Chapter 4

Author: Vincent Gale
That only made Callum angrier. He looked around, grabbed a stick that happened to be nearby, and raised it over his head, ready to bring it down on my skull.

"Enough, Jonas!"

Imogen couldn't bear to watch anymore. Seven years was a long time—even if she'd been raising a dog, she'd probably have grown attached to it.

Seeing me in such a battered state, she finally seemed reluctant to let things go any further.

"You've always wanted to make our marriage official, haven't you?" she asked. "Apologize to Callum, and we'll go to the city hall tomorrow and register our marriage."

I knew exactly what she was thinking. She just wanted to make sure I'd fall back in line. After all, there was a basic rule when raising a dog—it had to know who was in charge.

"I already told you," I said, laughing. "I'm not apologizing unless he's dead. And we're already over. Marry a woman who's been with someone else? Are you not disgusted by that? I already feel sick just thinking about it."

She stared at me in shock, clearly unable to believe what she'd just heard. I'd never spoken to her like that before, and she'd never seen me so determined to end things.

"Jonas, are you sure?" she gritted out, furious that I actually stood my ground.

"Do I really have to say it again?" I shot back with a sneer. "Is the CEO of Steele Group really that desperate for someone to marry her?"

"Jonas, don't push your luck," Imogen warned. "Before you say another word, think about your mother. Without me, she couldn't even afford an ICU bed!"

I'd stayed silent while Callum beat me. But the moment she brought my parents into it, I finally broke down in tears.

If I hadn't been so blindly in love with Imogen back then, my parents and I never would've ended up in this situation.

Mom wouldn't have died carrying all that grief and regret simply because Imogen never showed up to our wedding. Dad, on the other hand, wouldn't have been so devastated that he was admitted to the ICU and died along with Mom.

I regretted everything now, but there was no way to turn back time. I'd lost the two people who had loved me more than anything in the world for good.

"Stop crying. Just apologize to Callum, and we'll put this whole thing behind us," Imogen said, breathing a sigh of relief as she thought I'd finally given in.

"Are you deaf?" I spat. "I'll say it one last time. If you want me to apologize, then he'll have to die!"

I looked straight into her eyes and enunciated every word clearly, making sure she heard every syllable.

Imogen froze. She clearly hadn't expected me to refuse even now. I always listened to her before, and she never had to ask twice.

"Immy, you heard him," Callum cut in. "Jonas is being completely unreasonable."

Imogen's expression hardened. She walked over until she was standing directly in front of me. "Jonas, don't push me!"

"By the way," I whispered, leaning toward her ear. "If you're going to do it with him, remember to use a condom. Wouldn't want you catching something."

She then slapped me across the face. Her expression turned icy as she pulled out her phone and made a video call to Dr. Langdon right in front of me.

She deliberately chose a spot where I could see the screen clearly.

The call connected, and Dr. Langdon's face appeared.

"Ms. Steele, I'm sorry," he said, an ingratiating smile spreading across his face. "I was busy and didn't see your message. Is there something you need?"

"Dr. Langdon, I'd like you to cancel the VIP treatment for Jonas and his mother immediately. From now on, they'll have to pay for everything themselves."

As Imogen spoke, she looked at me with a mixture of triumph and warning. She thought I would eventually yield and apologize to Callum for Mom's sake.

But the docile smile on Dr. Langdon's face suddenly disappeared, replaced by an awkward expression.

"Um… Ms. Steele, are you joking?" he asked tentatively. "Mr. Beckett's mother passed away from a sudden heart attack seven days ago. It happened at your wedding."

Imogen went rigid.

"And Mr. Beckett's father was so devastated by the loss that he was admitted to the ICU," Dr. Langdon added. "The doctors tried to save him, but he died there as well."

