Chapter 238

Author: Bodhi Blossom
Natalie's face turned pale, and her body suddenly swayed, prompting her to steady herself against the white wall.

After a while, she asked in a low voice, "Is the surgery risky?"

The doctor nodded. "Yes, very risky. The doctors at this hospital can't perform the operation. If you wish to minimize the risk as much as possible, it's best to seek out Dr. Edmund Blackwell. But as far as I know, he hasn't performed any surgeries since he went into early retirement. Still, you can give him a try."

Natalie knew little about the medical field, so she immediately gave Bella a call to ask about Edmund. From Bella, she learned that he was a legend in the field, but when his wife fell seriously ill about five years ago, he resigned so he could devote all his attention to caring for her.

Over the years, many had tried to convince him to return, but all without success.

Bella also felt that the chances of Edmund agreeing to perform the surgery were very slim.

Natalie's face grew solemn. "But

"Everyone knows I have an illness, but they don't know what it is. I'm what you youngsters might describe as a lunatic who could snap at any given moment," Daisy said with a self-deprecating smile. "I was fine before I found out about my husband's affair with his student."I believed I'd married for love and that I was the luckiest woman in the world…"Daisy and Edmund went to the same college, though the former specialized in pediatrics while the latter was devoted to his cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research. Ironically, Daisy didn't have children despite being an excellent pediatrician. They'd gotten tests and realized Daisy couldn't have children. She'd considered divorcing Edmund when they were young, believing she shouldn't hold him back for life. However, he'd insisted they stay married and even told her that if things ever came down to it, he'd choose her over having children without hesitation. After that, Daisy thought things through and chose to stay married. Natalie froze at the seemingly untoward accusation. When had she ever made a move on her mentor? Was Daisy talking about Edmund? And judging by the look on Daisy's face, she was addle-minded and had mistaken Natalie for somebody else.Worried that she would hurt Daisy, Natalie didn't get physical. "Mrs. Blackwell, please let go of me. I'm not the woman you're talking about. You've got the wrong person."Daisy snapped, her eyes buzzing with rage as she demanded seethingly, "You bitch! It's you! I'd recognize you even if you turned into ash! I loved you like a daughter, you bitch!"How could you seduce him? He was your mentor! How could you make a move on him?"She was stumbling over her words, but her rage was clear and unadulterated, like a fire burning away at the last of her sanity. At that moment, Edmund bolted out of the bedroom. Seeing the altercation, he hurried over and stuck a needle in Daisy's arm.Daisy immediately went limp and passed out.Edmund caught her before she

Gracious as she was, Daisy beamed and said, "You're quite the understanding young lady. Unfortunately, my husband won't be able to help with your grandmother's surgery."Daisy was so gentle that it was impossible to be offended by her rejection. Natalie mused, "It's no wonder Dr. Blackwell is such a devoted husband to you, Mrs. Blackwell. You've got a gentle soul. In this time and age, it's rare to see a couple so in love with one another."Suddenly, Daisy's smile began to slip from her face, but it was back in place a second later. She didn't continue the conversation with Natalie after that and only rose to her feet. "I'll go check on my husband. Make yourself comfortable. No need to be shy."With that, she turned and headed into the bedroom.Natalie sat in the living room. Her hair was almost dry. She stood up and made her way to the window, gazing out at the heavy downpour outside the glass. Puddles were already forming on the road.Judging from the rain, she doubted it would

Natalie searched her surroundings for a temporary shelter from the downpour, but she didn't want to leave. She wouldn't give up, not until the last second. She was completely soaked within minutes, and as the breeze picked up, she couldn't help shivering with the cold.At that moment, the door in the fence opened, and Edmund handed her an umbrella. "You can come in and wait out the rain."Natalie was taken aback by Edmund's gesture. She hadn't expected the stubborn old Edmund to cave and let her into his house to take shelter from the rain. Did that mean he wasn't as cold and apathetic as he seemed? She corrected herself. Surely, a man who loved his sick wife as much as he did couldn't be cold or apathetic.Natalie took the umbrella. "Thank you."Edmund looked as impassive as ever as he led the way. Natalie followed him from behind, the warmth of the cottage seeping through her clothes the moment she stepped through the door. She stood at the threshold and had only just closed h

After that, Rowan lost all interest in continuing the conversation with Gregory. "Now, if we're done here, I'll take my leave."As he said that, he opened the door to the study and left.Gregory's gaze darkened after Rowan left. A moment later, the butler, Hubert Johnson, entered the study. "Mr. Mattel Senior, we have more or less straightened out Mr. Lorcan's affairs. Shall I have him move back home when the time is right?"Gregory was silent for a few seconds. "Rowan doesn't have much time left. Lorcan should come home soon."Hubert had his concerns. "Mr. Mattel Senior, I'm not sure how well Mr. Rowan will take Mr. Lorcan's return or if their meeting will end in a power struggle. With Lucius eyeing the family business and fortune, he might end up benefiting from their conflict."This had always been Gregory's concern. Rowan had already found a lead on Lorcan, yet he never brought it up with Gregory. Not only that, Rowan had nearly killed Lorcan.Gregory grew distressed over thi

"Ro picked on you?" Gregory asked.Pamela gave Rowan a meaningful look, then said jokingly, "Yes, he did. I had my eye on something while we were shopping earlier, but he offered it to another young lady to get on her good side. Did you know he was in love, Gramps?"Upon hearing this, Gregory cut an assessing look at Rowan. He knew Rowan's condition and understood the latter's choice to stay single all these years. Gregory thought Rowan was set on remaining a bachelor for life, but he never expected him to fall in love.Gregory's words were loaded with implication. "You should bring the young lady home if you're in love with her, Rowan. I won't judge as long as she's from a good family."A stormy look registered on Rowan's face as he said without hesitation, "I doubt that's necessary, considering she's engaged."At his age, Gregory had seen his fair share of drama, yet Rowan's words still surprised him. He didn't think Rowan would have such unique preferences.Pamela looked alarm
