Chapter 66

Estelle

✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦

The morning started badly and got progressively worse.

Kegan had woken me at 6 AM with coffee and a new phone—sleek, encrypted, completely different from the one I’d been using.

He’d explained, with that careful patience he used when delivering bad news, that the threatening texts were coming from inside Carrie’s campaign headquarters.

“Someone in that building knows who you are,” he’d said, watching me process this information with growing horror. “I don’t know the how yet.”

“Who?” I’d asked, my hands shaking around the coffee mug. “Who would—”

“We don’t know yet. But my money’s on Oliver Sutton.”

Oliver. I’d only just met the guy yesterday. How could he catch on so fast?

“What do I do?” I’d whispered.

“Nothing.” Kegan had taken my face in his hands, forcing me to meet his eyes. “You do absolutely nothing. You pretend you never saw those messages. You act completely normal. And you let me handle Oliver.”

“But if he knows—”

“He suspects. That’s different

Chapter 73 Kegan ✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦ I pulled into my building’s private garage, exhaustion finally hitting me like a physical weight. It had been a long day—starting with Estelle’s panic about the baby blanket, progressing through five corpses at Gold Golf that I’d had to create, and ending with breaking into a stalker’s apartment and jumping between buildings like I was twenty-five instead of thirty-two. My ribs were definitely going to remind me of that last part for days. And Wednesday was still hours away. The elevator ride up to my penthouse stretched out for what seemed like an eternity. When the doors finally opened, I found Estelle exactly where Marco had described—pacing my bedroom, phone in one hand, tablet in the other, papers spread across the bed in what looked like a pattern of an overzealous detective from a TV show. She spun when she heard me enter, relief and frustration warring on her face. “Finally. Do you have any idea how—” She stopped mid-sentence, taking in my

Chapter 72Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦I took photos of the entire conversation, my jaw clenching tighter with each screenshot. Then I clicked through to other chats, there I found more evidence of planning and surveillance. I moved to his closet, looking for anything else that might be useful. What I found made me actually laugh, a sound that was more disbelief than humor, echoing in the too-quiet apartment.Photographs. Hundreds of them. But not of Carrie this time. These were trophies. Different women, different locations, all clearly taken without their knowledge or consent. Some were relatively innocent, ranging from women at coffee shops, in parks, going about their daily lives, completely unaware they were being documented. Others were far more invasive, shots through windows, in changing rooms, intimate moments captured and preserved like specimens in a collection. This idiot wasn’t just obsessed with Carrie. He was obsessed with documenting, creeping, stalking, and keeping souvenirs.

Chapter 71Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦My hands weren’t shaking. They never did, even after violence. Years of training and experience had taught me to compartmentalize, to separate the necessary evil of killing from my emotional response to it.But I hated it. God, I hated it.Hated the waste. Hated the bodies that would need disposing. Hated the fact that three men were dead because they’d been stupid enough to threaten me and stubborn enough not to walk away when given the chance. This wasn’t who I wanted to be. The man who killed without blinking, who could stand in a room full of corpses and feel nothing but irritation at the cleanup required. But it was who I needed to be to survive in this world. To protect the people I cared about. To keep Estelle safe.Marco arrived with the cleanup team exactly twenty minutes later. They worked with efficient silence, documenting everything, bagging bodies, sanitizing surfaces. Professional death dealers who’d done this a hundred times.“Boss,” one of

Chapter 70Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦Gold Golf was a forty-minute drive from central London, longer with traffic. I needed to get there, do a sweep, and get back before Estelle left her office.I got there in thirty minutes.I parked near the old maintenance building that served as the entrance to the storage levels. The security system showed green across the board—no breaches, no unauthorized access. But something felt wrong.I’d learned a long time ago to trust that instinct. Mine usually whispered danger before the evidence appeared. It has kept me alive through a dozen situations where I should’ve died.I entered through the service door, my hand on the weapon I rarely used but never left home without. The stairwell down to the bunkers was dark, lit only by emergency strips that cast everything in sickly green.Halfway down, I heard voices.Multiple voices. Coming from the storage level.I paused, listening. Five, maybe six men. Moving stuff. Discussing in low tones that didn’t carry clea

Chapter 69Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦The coffee had gone cold two hours ago, but I kept drinking it anyway, staring at the security feeds from Carrie’s campaign headquarters on one monitor while tracking shipment manifests on another.Multitasking had always been my strong suit, and lately it was a survival requirement.Through the earpiece I’d been wearing since Estelle walked into that building this morning, I’d heard everything. From the conversations, to every footstep in her hallway, to every anxious breath she took when she thought no one was listening. That Oliver guy had already written his will in my books, he just didn’t know it. All there was left was the signature on his death certificate. It was halfway there. It’d just take one more foolishness from him for him to sign It. The baby blanket had nearly made me drive straight to her office and drag her out by force. But Estelle—stubborn, brilliant, infuriating Estelle—had made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere. But that wouldn’t h

Chapter 68Estelle✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦I made it back to my office on shaking legs, clutching the tablet Carrie had given me like it was a lifeline instead of a noose.Three days. I had three days to plan an entire summit that would be scrutinized by press, donors, and Carrie’s political enemies. Three days to prove I belonged in this world while someone was actively trying to prove I didn’t.The baby blanket sat in my drawer like a ticking bomb.Through the earpiece, Kegan’s voice was tight: “What did she want?”“She assigned me to plan a major summit. In three days.”A pause. “That’s… actually good news. It means she trusts you.”“Or it means she’s setting me up to fail spectacularly in front of everyone who matters.” I sank into my chair, exhaustion hitting me like a physical weight. “Kegan, I don’t know how to plan events like this. I barely know how to walk around this office without getting lost.”“You’re brilliant and very interested in impressing her, so I’m sure you’ll figure it out.”
