Chapter 1

I flinched, and the broken porcelain cut my wrist, immediately drawing blood.

A flicker of frustration crossed my husband Philip Mumford's face. He looked exhausted, as though he'd had enough of this.

He stared at me for a few seconds before striding over. Without a word, he grabbed me and shoved me into the bathtub.

The ice-cold water hit me like a shock. The second I realized what he was doing, I panicked and started struggling.

"Philip! I'm preg—"

"Shut up!" he yelled, cutting me off.

He roughly pinned my wrists above my head and stared down at me for two seconds. His eyes were filled with disgust.

"You drugged me just to get me to sleep with you, didn't you? Haven't I done enough for you?"

I froze in disbelief, overwhelmed by the sheer absurdity of it.

Somehow, I found the strength to wrench myself free. I grabbed whatever was within reach and hurled it at him like a madwoman. "Get out! Get the hell out!"

Philip didn't even try to dodge. He just stood there, taking it, as if he had long since grown used to my outbursts.

When I'd finally let it all out, he lifted a hand and wiped away the blood running down his temple. His expression was cold and indifferent.

"I've recovered the videos you secretly filmed," he said flatly. "Whether you send them to the press or put them up on billboards across town, that's up to you.

"The files you've been collecting to use against me are on the USB drive on the desk. Do whatever you want with them."

He knew I wasn't going to let this go, so he simply laid out every way I could get back at him. At least those were consequences he could live with.

He was afraid of me.

The realization hit me so hard that I laughed through my tears.

"Philip, why won't you divorce me?" I asked.

He stopped at the door and glanced back, a mocking laugh escaping him.

"Would you even agree to that? Janet Stewart, I guess I'm stuck with you for life."

Whatever hope I had left shattered completely in that moment.

"Just leave Vivian alone. I'm begging you," Philip said coldly.

The door slammed shut, leaving me dazed for a long time afterward.

That was the third time I'd heard him beg.

The first time was when he was 18.

He stood up to his family and took a beating across the back until he was bleeding. But he just wiped the blood from his mouth and said to his father, "I won't marry anyone except Janet. I'm begging you—throw me out of the family or beat me to death. I don't care what you choose."

The second time was when I developed postpartum depression. He rushed to the rooftop and pulled me into his arms just as I'd taken one foot over the edge. His whole body was shaking.

"We can have another baby! Please, I'm begging you, don't leave me!" he pleaded. "If you jump, I'm jumping right behind you!"

And this was the third time. Only this time, he was begging me to let his mistress go.

A faint, bitter smile tugged at my lips. Tears mixed with blood and dripped into the bathwater.

With trembling hands, I reached for my phone but accidentally hit the emergency contact.

I expected no one to answer, just like always.

But just as I was about to hang up, Vivian Taylor's voice came through the phone, catching me off guard.

"Philip, you'll get sick if you take a cold shower. Let me help you."

I could hear Philip's muffled voice over the sound of running water in the background. "No. I'm afraid I'll hurt you and the baby."

Vivian paused for a moment, her voice carrying a taunting edge. "Then why don't you go find Janet?"

It was true that Philip hadn't kidnapped Shawn, but he'd had his people knock Shawn unconscious. It took me a moment to realize that he was just testing me, playing another sick game to see who I would choose. The moment Shawn woke up, he rushed straight over to me. His face was slick with sweat as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me to my feet. "Come on, let's go home."I nodded, not wanting to stay in that place for another second.Philip stood at the other end of the hallway, watching Shawn lead me away by the hand. He leaned against the wall, looking oddly lonely. As I passed him, he suddenly spoke. "Leave with him, and I'll end my life."My steps faltered."Or you could stay," he added. "We can go back to how things used to be."I turned to look at him, suddenly finding the whole situation so ridiculous that I almost laughed."Are you out of your mind, Philip? I already made my choice. You were the one who cheated. You were the one who betrayed me. What the hell are you try

