Chapter 2

Autor: The Answer
"Think whatever you want." Evelyn didn't argue. She just stood up and walked away.

Daniel froze for a second. He had expected her to at least scold Noah. He really had gone too far with what he said.

Evelyn was halfway up the stairs when Zoe suddenly followed.

"Evelyn, it's been so long since we had some sister time. Let me keep you company," Zoe said sweetly.

As soon as she drew close, the smile on her face twisted, and her voice dropped to a harsh whisper. "You really are pathetic, Evelyn! You brought that report on purpose, didn't you? You thought you could steal Daniel and Noah away from me? Dream on! I'm not letting that happen!"

The next second, Zoe grabbed Evelyn's hand and raised her voice. "Evelyn, don't! I'm sorry! It's my fault!"

A heartbeat later, Zoe lurched backward, dragging Evelyn with her.

The two of them tumbled down the stairs. Evelyn's head cracked hard against one of the steps before her body hit the floor. Her skull rang, everything buzzing and spinning. Before she could even understand what had happened, she heard Daniel and Noah shouting in a panic.

"Zoe!"

"Aunt Zoe!"

Zoe curled up on the floor in tears. "Evelyn! I never meant to take Daniel and Noah from you! They just feel bad for me and want to take care of me while I still have time! Why did you push me down the stairs?"

"Evelyn! Have you lost your mind? Zoe is sick!" Daniel roared.

Noah saw the blood on Zoe's forehead and glared at Evelyn with pure hatred. "I don't have a murderer for a mom! I hate you! I hate you!"

Neither of them even glanced at the blood trickling down Evelyn's hairline.

Daniel rushed to scoop Zoe up, completely focused on her. Just before he left, Daniel seemed to remember something. "Noah, stay here and look after your mother."

"I don't want to!" Noah jumped back as if he'd been asked to touch something filthy. "She hurt Aunt Zoe! If she dies, she deserves it! Aunt Zoe is the only one who matters!"

Daniel and Noah didn't hesitate again. They rushed out with Zoe and disappeared.

Staring at the empty doorway, Evelyn's vision went from black to white and black again before finally cutting out.

When she opened her eyes again, she was still on the floor. Six full hours had passed. The smear of blood on the hardwood beside her had dried to a dark brown.

Neither Daniel nor Noah had come back once.

A small, humorless laugh slipped out of her. So, this was her good husband and son. They abandoned her without a second thought to hover over Zoe and her dramatized condition, not even bothering to check whether she was dead or alive.

Evelyn forced herself upright, every movement stiff and slow. On her way back up the stairs, her gaze caught on the wall calendar. She picked up a pen and drew a circle around the date 15 days away.

Just 15 more days, and she could finally be gone. She would leave Daniel and Noah for good.

...

When Daniel and Noah finally returned, three more days had passed. They had stayed at the hospital with Zoe, guarding her by her bedside over a minor injury as if she were made of glass.

Meanwhile, Evelyn, who had smashed her head on the stairs, was apparently not worth a second thought.

The first thing Noah did when he stepped back into the house was march up to Evelyn and accuse her, "Mom, why didn't you go see Aunt Zoe? She almost got a concussion because of you. You should go apologize."

Looking at Noah's tyrannical posture, Evelyn almost laughed.

"She got hurt, and I didn't?" she asked.

Noah faltered, as if it had only just occurred to him that Evelyn had fallen too. His hesitation lasted only a couple of seconds, though. Then, he lifted his chin, full of defiance and indignation.

"That's your own fault! If you weren't so jealous of Aunt Zoe, nothing would've happened."

Evelyn had known he would say something like that, but the words still stabbed into her chest like a knife. She held his gaze in silence.

Noah started to fidget and edged behind Daniel, suddenly unsure of himself.

Daniel frowned. "Why are you picking on a child?"

He stepped forward and reached toward Evelyn. "Let me see. Is it bad?"

Evelyn turned her head away, refusing his touch. She didn't need any of his fake concern.

Daniel's hand grasped at nothing. He froze, thrown off balance in more ways than one. Her rejection made something twist uncomfortably in his chest, and his brows knitted together as he spoke.

"Zoe is your sister. She has stomach cancer. She might not even have two months left. Why do you have to fight with her over everything? Do you really think someone who's about to die can still take anything from you? Evelyn, stop being so selfish!"

Selfish?

Evelyn almost laughed.

Wrong. They were all wrong.

She was the one with cancer. She was the one who was dying.

