanted you to see these. I think you deserve the truth.”

I opened it slowly. “What is this?”

“Ultrasound photos,” she said softly. “I’m not trying to be the villain. Adrian has been so supportive. He stepped up when I needed him. You deserve to know.”

I stared at the images. “Why are you doing this?”

“Some marriages have natural endings,” she replied. “I’m sorry you’re caught in the middle.”

She stood up. “Take care of yourself, Evelyn.”

She left, heels clicking down the hallway.

That evening, I waited for Adrian in the living room.

“Adrian,” I said as he loosened his tie, “there are rumors at the office. People are saying the baby is yours.”

He stopped. “What rumors? That’s not true. Where is this coming from?”

I shook my head. “I’m resigning from Harrison Group. Effective immediately. I can’t do this anymore.”

He stared at me, shocked. “You’re resigning? Why? Talk to me, Evelyn. I don’t understand why you’re suddenly doing this.” Because of some office gossip, I can't believe this. 

“I’m tired,” I said quietly. “I need space. But I’m not leaving the house yet. I’ll stay in the guest room for now.”

Adrian looked blindsided. “You don’t have to resign. We can fix this. Just tell me what’s really going on. Those are just gossip; you shouldn't take it too seriously. Wow, Adrian, have you ever thought of me putting you in this position? I'm sure you won't take it as a joke, but here you're asking me not to take it seriously. Well, I don't blame you, but obviously my family does.

I moved my things to the guest room that night.

The next morning, he tried again in the kitchen.

“Evelyn, can we talk about this?” he asked. “I don’t know why you resigned. Is this about the rumors? I’ll handle them if you tell me what’s happening.”

I replied, “I’m tired of being invisible, Adrian. That’s all.”

He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. Invisible how? You're not invisible. I just… I don’t understand. Stay and we can work through it.”

I stayed in the house but kept my distance. Sophia continued spreading the rumors at the office.

One day, I overheard her saying to a group of executives, “Adrian has been wonderful through all of this. I don’t know what I would have done without him; he's the best thing that has ever made me such a kind man. I'm so blessed, and I'm sure once this child is born, he's going to be the happiest man on earth. I love him so much.

The rumors grew louder, but Adrian still had no idea how bad they had become.

One evening, he knocked on the guest room door.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

I opened the door. “What is it?”

“I don’t know why you’re pulling away like this,” he said. “The company needs you. I… I need you to tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.”

I replied, “I just need time, Adrian. That’s all I can say right now.”

He still had no idea about the full extent of Sophia’s rumors or why I was really breaking.
