Chapter 3

Author: Vincent Gale
Imogen was the woman everyone admired. She was beautiful, but what truly set her apart was her extraordinary talent for business.

As soon as she came of age, she began taking over her parents' business. By the time I was still in college, she was already the CEO of a listed company.

Our relationship began with a cliché.

At the time, Callum had gone abroad to study while Imogen stayed behind to manage the family business. They missed their chance to be together, and Imogen spent the entire night drinking alone at a bar.

Later that night, she was walking home alone when a group of thugs started harassing her.

I stepped in to protect her and ended up with three broken ribs.

After that, we naturally became a couple. This year marked our seventh year together.

Imogen was fiercely career-driven and rarely talked much. For years, I'd done everything I could to make her happy, constantly bending over backward for her and swallowing my pride.

I'd always thought she was like an iceberg that could never be melted.

Then Callum came back from studying abroad. Only then did I realize that she was perfectly capable of thawing—just not for me.

Callum could put his arm around her waist and take her to any event, openly flirting with her and acting affectionate in front of everyone. A single phone call from him was enough to have her get out of bed and fly across the country to be by his side.

Once, I secretly followed her because I wanted to take her hand and attend an event with her. Yet, she slapped me in front of everyone.

"Jonas, when are you finally going to grow up?"

I was humiliated beyond words, and after that, I never attended another event with her.

To everyone around us, Imogen and Callum looked more like a real couple. I was nothing more than an outsider with the title of her boyfriend.

At one point, I even wondered if she'd only let me become her boyfriend because I happened to save her at the right time, filling the void left by Callum while he was overseas.

I no longer knew what any of the years I'd spent with her had been for.

Was it her money I wanted?

When I saved Imogen, I never asked her for anything in return. She'd offered to buy me a house and a car so I could experience the lifestyle of the wealthy, but I'd refused every time.

Every penny I'd spent during our relationship had been earned through my own work.

"Immy, I can't see!" Callum cried, pretending to panic as he grabbed the hem of Imogen's dress.

Concern immediately filled Imogen's face.

"Jonas, you've gone too far," she hissed, her eyes narrowing. "Look at you. Who are you trying to fool with this act? If you don't apologize to Callum, don't ever expect me to forgive you."

"Apologize to him?" I echoed, incredulous.

The fact that I hadn't beaten him to death was already proof of how much restraint I had left.

How many times had Imogen forced me to apologize because of Callum? In the past, I'd been willing to swallow my pride for her. But now, I'd already made up my mind to leave.

"Jonas, I'm only going to say this once more," Imogen warned, giving me one last ultimatum. "Apologize to Callum right now."

"Then let me make myself clear too," I shot back. "Unless he's dead, I'm never apologizing to him."

"You refuse to apologize, huh? Then you'll pay for it twice over," Callum snarled, his face twisting with anger.

The two bodyguards behind Imogen stepped forward and pinned me down. She didn't stop them and instead watched with a sneer.

"Apologize, and I'll tell them to let you go."

My eyes were bloodshot as I lifted my chin and glowered at them. "If you don't beat me to death today, you're no better than a son of a bitch."

My words sent Callum spiraling into a fit of rage. He swung his fist straight into my eye.

"That's all you've got?" I taunted. "I don't feel a thing at all."

That only made him hit harder. One punch followed another, then kicks rained down on me.

It hurt. My face was already battered and bleeding, and drops of blood fell onto the floor.

Before long, Callum finally stopped. He was drenched in sweat, his hands and feet trembling and numb. He couldn't keep going for much longer.

I forced a smile, looking at him with a mocking expression.

"You're that weak? Has Imogen ever told you you're not up to the job?"

