Alex didn't move his gaze. His eyes locked on mine, searching like he could find his answers even if I didn't tell him anything.

“Emma,” he said, his voice low and close. “You haven’t answered my question.”

I stepped back automatically, glaring at him. “You don’t get to ask me that. My personal life is none of your business.”

The smile on his lips didn’t budge. “Why is it so hard for you to give me an answer?”

“I’m not finding anything hard,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. “I just don’t owe you my emotions, Alex. You need to watch yourself. I might have let you be with my children today, but that doesn’t mean you get to pry into my private life.”

His smile faded just enough for the hurt to peek through. “They’re my children too, Emma.”

“Exactly,” I said. “You’re their father. And that’s the only thing you need to be focused on, not my private life.”

His jaw clenched. He took another step toward me, his gaze softer now, like he wanted to say something else.
