EMMA

For a second, I couldn’t feel my heart beating.

Alex was looking at me. Waiting like the apology he’d just laid out was supposed to change something. Like it was supposed to undo the damage of six years with a few carefully chosen words.

The truth was… I didn’t even know what I felt.

There was a time when hearing those words would have meant everything to me. Hell, if he’d even said “sorry for doubting you back then,” I would’ve forgiven him on the spot.

But now?

Now those words just twisted something inside me. Something too tangled to name. Anger. Resentment.

But I couldn’t afford to let any of that show.

Squaring my shoulders, I kept my expression still.

“Emma...” Alex whispered.

I didn’t blink. “Are you done talking?”

Alex shifted. “I… yes. But—”

“Good,” I cut in, reaching for my purse. “So I can leave now.”

Before I could stand, he reached across the table and placed his hand over mine. His touch felt like a burn. I quickly pulled my hand away.

Just then, the server came wit

The kiss caught me completely off guard. For a couple of seconds, I was too taken aback to react as her lips pressed against mine. They felt unfamiliar, and they evoked nothing in me.When the initial shock wore off, I broke away abruptly, stepping back to put distance between us."What are you doing?" I demanded, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand."What I've dreamed of doing for so many years," Hillary breathed, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I missed you so much, Alex. Now I know you missed me too."I stared at her in disbelief. “Hillary, what the hell are you talking about?”She blinked. “You helped me. You helped me be free of Robert and..."I vehemently shook my head even before she was done speaking. "Hillary, helping you doesn't mean I still love you. I only wanted to help because it was the right thing to do. I would have done the same for any other person in your situation."Disappointment flashed through her eyes. “So you don't love me anymore?”The mere thought

ALEXThe men across from me were talking.I could see their mouths moving and their hands gesturing animatedly to the thick folder on the table between us as they tried to pitch me an investment proposal. But I was damned if I could hear a single word they were saying.Emma’s face and her lips were all I saw. Soft, full, and warm against mine. That kiss last night had felt like coming home after years of wandering in the cold. My body still remembered the press of her curves, the way her breath had caught when I deepened it.It had made my entire body come alive in a way it had never done. That was what a single kiss from her could do to me.A low tightness stirred in my groin at the memory, and I shifted in my chair.“Sir, are you alright?” Harry’s voice cut in at my side as he leaned closer with a concerned expression.Harry had only gotten back from Spain three days ago after sorting out that bureaucratic mess with the government.I nodded curtly, trying to drag myself back into th

"Okay. What are you thinking about, sweetheart?” my mother said. “What has got you so pensive?”We were in the backseat of the car on our way back home, being driven by the chauffeur.I startled slightly at my mother's voice, realizing I'd been staring out the window without really seeing anything. "Nothing. I'm fine."My mother's knowing smile told me she wasn't buying it for a second. "Is it about Rachel and her boyfriend? Their situation reminded you of what happened with Alex years ago, didn't it?"I winced before I could control my reaction, but I tried to cover it up anyway. "Why would it remind me of that? It's not the same thing at all.""It is the same," she said calmly, her voice gentle but certain. "You loved Alex dearly, and he broke your heart by believing something about you that wasn't true because he was deceived into believing it. Just like Rachel and her boyfriend.""It's not the same," I insisted, my voice coming out sharper than I intended. "Six years have passed,

The spa was everything I needed and more. My mum didn't book appointments in advance because she didn't have to. That was the perk of being the owner.Mum made sure we experienced every luxury the place had to offer whenever we came there, and today was no exception. We started with a detoxifying body wrap that left my skin feeling like silk, followed by a facial that made me feel human again. The steam room melted away tension I didn't even realize I was carrying, and the eucalyptus scent cleared my head in a way I hadn't experienced in weeks."This is exactly what we both needed," my mother said as we lounged in plush robes between treatments, sipping coconut water. When it came time for our deep-tissue massages, I practically melted into the heated table. The masseuse's skilled hands worked magic on my tense muscles, and for the first time in days, my mind quieted. That peace lasted exactly ten minutes. As the masseuse's hands moved across my waist, my treacherous brain decided to

I did not dream of Stefano.Instead, my sleep had been filled with images of a hard body, firm arms, and persuasive lips that belonged to a completely different man.I woke up with my heart racing and Alex's name on my lips, which left me feeling rattled and confused.I thought I was long past the years where Alex dominated my dreams, where he was the first thing I thought about when I woke up and the last thing on my mind before I fell asleep. So what the hell was this?I sat on the edge of the bed for a full minute, pressing my hands to my face like I could scrub the heat off. This was ridiculous. It was just a dream. Just a dream… right?Pushing away every lingering effect of the dream, I forced myself out of bed and went through my morning routine. Once I had freshened up and gotten dressed, I headed downstairs. My parents and Celia were already gathered around the dining table, waiting for breakfast to be served."I was just about to come up and call you," my mother said, looking

EMMAWhen I entered the house, my mother and Celia were in the living room, deep in conversation and laughing about something.I immediately schooled my face into what I hoped was a normal expression, trying to hide how completely rattled I felt on the inside."Emma, you're back!" my mother called out as I walked toward them.I went over and kissed her cheek before settling onto the space beside her."Where's Dad?" I asked, glancing around the quiet house."He went to bed soon after dinner," she replied. "He must be fast asleep by now." Her eyes sparkled with curiosity as she looked at me. "Where are my grandkids?""They wanted to stay back at Alex's house," I said, trying to keep my voice casual as I said Alex's name.My mother looked at me with a slightly sheepish expression. "So how was the new house?"My eyebrows shot up in surprise. "How did you know about the house?""Alex brought me ther