Imogen's eyes suddenly widened. She looked down at her chest, only to realize she'd been stabbed. Blood gushed from her mouth as confusion filled her eyes. She had never imagined, not even in her worst nightmare, that the person she loved most would be the one to drive a knife into her heart. But how did things come to this? She would never have the chance to find out. The bodyguards and the rest of us had rushed forward and easily subdued Callum. He couldn't see through the pepper spray, and he was swinging the knife blindly. One of those wild strikes had happened to hit Imogen directly in the heart. Was it simply terrible luck, or was it fate? Perhaps after my parents died, this was always how things were meant to end for her. I'd forgotten what expression I wore that day. All I remembered was the confusing mixture of emotions that tore through me. First came an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, and the resentment I'd carried since my parents' passing seemed to disap

While I motioned for Randall to call the police, I kept my voice steady as I spoke to Callum. "Just tell me whatever you want. Put the knife down first. You don't want to go to prison, do you?"Callum hesitated. I saw the uncertainty in his eyes and realized I was getting somewhere. For all his bravado, he was still afraid of the law. "Callum, tell me what you want," I continued. "I'll do everything I can to give to you.""You?" He shot me a glare, his voice laced with contempt. "What could a nobody like you possibly give me? Since you asked, I'll tell you. Get me a billion dollars and a plane ticket out of the country. Otherwise, I'll kill Imogen."I froze. So that was his plan. A billion dollars? He sure was a greedy bastard.I gave him a dismissive smile. But the moment I looked at Imogen, it all made sense. My mind started working, and I motioned for her two bodyguards to come over. The moment Callum saw them move, he tensed. He pressed the knife more firmly against I

"Imogen, we all know what you're like," Matthew said. "How could you do something like this and still live with yourself? If you have even a shred of decency left, take Callum and get out of here.""I don't even feel like wasting my breath on them anymore. But anyone who messes with Jonas is going to regret it."Callum shrank back and hid behind Imogen. He looked like he wanted to say something, but wisely kept his mouth shut. A sigh escaped Imogen. She could tell there was clearly no point trying to reason with us. She turned toward my parents' graves and lowered her head respectfully. But just as she was preparing to leave with Callum, he had to cause another scene. He actually spat on my parents' graves. All of us stared at him in disbelief."Callum, what the hell do you think you're doing?" I roared, the veins on my forehead throbbing. Then I turned to Imogen. "Is this what you call coming here to pay your respects?"You'd better leave while I'm still holding myself bac

Now that my parents were gone, my friends insisted on paying their respects. I gladly agreed. Later, I returned to my parents' house and began sorting through their belongings. That was when I found a vintage bracelet. It had been passed down through our family for generations, and Mom had planned to put it on Imogen's wrist herself after the wedding. But life had other plans. None of us could have imagined so much could change in such a short time. One by one, I packed away my parents' belongings. With every item I put away, tears welled up in my eyes. It was only then that it truly sank in—everything I'd lost was gone forever. Regret was the only thing I could feel. Once I'd finished sorting through their things, I spotted a small note Mom had written to me when I was little. "My dear Jonas, always take good care of yourself. I want you to live a long, happy life."I finally broke down. I sobbed uncontrollably, unable to hold it in any longer. The dead were gone, and

I was already in a terrible mood, so I gave Callum one last slap. That was finally enough to knock him out. I glanced at Imogen, who was still sitting on the floor crying, and picked up my luggage. I walked out without looking back. As I passed the two bodyguards, I knew they had only been following orders. Still, after giving each of them 500 dollars, I slapped them both across the face. …Once I left Imogen's house and started walking down the street, the weight of everything finally sank in. My parents were gone, and my relationship was over. I had no one left. Just then, my phone rang. "Jonas, it's been ages! Come out and grab a drink with us."Warmth spread through my chest. "That's right," I thought. "I still have my buddies."The one calling me was Matthew Turner, one of the four of us who had been inseparable in university. Thinking about those carefree days brought a smile to my face. "Sure, Matt," I replied. "Let's meet today. By the way, are the other guys

"That can't be true!" Imogen cried. She didn't even bother holding her phone. She rushed toward me and somehow found the strength to shove the two bodyguards aside. "Immy, what are you doing?" Callum asked, visibly annoyed."Shut up!"She turned and slapped him across the face so hard that he stood there, stunned. It was the second slap he'd taken that day, and this one had come from Imogen herself. "Jonas, are you okay? I'm sorry. I really didn't know," she sobbed, tears filling her eyes and streaming down her cheeks. "I never thought anything like this would happen to Mr. and Mrs. Beckett. I swear I didn't mean for this to happen.""My parents are already dead." I stared at her coldly. "Can your apology bring them back? Don't you think it's a little too late now? Move. I need to get out."I pushed Imogen aside and walked toward the door. Completely ignoring her presence, I walked straight up to Callum and grabbed him by the hair. "Weren't you so tough just now?
