Asher’s Pov

The sound of my own voice hitting the bathroom door made me instantly regret speaking.

I heard Rowan gasp on the other side, a sharp, terrified intake of breath that told me everything I needed to know. I had pushed too hard. If I used my Alpha authority to force that door open right now, I would completely destroy whatever fragile trust she had left in me.

My hands curled into tight fists at my sides. I forced myself to step back from the wood.

"I'm going," I said, keeping my voice low and steady so she wouldn't hear the panic clawing at my own chest. "Take your time. I'll be outside."

I walked back into the main hotel room and waited, pacing the floor until I heard the lock click open and the quiet shuffle of her footsteps heading toward her own bed. Only when I was certain she was safe did I retreat to my room, though my wolf spent the rest of the night scratching restlessly against my ribs. Rowan’s sweet scent of snow and vanilla had leaked through the air, and my mind refused to settle now that the truth was entirely out in the open.

The next morning, Rowan acted as if nothing had happened.

When we met in the hotel dining hall for breakfast, she sat across from me with her shoulders squared and a bright, artificial smile plastered across her face. She talked about the game schedule, buttered her toast with far too much concentration, and completely avoided looking me in the eyes.

It irritated me more than I wanted to admit.

"You're acting weird," I muttered, stabbing my fork into my eggs.

"I'm completely normal," she shot back instantly, her voice a little too high. "Never been more normal."

Across the table, Mason stopped mid-bite of his bagel, his eyes darting back and forth between the two of us with a massive grin spreading across his face.

"Wait a minute," Mason said loudly, pointing his butter knife at us. "Did you guys fight? You've got that whole 'married couple arguing in secret' vibe going on."

"We did not have a fight," Rowan and I blurted out at the exact same time.

The coincidence was so sharp that the rest of the team stopped eating instantly. A couple of senior players burst out laughing, and Mason raised both eyebrows.

"Oh, wow. Exactly at the same time? Yeah, definitely a fight," Mason teased, shaking his head. "Look at the captain. He's sweating bullets."

Rowan turned bright red, muttering something under her breath about needing more coffee, while I glared at Mason until he finally turned his attention back to his food. Even though I was annoyed, watching Rowan try to hide behind her coffee cup brought a quiet, reluctant smile to my face.

The light mood didn't last long.

Right as we were finishing breakfast, my phone buzzed on the table. I looked down at the screen, and my good mood vanished instantly. A text from my father popped up: Arriving at Silvercrest for the home game tomorrow. Expect me at the arena.

My jaw tightened so hard my teeth ached.

"Bad news?" Rowan asked softly, her voice cutting through my thoughts.

I looked up, surprised to find her watching me with genuine concern. She had completely dropped her guarded expression.

"My father is coming for the next home game," I said, staring down at the table.

Rowan winced slightly. "Alpha Damien? I thought he usually only came for the finals."

"He wants to inspect things," I muttered, frustration bleeding into my words. "He wants to make sure I'm leading the pack the way he wants, keeping up the right image, playing the right role."

I hadn't planned on telling her any of this. But sitting here across from her, the words just spilled out.

"Sometimes it feels like nobody cares about who I actually am," I admitted, my voice dropping lower. "They only care about the Alpha title I'm going to inherit. To them, I'm just a future crown, not a person."

Rowan went completely quiet. She didn't offer empty platitudes or tell me it would all be fine. She just looked at me with those deep, dark eyes, her gaze full of a heavy, understanding empathy that took my breath away. She knew what it was like to carry a fake identity just to survive the expectations of this place.

"I get it," Rowan whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Living for everyone else's expectations... It's exhausting. But you're a good captain, Asher. And you're a good person. Don't let them take that away from you."

Her words hit me right in the chest, warmer and heavier than anything my father had ever said to me. For a second, the connection between us was so strong that I wanted to reach across the table, take her hand, and tell her everything—that she didn't have to hide from me, that she could trust me completely with her secret.

Before I could open my mouth, a sharp, mocking voice broke the spell.

"Well, well. Look at the cozy little study group."

I stiffened, and Rowan went rigid.

We looked up to find Bianca Wolfe standing right beside our table. She wasn't looking at me; her cold, triumphant eyes were locked entirely on Rowan, a sharp and vicious smile playing on her lips.

"Rowan," Bianca said smoothly, though it sounded like an order. "Come here for a second. I need to talk to you outside."

Rowan didn't move. "I'm eating breakfast, Bianca."

"It won't take long," Bianca replied, her smile widening into something truly cruel. "And trust me... you're going to want to hear this."

Rowan swallowed hard, hesitation written all over her face. Slowly, she pushed her chair back and stood up, following Bianca a few feet away toward the entrance of the dining hall, just out of earshot from the rest of the team.

I started to stand up, my wolf growling a warning in the back of my mind, but I forced myself to pause and watch.

Bianca leaned in close, invading Rowan's personal space. I watched as Bianca whispered something short and deliberate into Rowan's ear.

The effect was instant.

Every single drop of color drained entirely from Rowan's face. She staggered backward a step, her eyes going wide with pure horror as her hands flew up to cover her mouth.