Imogen's eyes suddenly widened. She looked down at her chest, only to realize she'd been stabbed. Blood gushed from her mouth as confusion filled her eyes. She had never imagined, not even in her worst nightmare, that the person she loved most would be the one to drive a knife into her heart. But how did things come to this? She would never have the chance to find out. The bodyguards and the rest of us had rushed forward and easily subdued Callum. He couldn't see through the pepper spray, and he was swinging the knife blindly. One of those wild strikes had happened to hit Imogen directly in the heart. Was it simply terrible luck, or was it fate? Perhaps after my parents died, this was always how things were meant to end for her. I'd forgotten what expression I wore that day. All I remembered was the confusing mixture of emotions that tore through me. First came an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, and the resentment I'd carried since my parents' passing seemed to disap

While I motioned for Randall to call the police, I kept my voice steady as I spoke to Callum. "Just tell me whatever you want. Put the knife down first. You don't want to go to prison, do you?"Callum hesitated. I saw the uncertainty in his eyes and realized I was getting somewhere. For all his bravado, he was still afraid of the law. "Callum, tell me what you want," I continued. "I'll do everything I can to give to you.""You?" He shot me a glare, his voice laced with contempt. "What could a nobody like you possibly give me? Since you asked, I'll tell you. Get me a billion dollars and a plane ticket out of the country. Otherwise, I'll kill Imogen."I froze. So that was his plan. A billion dollars? He sure was a greedy bastard.I gave him a dismissive smile. But the moment I looked at Imogen, it all made sense. My mind started working, and I motioned for her two bodyguards to come over. The moment Callum saw them move, he tensed. He pressed the knife more firmly against I

"Imogen, we all know what you're like," Matthew said. "How could you do something like this and still live with yourself? If you have even a shred of decency left, take Callum and get out of here.""I don't even feel like wasting my breath on them anymore. But anyone who messes with Jonas is going to regret it."Callum shrank back and hid behind Imogen. He looked like he wanted to say something, but wisely kept his mouth shut. A sigh escaped Imogen. She could tell there was clearly no point trying to reason with us. She turned toward my parents' graves and lowered her head respectfully. But just as she was preparing to leave with Callum, he had to cause another scene. He actually spat on my parents' graves. All of us stared at him in disbelief."Callum, what the hell do you think you're doing?" I roared, the veins on my forehead throbbing. Then I turned to Imogen. "Is this what you call coming here to pay your respects?"You'd better leave while I'm still holding myself bac

Now that my parents were gone, my friends insisted on paying their respects. I gladly agreed. Later, I returned to my parents' house and began sorting through their belongings. That was when I found a vintage bracelet. It had been passed down through our family for generations, and Mom had planned to put it on Imogen's wrist herself after the wedding. But life had other plans. None of us could have imagined so much could change in such a short time. One by one, I packed away my parents' belongings. With every item I put away, tears welled up in my eyes. It was only then that it truly sank in—everything I'd lost was gone forever. Regret was the only thing I could feel. Once I'd finished sorting through their things, I spotted a small note Mom had written to me when I was little. "My dear Jonas, always take good care of yourself. I want you to live a long, happy life."I finally broke down. I sobbed uncontrollably, unable to hold it in any longer. The dead were gone, and

I was already in a terrible mood, so I gave Callum one last slap. That was finally enough to knock him out. I glanced at Imogen, who was still sitting on the floor crying, and picked up my luggage. I walked out without looking back. As I passed the two bodyguards, I knew they had only been following orders. Still, after giving each of them 500 dollars, I slapped them both across the face. …Once I left Imogen's house and started walking down the street, the weight of everything finally sank in. My parents were gone, and my relationship was over. I had no one left. Just then, my phone rang. "Jonas, it's been ages! Come out and grab a drink with us."Warmth spread through my chest. "That's right," I thought. "I still have my buddies."The one calling me was Matthew Turner, one of the four of us who had been inseparable in university. Thinking about those carefree days brought a smile to my face. "Sure, Matt," I replied. "Let's meet today. By the way, are the other guys

"That can't be true!" Imogen cried. She didn't even bother holding her phone. She rushed toward me and somehow found the strength to shove the two bodyguards aside. "Immy, what are you doing?" Callum asked, visibly annoyed."Shut up!"She turned and slapped him across the face so hard that he stood there, stunned. It was the second slap he'd taken that day, and this one had come from Imogen herself. "Jonas, are you okay? I'm sorry. I really didn't know," she sobbed, tears filling her eyes and streaming down her cheeks. "I never thought anything like this would happen to Mr. and Mrs. Beckett. I swear I didn't mean for this to happen.""My parents are already dead." I stared at her coldly. "Can your apology bring them back? Don't you think it's a little too late now? Move. I need to get out."I pushed Imogen aside and walked toward the door. Completely ignoring her presence, I walked straight up to Callum and grabbed him by the hair. "Weren't you so tough just now?