Daniel went to the hospital first. Noah's surgery had gone smoothly, but he still hadn't woken up."Noah might simply not want to wake up for now," the nurse said.Daniel clasped Noah's hand and set the burnt toy bear by his pillow. "Noah, this is my fault."He had led Noah astray. He had ruined both Noah and Evelyn."I'll bring your mom to you. If she's willing to see you," he whispered. Then, he stood up and headed for the police station. Right before he stepped inside, his palms were slick with sweat. He didn't know if Evelyn would be willing to return to him. He didn't know if she would even agree to see him.At this point, he had no right to ask for anything at all.If Evelyn chose to leave, he wouldn't try to stop her. Letting go was the only thing he could do for her. He forced himself to breathe and built up what little courage he had. Finally, he walked into the lobby, but a nervous tightness still seized his chest. It felt just like that winter long ago, when the f

Owen and Tiana were stunned into silence by the question.Zoe's gaze darted away, and she suddenly clutched her chest. "It hurts... Dad, Mom, hurry and take me to the hospital! My stomach is killing me again!""You wanna go to the hospital so they can expose your fake cancer?" Daniel asked.Tiana shot to her feet. "Daniel, you can say anything you want, but you can't joke about this! We all know Zoe has stomach cancer!"Zoe's voice shook as she choked up. "Daniel, are you losing it? Are you hearing things now? Why would I ever fake having cancer?"Daniel took out his phone and played the recording of Zoe's earlier call for everyone to hear. In it, she clearly admitted she was faking the cancer and had planned Evelyn's kidnapping.Owen and Tiana were completely shaken. Tiana almost passed out on the spot."What have we done..." she cried. She slapped her thigh and sobbed until she was almost out of breath, like she wanted to smash her head into the wall and end it all.The pain

Daniel rushed to the hospital the moment he got the call, only to be stopped outside the operating room."Mr. Hayes, please calm down!"Daniel's eyes were red and wet. A wave of guilt crashed through him. He had failed Evelyn again. He had failed to protect their child."How's Noah?" he asked. The nurse looked at the man in front of her. He was helpless, desperate, and trembling uncontrollably. He had once cut a sharp, polished figure. Now, he was skin and bone, with dark circles under his eyes and a lifeless pallor that erased any trace of the confident man he used to be.She sighed. "Noah's condition is very serious. He suffered a severe head injury. There's a chance he could end up in a vegetative state."Daniel's eyes went bloodshot. "Where were the aides? Where were the nurses? Why wasn't anyone watching him?""Mr. Hayes, Noah did have a family member with him at the time.""Who?""His aunt, Zoe Wynn."The nurse took a stuffed bear from the cart. "Also, this was thrown o

Daniel didn't give up searching for Evelyn. He dropped to his knees in front of a camera and recorded himself begging for her forgiveness. That video spread across the world. Some people online admired him for being so devoted. Some said he was just a scumbag putting on an act. Others cursed him outright. He didn't care about any of it. All he cared about was whether Evelyn would see it and whether she would forgive him.At night, whenever Daniel thought about how little time she had left, he would picture her curled up somewhere, writhing in pain from late-stage stomach cancer. The thought jolted him awake. And once he sat up in bed, he could no longer fall back asleep.Day by day, as each page was torn off the calendar, that nameless fear spread slowly through his chest until it felt like something was crushing him, leaving him short of breath.Zoe still came by every now and then. She kept insisting she had not known about Evelyn's cancer, but to Daniel, that no longer mattere

Zoe's face went completely pale. "Daniel, I don't understand what you're talking about."Tiana's eyes widened. "Cancer? Daniel, has Evelyn tricked you? She's perfectly healthy! How could she have cancer? Don't just believe anything because she's gone missing!""Exactly!" Owen said anxiously. "That ungrateful brat is just jealous of Zoe! How could they both get cancer? That's ridiculous!"Indeed, it was ridiculous. If he could choose, Daniel would have wanted nothing more than for it to be a lie. But it wasn't."This is Evelyn's medical report from the hospital." Daniel took out the freshly printed report.Owen and Tiana saw the words "late-stage stomach cancer" and went white as a sheet.Tiana's legs gave out, and she dropped to the floor. "No... That's impossible! How is that possible?"Zoe saw the proof in black and white and couldn't hide anymore. Her eyes instantly turned red. "How could this happen? I didn't know... I really didn't know...""You didn't know?" Daniel sudden