Whatever Bianca had just said, it had destroyed whatever fragile ground Rowan was standing on.

Asher’s Pov I watched the color completely drain from Rowan's face, leaving her looking paler than the ice beneath our skates. She didn't scream, and she didn't argue. She just went dead silent, her dark eyes wide with a terrifying panic that made my stomach churn. I knew right then why the sudden schedule change had wrecked her. The medical evaluations were tomorrow, and whatever secret she was carrying was about to be dragged out into the light. I didn't wait. I grabbed her by the hand before she could bolt, pulling her away from the secondary rink and out toward the empty main stadium. "Where are we going?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Nowhere," I answered, keeping my grip firm but gentle. "Just somewhere quiet." We slipped into the dark, massive stands of the main arena. The overhead work lights were on, casting a dim, golden glow that bounced off the polished ice below. We sat down on the cold metal bleachers, high up where nobody else could see us. The arena

Rowan’s Pov Two days. That was all I had left. Forty-eight hours before every single drop of my scent suppressants vanished, leaving me completely unprotected in a school packed with powerful Alphas. My heart pounded heavily as I stared down at my phone screen. The text from Aunt Ivy glared back at me: Delayed shipment. Next week at the earliest. "Rowan?" I jumped so hard I nearly dropped the phone. Asher was standing right in front of me, his crystalline eyes filled with worry. He had been right there the whole time, watching me fall apart piece by piece, and I couldn't even tell him why. "I'm fine," I lied, my voice shaking. I shoved the phone into my pocket and forced my feet to move. "I just... I need some air. I need to get on the ice." Avoiding Alpha students was hard enough when my life was normal, but now it felt like trying to dodge bullets in a dark room. Silvercrest Academy was preparing for its biggest home game of the season, and the pressure was suffocating. Every

Asher’s Pov The sound of the door clicking shut behind Mason didn't even register because Rowan’s voice was already echoing off the walls, sharp with pure, raw panic. "You don't understand, Asher! If people find out, everything I’ve worked for is over!" I stood right in the middle of the kitchen, my jaw clenched so hard I thought my teeth might crack. I was sick of it. I was sick of the shadows, the lying, the way she flinched every time someone looked at her too long, and most of all, I was sick of watching her carry a target on her back while refusing to let me help her. "Then make me understand!" I snapped back, taking a hard step toward her. "I'm tired of guessing, Rowan! I'm tired of watching Bianca corner you, and I'm tired of watching you look like you're about to collapse every single day! What is she holding over you?" Rowan backed up a step, her chest heaving as tears of frustration welled up in her eyes. She looked trapped, cornered by a monster of her own making. "I

Mason’s Pov I slammed the door shut and let out a whistle that echoed all the way down the hallway. If someone had told me a month ago that I’d walk into Captain Perfect’s suite and find our fierce, mysterious new rookie sleeping soundly against his chest, I would have laughed in their face. But there they were. The ultimate hockey power couple of Silvercrest Academy, tangled up in a blanket on the living room couch like a couple of lovesick kids. As soon as I gave them my warning and backed out, I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. This was absolute gold. I had enough blackmail material to tease Asher for the rest of our natural lives. The morning team meeting couldn't come fast enough. I walked into the locker room, grabbed my stick, and immediately locked eyes with Asher. He shot me a look that could have frozen water instantly—a dark, warning glare that clearly meant if you say a single word, I will end you. I just grinned back, leaning lazily against my locker. "Morning, Ca

Rowan’s Pov I thought the night would be tense and awkward, filled with unspoken questions and walls built a mile high, but it turned into something entirely different. Sitting there on the couch with a slice of pizza in my hand, surrounded by the quiet hum of the television, the heavy knot in my chest slowly began to loosen. Asher didn't press me for answers about Bianca, and he didn't demand to know why I had looked like a ghost earlier that day. He just handed me food, turned on an old hockey classic, and gave me a safe place to breathe. Before long, we were arguing loudly over the movie on the screen. "There is no way a defenseman would leave the slot wide open like that," I groaned, pointing a piece of crust at the television. "That goalie is completely out of position. Any rookie would score on that shot." Asher raised an eyebrow, a teasing smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "Oh, really? You think you could do better against a pro-level tender?" "In my sleep," I sho

Rowan’s Pov The words dropped like heavy lead weights straight into my stomach. "You want me to do what?" I whispered, staring at Bianca in absolute disbelief. Bianca crossed her arms, a cold, smug smirk spreading across her face. "You heard me, Rowan. Step down from the first line. Give up your spot before tomorrow's big game. Tell Coach you're injured or burnt out; I don't care how you spin it. Just get off the ice." I blinked, completely stunned. For a second, I actually thought she was going to demand I stay away from Asher, or humiliate me in front of the whole school, or pack my bags right then and there. "That's it?" I asked, my voice rising in pitch. "You're blackmailing me just because you want more playing time on the first line?" "It's not just about playing time," Bianca snapped, her eyes narrowing as her mask slipped for a second, revealing a flash of pure jealousy. "You came out of nowhere, stealing all the attention, taking ice time that belongs to people who act
