Ethan was stunned by her questioning, his steps coming to a complete halt.

He stood frozen in the corridor, staring at Scarlett's pained and twisted face. Those deliberately blurred fragments of the past began piecing themselves together bit by bit, forcing him to remember things he'd rather forget.

Yes. Back in high school, his attitude toward Scarlett had indeed been terrible.

He had called her whenever he needed her, then dismissed her without a second thought when he didn't.

Now that she mentioned it, there was indeed one time when the prop cigarette butts she had procured for their little "performance" actually contained silver poison. He remembered that day clearly now—when the silver was lit, it had accidentally burned her fingers badly.
