Whispers and warnings

The tension in the house was thick. I stayed in the guest room, avoiding Adrian as much as possible.

One morning, he was already in the kitchen when I came down.

“Evelyn,” he said, setting his coffee down, “we can’t keep living like this. You resigned without any real explanation. Talk to me.”

I poured myself a cup. “I told you. I’m tired. I need space.”

“Space?” He stepped closer. “You’re living in the guest room of our own house. People at the office are asking why you suddenly left. What am I supposed to tell them?”

“Tell them whatever you want,” I replied. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

He ran a hand through his hair. “It does matter. You matter. I don’t understand why you’re shutting me out.”

I didn’t answer. I took my coffee and went back to the guest room.

At Silverline Technologies, the work was intense. Ethan greeted me when I arrived.

“Evelyn, thank God you’re here,” he said. “We lost another investor yesterday. Any ideas on how to stop the bleeding?”

“I have a few,” I replied, opening my laptop. “We need to reposition the platform. I’ll draft a new pitch by the end of the day.”

“You’re a lifesaver,” he said with a tired smile.

But the problems kept coming. One afternoon, Ethan looked panicked.

“Evelyn, two more potential partners just backed out,” he said. “They mentioned concerns about ‘Harrison connections’ and ‘personal drama.’ Did something happen when you left?”

My stomach dropped. “I resigned cleanly. This shouldn’t be happening.”

I knew exactly who was behind it.

That evening, Adrian tried again.

“Evelyn,” he said when he came home, "do you just want to sit at home and do nothing? Why would you do that? I can get you back at Harrison Group. Just say the word.”

I turned to face him. “I don’t want to go back. I’m building something new.”

He stepped closer. “This doesn’t make sense. Talk to me. Please.”

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed. It was Ethan.

“Another investor pulled out,” he said when I answered. “They said they heard rumors about you and Harrison Group. Something about a pregnancy scandal. Do you know anything about this?”

I froze. “I’ll handle it.” I didn't want Adrian to know what I was up to. 

The next day at Silverline, things got worse. Ethan showed me an email.

“Look at this,” he said. “A major investor just withdrew. They mentioned ‘reputational risk’ due to your connection to the Harrison family. This is killing us, Evelyn.”

I knew Sophia was behind it. She was using her position and Adrian’s name to sabotage me even here.

That night, Adrian knocked on the guest room door.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

I opened the door. “What is it?”

“I don’t know why you resigned,” he said, frustrated. “The company needs you. I need you to tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.”

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.

Adrian opened it.

Sophia stood there, looking elegant.

“Adrian,” she said softly, “I’m sorry to come by so late. I needed to talk to you about the appointment tomorrow.”

Adrian frowned. “Sophia? What appointment?”

She glanced at me, then back at him. “The one for the baby. You promised you’d be there.”

Adrian’s face went pale. “Sophia, what are you talking about?”

Sophia smiled sweetly. “You said you’d support me through this. Remember?.

The air in the hallway grew thick as Adrian turned to look at me, confusio

n and shock written all over his face.
