The city blurred past in streaks of neon and rain-streaked black. Axel’s knuckles were white against the steering wheel, smeared with Mia’s blood. It soaked through his shirt, warm and wet against his skin, every drop a countdown he couldn’t stop.

“Faster,” Daniel growled from the passenger seat, glancing back at Mia again, even though his hand hadn’t left hers since they’d laid her in the back seat.

“I’m doing ninety through fucking downtown,” Axel snapped, voice cracking. “I can’t go faster without drawing attention.”

She was barely breathing.

Mia’s head lolled to one side, her lips parted, skin waxen and growing colder by the second. Her shirt was soaked through, sticky and dark beneath the pressure pad Daniel had improvised from a torn sleeve.

“You call your guy?” Daniel asked, voice tight with panic.

“I’m calling now,” Axel said, fumbling with the dash console. He hit the number he never thought he’d need again—Dr. Navin, the discreet doctor who handled messes li

She’d looked like a fucking goddess walking out of the dressing room that morning. A vision in silver. Sharp, stunning, dangerous. But all Axel could see was the risk. The way her hands trembled before she slipped on the heels. The way Daniel went silent. The way the air changed when she walked into the war room. Now, she was deep inside Slade’s compound, and every second she was out of sight made Axel’s pulse tick higher. He stood over the tactical table in the van, headset jammed in his ear, watching Mia’s location blink steadily across the digital map. “Northwest camera’s just looped,” Lauren said from the front. “You’re good, Mia. But eyes on you from the northeast hallway—two guards.” Axel’s voice stayed level, even as his gut twisted. “Mia, keep your pace steady. You’re being watched from the northeast hall. Two guards. You’re okay. Lauren just confirmed you’re clean through the scanner.” “I’ve got eyes on her too,” Daniel’s voice crackled in over the comms. Calm. Grounding

She had been preparing for this moment for days—mentally, emotionally, physically. Slipping into the slinky silver dress felt like donning armor, not seduction. Her makeup was flawless, sultry but sharp. Her hair curled down her back in soft waves. Every inch of her designed to seduce, distract, provoke. The perfect bait. Axel had tried to stop her three times this morning. Daniel hadn’t even spoken until she’d walked out of the dressing room and into the war room, heels clacking like gunshots. Now she was here. In the enemy’s den. And every step she took down the marbled hallway of Slade’s LA compound felt like it echoed with ghosts. Girls like her had been dragged through these halls. Stripped. Collared. Sold. Not tonight. Tonight, the game was flipped. The earpiece buzzed softly. Axel’s voice came through low, focused. “Mia, keep your pace steady. You’re being watched from the northeast hall. Two guards. You’re okay. Lauren just confirmed you’re clean through the scanner.”

The words pulsed in her head like a steady drumbeat as she leaned back in the private jet’s plush seat, her gaze locked on the glittering lights of Los Angeles inching closer through the window. Axel and Daniel sat across from her, deep in conversation about security routes, surveillance footage, and extraction points, but Mia wasn’t listening. Not really. Her body was still, calm, but inside? Inside, she was coiled tight with fury. Not fear. Not anymore. Not after what she’d seen. Not after what she’d heard Slade was doing. Women—girls—taken, drugged, branded with tattooed wings on their backs like trophies. The so-called Angel Auctions weren’t just whispered rumors anymore. There was proof now. A location. A list of attendees. A time. A prize.Tomorrow night. She had seen photos. Faces she couldn’t forget. Bruised. Bound. Terrified. And one space left empty. Labeled: MIA. Top of the list. Special entertainment. Her name, printed like some sick invitation. She was supposed to

The call came just after midnight. Daniel was sitting on the edge of the couch, elbows on his knees, his phone pressed to his ear. The voice on the other end was one of Axel’s informants embedded in the darker underbelly of L.A.—a man who didn’t speak unless he had something real to speak about. Tonight, he did. “The Slade Angel auction. Tomorrow night. West L.A. Some luxury compound dressed up like an art gallery. Password entry. Invite-only.” Daniel’s stomach turned. “How many women?” he asked, voice like gravel. “Too many. The ones Slade took from Vegas? They’re being called the ‘crown jewels’ of the event. But there’s one special listing.” Daniel didn’t breathe. “Mia?” There was a pause, then the man sighed. “Not on the list. Not officially. But there’s chatter. A secret lot. Unannounced. One-of-a-kind. Code-named Red Angel, I’ve sent the file to Axels computer under an encrypted password.” Daniel stood, pacing as heat flared in his chest. He didn’t need

The room emptied, but the dread didn’t. Lauren made an awkward joke and slipped away, muttering something about “retouching her mascara and charging her vibrator before the apocalypse.” Daniel stayed behind just long enough to brush his knuckles down Mia’s arm, his touch grounding but tense. Then it was just her and Axel. Alone. In a silence that didn’t feel safe anymore. “He’s not building a weapon,” Axel had said, voice hard. “He’s building a market.” Mia sat on the couch, heart pounding, her fingers twisting in the hem of her shirt. “What does that mean, Axel?” He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he disappeared into a locked room and came back with a sleek black file case. Something about it made her stomach churn. “Come with me,” he said softly. She followed him down a narrow hall, her bare feet silent on the cool tile. They stepped into a darkened office space—clean, sterile, but cold. There were security monitors blinking against the far wall, and in the cent

The moment Axel hung up the phone, the entire room shifted. The air crackled with adrenaline. Mia sat up, pulling the robe tighter around herself, eyes wide and searching. Daniel stood beside the bed, already on alert, muscles tense like a coiled spring. “They spotted him,” Axel said, his voice low and sharp. “Private jet landed outside LA. He’s meeting with one of the West Coast mafia families.” Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “He’s rallying them.” “Exactly,” Axel muttered. “Trying to build something bigger. Probably planning to strike back hard.” Mia’s breath stuttered. “Is… is he coming here?” “Maybe not yet,” Axel replied. “But if he’s making deals, Vegas is still on his list.” Silence dropped over them like a hammer. Then Daniel grabbed his hoodie and slid it on. “We keep him in LA. We don’t let this shit touch her again.” Axel’s eyes flicked to Mia, then back to Daniel. A rare moment passed—agreement without words. Something unspoken. Respect, even if it still tasted bi
