Chapter 4

작가: Unsweetened Coffee
Alessio's POV

I stared at Salvatore in disbelief, convinced I'd heard Salvatore wrong.

"She left Velmora a month ago?" I asked.

I snatched the key from his hand and pushed open Chiara's door.

The room was empty, dust drifting through the air.

Her desk still looked exactly as she'd left it, with the family handbook still lying open across the surface. But there was hardly a trace left to show she had ever lived here.

Salvatore hovered behind me, watching my every move with cautious eyes.

  • Our 99 Breakups Before the Real One   Chapter 7

Chiara's POVFive months into my time in this little town, I saw Alessio again.Drenched to the bone, he stood there stubbornly in the pouring rain. I looked at him once, wiped the grease off my hands, and went back inside. He'd lost weight. The light in his eyes was mostly gone, carrying the hollow look of someone who hadn't caught a decent night's sleep in months. The next morning, the second I opened my front door, he was still standing in the same spot, completely unmoved."Can I help you?" I asked, my voice flat.Alessio's Adam's apple bobbed. He took one step forward and then caught himself, stopping like he was afraid of startling me. His hands hung at his sides, visibly shaking."Chiara… I finally found you," he rasped. "I've been searching for a long time. I had people looking everywhere until I finally tracked you down here—""And what about it?" I cut him off, my tone laced with impatience. "You found me. Now what? Did you come all this way to tell me things worked

  • Our 99 Breakups Before the Real One   Chapter 6

Alessio's POVI tried using the family's intelligence network to dig up Chiara's whereabouts, but it seemed as if she'd anticipated exactly that and scrubbed every trace of herself long ago.I even sought out the best craftsman in Velmora and asked him to restore the pocketwatch, but he shook his head and turned me down."Alessio, there's nothing to be done to a broken watch. It can't be fixed."As I stared at the bullet hole, a sudden realization dawned on me. Some things, once broken, could never go back to the way they were.I started losing my temper at the drop of a hat, and I avoided Vittoria like the plague. She tried everything to get close to me again, including buying me gifts, and at one point even crying to me, claiming she was pregnant.I merely shot her a stone-cold look and told her to get a paternity test. She went pale and never brought it up again. Two months later, Vincenzo sent us both to the Westrov branch to negotiate with a new partner. I nearly turned i

Alessio's POVThe month following Chiara's departure brought a seismic shift within the family.Just as she had intended, Vittoria successfully seized control of three branch companies, marking her formal entry into the family's inner circle.Vincenzo even went so far as to host a lavish party in her honor.I sat at the main table and watched her work the room in a beautiful gown, smiling and soaking up congratulations from every direction.Meanwhile, I ignored everyone around me, doing nothing but throwing back glass after glass of alcohol."Alessio, what's gotten into you? You've been so down lately. Did something happen?"Vittoria strode over with her drink and intimately looped her arm through mine."Tonight's worth celebrating, and there are still a few faces here I don't recognize. I don't want to get anyone mixed up, so come around with me to make the toasts, would you?"I pulled my arm away, fixing her with a freezing stare."You've got what you wanted, Vittoria. From

I only found out she was leaving right before it happened," he explained. "I didn't want to touch anything in here, and Don Moretti said to leave it as is. The servants haven't cleaned this room since she left. If you'd like to use it, I can have someone come tidy up."Out in the corridor, scattered rose petals lay ruined on the floorboards.I assumed Chiara was still angry with me, and I knew that the last time I covered

Chiara's POVThe next day, Donna Isabella Conti came to the school to assess our progress. I was assigned to the storage room to take inventory of the equipment.I had barely pushed the door open when a force shoved me from behind, sending me stumbling inside. The door slammed shut and locked behind me.Vittoria and her friends stood on the other side, laughing."Let's see you try to stir things up in front of Donna Moretti now!""Vittoria worked so hard to earn her place in this family. You're not going to take that away from her!"The voices outside faded. I pounded on the door and screamed until my voice gave out and my energy was entirely depleted. Exhausted, I slumped helplessly onto the floor. It brought back a memory from when I was little, when enemies of the Moretti family had thrown me into a shipping container by the shore.I had curled up in the corner, shivering and starving.Alessio had searched through thousands of containers to find me, his body covered in cu

Chiara's POVAlessio and I rarely ever rowed for more than five days. Either he'd come around on his own, or I'd find a way to give him an opening.Even something as small as his passing me a glass of water at dinner was enough for me to take it as his apology. So when I found a coffee sitting on my school desk the next morning, I took it as his way of saying sorry and didn't think twice about it as I drank the whole thing. That was until I heard Vittoria and a group of girls giggling outside the restroom stall. Vittoria nudged one of them forward, who held out a few sanitary pads toward me."Toilet paper runs out eventually. These work just as well in a pinch," she said. "Three should be enough to get you through until you're home, though I'm not sure they'll do much about the smell."Only then did it hit me that Vittoria and her friends had spiked that coffee with laxatives. All day, I kept running back and forth to the restroom.By afternoon, I was slumped over my desk, my k