Philip still went after Shawn. When the kidnapper called, I couldn't think straight. He gave me an address, told me to come alone, and hung up.I recognized the address. It was where Philip had been staying the past few days.I grabbed a gun and went straight there. The moment I pushed the door open, I fired twice. The bullets whizzed past Philip's ear and hit the wall behind him, sending plaster flying."Where is he?" I gritted my teeth. "Where's Shawn?"His bodyguards instantly rushed forward, forming a half-circle around me.Philip raised a hand, and they all backed off. He just stared at me without saying a word.Losing my patience, I lunged forward, grabbed him by the collar, and jammed the gun under his chin. "Where the hell is he?""Janet." He gave me a faint smile, his voice calm. "What if I told you it wasn't me?""Stop lying, Philip! I know you!" My hand shook, the gun trembling against his skin. "If you have a problem, come after me! Shawn and I are getting married

I never thought I'd see Philip again.By my third year in Feldora, I had a new boyfriend, Shawn Leed. Life was quiet and peaceful. Those ten years Philip and I spent tearing each other apart felt like a distant memory.I was buying water at a convenience store when I overheard that piranhas had been spotted in a nearby diving area. My hand shook so badly that I dropped the bottle, sending it rolling across the floor."No idea how they got into that area. It's usually perfectly safe," a man said."I heard one guy got hurt. Someone pushed him toward the piranhas while trying to get away. Poor guy got bitten up pretty badly."Panicking, I pushed through the crowd and ran toward the bay as fast as I could.A group of people had gathered along the beach. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. Then I saw Philip gripping Shawn's arm.I was stunned. My eyes fell on the horrific wound on Shawn's leg, and my mind went blank.I rushed over and slapped Philip hard acr

Philip never expected to spend a whole year abroad looking for me.For the first three months, he was furious.Every time his people called to say they still had no leads, he completely lost it, smashing nearly everything in his hotel room."Keep looking." He clenched a lit cigarette between his lips, his voice low and frightening. "She thinks she can just divorce me and walk away? Is she kidding me? Did she even ask if I agreed?"He refused to accept that I had really left, let alone that I could actually stop loving him.Over the years, I'd been intensely jealous, obsessively possessive, and almost completely dependent on him. He knew better than anyone that I couldn't live without him.By the third month, his rage faded, replaced by a deep, agonizing panic. His room was littered with empty cigarette packs. Whenever the panic became too much, he'd pick at the old scars on his arms until they were bleeding. Then one day, he suddenly realized how alike we were. Even when we pan

There were three documents. One was the paperwork for my abortion procedure, another was Vivian's fetal monitoring results, and the third was the divorce agreement. When Philip saw the first two, he just scoffed. This wasn't the first time I'd faked a pregnancy. After losing our first child years ago, my body had been badly damaged, and doctors had told me I'd likely never be able to have children again. Philip had long since given up hope of us having another child.Thinking this was just another one of my cheap mind games, Philip pulled out Vivian's report and threw it straight into the trash. Then he reached the divorce agreement, and his breath caught. He flipped through a few pages with a frown, his breathing growing heavier. He was irritated by what he assumed was yet another one of my reckless stunts. Beneath that irritation, though, an unfamiliar anger began to rise.No matter how ugly our fights had gotten over the years, I'd never once mentioned divorce. He'd never ev

During the week I was in the hospital, Philip stayed in the room next door, taking care of Vivian. One afternoon, I was lost in thought as muffled, intimate sounds drifted through the wall. Suddenly, Dr. Russell knocked on my door and walked in."Ms. Stewart, the test results are back. The baby Ms. Taylor is carrying isn't Mr. Mumford's."Instead of taking the report, I looked out the window without a flicker of emotion.Whatever happened with Philip was no longer my concern. On my way out of the hospital, I passed Vivian's room and saw Philip gently coaxing her to finish a bowl of soup.Honestly, this awkward yet sincere side of Philip was one I'd never seen before.I raised my hand to knock, then hesitated. In the end, I asked Dr. Russell to give him the divorce agreement. Then I headed straight to the airport and left the city without looking back.… Philip had been on edge throughout the week Vivian was in the hospital. He knew me too well. He knew how obsessive and pos
